Soooooo, shortly after I made this video a viewer said I got that part wrong. I thought I had it figured out when I researched the tax code on the IRS's website, but the truth of the matter is, I understand motorcycles more than I do taxes. This is evident in the fact that I outright own both my motorcycles, and currently owe the IRS a pretty penny--LOL! The bottom line is, a purchaser will get some sort of tax benefit from purchasing an electric motorcycle...but that should definitely not a deciding factor, only kind of a like a Gee-Wizz bonus of buying some new tech. It resembles my first ride experience on an Energica. I'm now thinking of going to LW1. That bike always fascinated me since it was the HD Livewire. Did a test ride and love it. So modern, like 2035 future modern, compared to a fossil HD can be, wow. A nice balanced review 👍

You mispoke about the tax credit. What you described is a "deduction". A credit is a *credit*. It actually reduces your *total tax* that you would have to pay or would increase your refund by an equal amount should you have already needed to owe at least that many taxes in the first place.

I ride a H-D Ultra. My son-in-law bought a Zero that I rode around SoCal. Then I tested a LiveWire at my local dealer. What a fun ride! I took me about 3 minutes to learn the re-gen braking. Due to age, health and riding requirements now, I am seriousely considering trading my touring bike for a LiveWire. Of concern is no level-2 charging; lack of luggage rack. Ben Marshall produce several good videos on getting the most out of LiveWire.

I remember when EV cars started to become popular, it took a while for me to understand the concept, but now that I do, it makes a lot of sense. @@brankog7 the difference is in riding position/comfort and range. The LiveWire has more range and can use Level 3 charging. My son in law rode both and settled on the Zero because it fit him better.

I own a 2022 Zero SR/S. I work 50 miles from. At 65 mph I can get to work and back on a single charge, and have about 20% battery left. I can get about 130-150 miles range if I’m driving on the 20 / 210 or 60 freeway in SoCal. It supports level 1 & 2 charging. Level 1 chargers from 13% to fully charge, yaks about 8 hours. Level 2 charging, about 3 1/2 hours. I did buy it due to the cost of fuel. I was spending about $600 in full with my other bike (2014 Yamaha Stryker) the price was 23K. With the payment, I’m still saving $200 a month. My electric bill increased about 45 a month. So over all monthly savings is about $160. Insurance was interesting. Had to insure it for the value, since my insurance company doesn’t have a plan for electric. All and all, I’m happy with it. Due to the free downloadable upgrades, I got 10% extended range (110% battery vs 100%), 10% faster charging and reverse which they call Parking Mode (super handy). The two main reasons why I didn’t choose the Livewire, range and Harley hasn’t had the best rep in a while. All my buddies own Harley’s and they’ve all had major issues, even the newer bikes. The quality went down, and was afraid of their rep mixed with being new to electric. So I chose a company which has been in the electric game for a cool minute and worked out the bugs. I’m still interested in the Livewire. I’m not a fan of the riding position of the Zero nor their hard seat (my butt still hurts after 15 months of riding it.) I do like the level 3 charging ability of the Livewire, but I didn’t buy the Zero for fun, just a replacement for a commuter bike. For long rides, I have my Stryker (which has the most comfortable riding position and seat I’ve sat on yet).

Hi Doug! That's pretty impressive that you're coming out ahead each month $160 bucks. That's not chump-change by any means. My local Triumph dealer is also a Zero dealer and I'm tempted to test ride one. They do look cool and it's good to hear you talk about their range. It does lean more towards the sportier type of position. I thought it was quite comfortable because it was similar to how I have my Bonneville set up. But even sometimes I wonder if I should but my stock Bonneville bars back on-Ha! Thanks for watching! :)

Sweet! I dig these test drive videos. Are you at all concerned with how quiet they are? As a regular motorist, it’s one concern I have as they can be hard to see already. Anyways, just something I’ve wondered from someone who actually rides them.

