Tom Selleck in conversation with George Pennacchio at discussing his memoir,
"You Never Know." This event was taped on May 28, 2024.
Frank, funny and open-hearted, You Never Know is an intimate memoir from one of the most beloved actors of our time. With never-told stories from all corners of his personal and professional life, Tom Selleck recounts his friendships with Frank Sinatra, Carol Burnett, Sam Elliott, James Garner and more.
Tom Selleck is an award-winning actor and producer best known for his iconic role as Thomas Magnum in the original Magnum P.I. television series. Among the many unforgettable roles he has played are PI Lance White on The Rockford Files, Peter Mitchell in Three Men and a Baby, Matthew Quigley in Quigley Down Under, and Peter Malloy in In & Out. He was beloved as Dr. Richard Burke, Monica’s older boyfriend, on Friends and is currently starring as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on the hit crime drama Blue Bloods, now in its 14th season.
In Tom Selleck’s new memoir, You Never Know, the star of Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods shares his backstory-from the University of Southern California business school and basketball court to his co-star turn with Mae West and his recurring role as Monica’s boyfriend on Friends.
Selleck clears up an armload of misconceptions and shares dozens of never-told stories from all corners of his personal and professional life. He also shares what it was like to emerge as a mega-star in his mid-thirties- and how he adjusted his career to protect his family’s privacy and normalcy.
With charm, talent, and self-deprecating humor, Selleck reveals himself as someone who reached incredible heights by always insisting on being himself. His journey offers a fresh perspective on a changing industry and a changing world.
George Pennacchio is the longtime entertainment reporter for ABC7 Eyewitness News. He’s also the host of all the “On The Red Carpet” specials broadcast on the ABC-owned stations around the country. During his career, George has won four Emmy Awards, several National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards and has been honored with The Luminary Award by the L.A. Press Club for his body of work. George is now in his 28th year at ABC7.

Thank you for a Great interview. Tom comes across as a truly decent human being, who is grateful for his career & is full of humility, unlike most actors in hollyweird these days, who seem to regard their audience with disdain, which has turned me off hollywood & mainstream film & tv.

My husband did the props for a pilot for a baseball movie that Tom was starring in. I'm not sure it was Mr. Baseball. My mom and I went to watch the filming. My mom ( probably about 70+ years old) really loved Tom, and when we were walking up to the set, we passed Tom, who was walking away from the set. Mom reached out and took Tom's hand and said, "Hi, I'm Bea," to which he said, "Hi, I'm Tom." She was so thrilled, and a few days later, he sent her an autographed baseball and picture. She was so happy, and I was so surprised because. Not many actors would be so gracious about being grabbed by a fan, but he was so gracious.

Absolutely enjoyed this interview, so funny, Thank you. been a huge fan of Tom Selleck for a very long time, he's a wonderful actor who never got a big head like some other famous celebrities, yes, he's good looking but what I admire the most is him being so humble n with such strong family values. Love watching his movies, he has such class and is a great role model for others. Love from Sydney Australia.

As a teen growing up watching magnum that show did instill a sence of morality and decency in sum of us who watched it... It's nice to see he's as decent in life as he portrayed in his characters...

Yes Tom , we want you to work!! Maybe another Jesse Stone show. We love you! My favorite part of Magnum was when you were stressed and you were answering someone, your voice would go up a couple of octaves, (planned comedy I’m sure) we just loved you being the boy next door.❤️😁

"Larry knew Frank." So I heard. At a nice restaurant on Maui. It had a small patio for smoking. My then-husband wanted a cigar after dinner, so out we went. Larry was out there alone, smoking a cigar. He tossed it into the bushes in a panic, like he'd offend someone (or get in trouble?). Then my ex pulled out his own cigar & Larry dove headfirst into the bushes to fish out his cigar. LOL We 3 sat & talked & drank. Larry spoke loads of his friendship with Frank; pointed to a gold bracelet he said he got from Frank. I asked to see it closer & he took it off. I put it on myself & thanked him, like I was keeping it. He was clearly distressed. My ex was about the same size as Selleck. I was amused by the tension, maybe a bit too much. Of course I gave it back. Haven't thought of that in ages.

It’s a formal interview q&a event. People from their generation dressed up a lot more often than people now do.

@@Jape9823 I'm of that same generation -but we didn't dress like conservative bankers! He's an actor - no reason to be dressed so conservative and devoid of any style.

Seems like you kind of lose your credibility when you sell products of questionable value to senior citizens.