Thanks! The LiveWire is really quiet, but when riding, you should always do it as if nobody sees you whether you have a loud exhaust or no exhaust at all. Many gas powered motorcycles come with pretty quiet exhausts so I don't think it's an issue as long as you're riding defensively. Thanks again, dude!

I definitely recommend taking a test ride. You’ve got nothing to loose and it’s a blast. I hear ya on the bags. I hate wearing a backpack while riding. I’m not sure what sort of accessories are available for the ONE but I imagine companies will start making stuff soon.

I think the lack of a clutch and shifting may be inviting to some who are unsure about manual transmissions. It might make motorcycling easier for some to get into. I found it odd for my left hand and foot to only be along for the ride. Haha! Thanks for watching!

Do you need a normal motorcycle license for one? Can you use one to get your license?

That is right. The same motorcycle license that allows you to legally operate a gasoline engine motorcycle is needed for the LiveWire ONE. I think the best way to get your license is to sign up for a Basic Riders Course--complete it, and then take the paperwork to the DMV to get the motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license. Many states will let you do that in place of their own test. The course is fun too! Thanks for watching!

I do think that's true, to a point. With how well insulated modern cars are, plenty of drivers listening to loud music, and the fact that many gas motorcycle stock exhausts are very quiet, I like to ride as if nobody can see or hear me. My Triumph Bonneville (with the stock exhaust) sounds like a sewing machine! :) Thanks for watching!

No level 2 charging was a big mistake. Level 3 is really hard on the battery pack. Should only be used for long trips. Not everyday charging.

What is unusual about it staying in 1st gear at a red light, DCT does the same thing. Bikers on manuals have always done this for safety. I may consider it's when it's half the price, weighs less than 440 lbs, it can go 300 miles without a charge and be fully charged in five minutes.

Range is abysmal. Only 70 miles highway is ridiculous. If you add bags the range would plummet further. The push for electric is expensive and the consumer has to make too many compromises.

I'd agree, this is probably not the bike for long highway rides. However, I do believe the technology will keep getting better and better to where electric motorcycles will be comparable to the range and "refueling/charging" speed of modern gas motorcycles. Thanks for watching!

Right now price and range are not there however they have to start somewhere. If they don't there is no technology to expand upon. My guess us in the next 5 years EV bikes will weigh less with smaller betters and plenty of range. I'm excited to see what the future brings for EV bikes but there is nothing like being on a roaring liter bike.

@Blacktop Roaming For sure. Look how far TV's have come. We started with massive heavy boxes that were expensive and now we can get 70" screens on the walls that weigh less than 30lbs but had the TV not started somewhere we wouldn't have what we have today.

Great video, great bike but with a few flaws. Electric is the future of motorcycling without a doubt. Not because they will be better, but out of necessity. Where I live, by 2035 all new vehicles will be required to be electric. So if I want a brand new bike in 2035 it will have to be electric. This is the future we are headed for and more big name brands like Harley Davidson need to start releasing electric motorcycles soon

4:25 Bros, this is why i cant stand motorcycles in general. Because 99% of them are made for people 5feet 7inches to 5feet 10inches. If your 5'7" to 5'10" you will fit on 99% of motorcycles perfectly. Dudes like me who are not even extremely tall, but dudes like me who are 5feet 11inches are to tall for all these bikes. I dont get it, its been the biggest problem with motorcycles for the past 15 years. Is now they make bikes to fit those 4inch window of people who are 5'7" to 5'10" perfectly and anyone taller looks ridiculous on the bike. Harley Davidson's biggest cruisers are rhe onlly bikes that dont look small on dudes my height and taller. But i dont like crusisrrs. So we stuck never being able to buy a motorcycle. But you shorter people are truly the luckiest people on earth, because you guys can buy and get any motorcycle and it fits you perfectly and you look cool on the motorcycle because it doesn't look small on you. Anyways, even these new electric bikes like this live wire and all the rest are to small. The only electric bike i seen that is made right for my height is the Damon motorcycle i think its called. Look at it and u see what i mean. Its big like i wish all them would be built

I'm one of those 5'9" guys...one thing is when I buy pants, my size is usually sold out because most guys are after the same size-LOL! How do you feel about adventure bikes? Those definitely sit higher and probably would suit your dimensions well. Think about this, Zack Courts, from Revzilla is over 6' and rode a Honda Navi for one of their videos. So when it comes down to it I'd recommend focusing on finding a bike that "feels" right to you and not worry about what it looks like. :) Thanks for watching!

@@blacktoproaming Yeah, adventure bikes are big enough and fit dudes my height, i left them out because i just hate the looks of them. I only want sporty bikes, naked street or full fairing sport. The solution is actually simple, all they have to do is make 2 sizes, the normal standard size of course which is made for those shorter riders and them make a larger size for taller riders. But they will never do it. I guess costs are the problem and just not wanting to think outside the box. But its common sense, top of the line bicycles like the ones the use in the tour de France, they make like 8 different size frames for the bike. The parts are the same, but the FRAME is bigger or taller. Thats all they have to do for motorcycles. But they dont have to make 8 sizes. just one size above the standard. They can easily use there computers to input lets say 1 to 2 inches bigger frame overall , and then the computer give them the frame. it would end up being 1 or 2 inches taller and longer, maybe wider. But i would tell the engineers to inout 2inches bigger frame overall. And it would be perfect for us taller riders. Simple. But like i said, i been telling compnaies on social media this for 15 years, nobody is brave enough to do this and be the first. Bottomline is i will die before someone with any brains sees the benefits of this. Its a win win for them and the customers. But since it will never happen, im stuck like all the rest of us taller riders who will just drive cars. We have the money, but we not buying small motorcycles so we look like a giraffe on a little kids tricycle. And to end this comment, like i said, u dudes 5feet 7inches thru 5feet 10inches better know how lucky you are. Because its like the motorcycle gods made motorcycles just for you guys first and foremost. 🤣✌️

I'm only 5'8", with 30" inseam. In the sixties, I could enjoy all the dirt bikes and my BMW 750. Now, a 1200 RT was a little too tall when I tried one ten years ago. A lot of bikes require 34" inseam! My 1999 Goldwing challenges me, I use experience, but my Harley Dyna fits my legs better, but the mids feel short. I guess we have to find what fits and compromise if needed. Good luck. At least bicycles come in different frame sizes.

For the head of Harley Davidson to come out and say that soon they will only offer electric bikes is going to be the beginning of the end for Harley Davidson. They are going to alienate their already existing fan base. Bud light

If it had a NACS socket, I might consider buying one, but if it's a crappy J1772 forget it. That garbage will be obsolete soon and good riddance. If manufacturers do not adopt NACS in America they aren't worth a shyt and are designed to fail. They opted out of the best, most reliable, and most available charging infrastructure in the nation. That will be their downfall.

@blacktoproaming if it is not NACS, it can not use teslas super charging network. The adapters offered by lectron and other vendors that go from NACS to J1772 only support level 2.

I’m sorry for crashing on your video with my observations. I tried hard to switch to Evs but… The safety of the rider is compromised as the current combustion engine’s sound is kind of high visibility warning to other drivers and pedestrians. I’ll carry on choosing the combustion engines over the electric. Not to mention the risk of lithium batteries over heating in phones and laptops. What if overheats on bikes ? It has already happened on a Mercedes Benz courtesy E car that, while parked on a driveway close to a house garage door, it burned the house as it got on fire spontaneously.

I think electric motorcycles would be fun around town but I don't like the idea of having an electric motorcycle and trying to do a 300 mile all day ride through mountains where even gas stations are scarce. If it runs out of power a passer-by couldn't bring you a gas can to at least get you off the mountain. I do long rides and touring and the other issue is I don't want to sit for 30-60 minutes waiting for a charge that might get me 90 more miles when I can fill my low rider st's 5 gallon tank in less than 5 minutes and then get 200 plus more miles. For running around a city they might be fine but I don't see electric ever being a good option for guys who really get out and tour.
