Steve Perkins Hey I have a few questions about the Guam and is it very expensive cost of the living ? I am interested in the Deaf ministry there if they provide a different religions like the United Pentecostal churches? And how about the Deaf population is in the only Guam ? Thanks

The company I was working for, sent me on a 2 week assignment in June of 1997. The first thing I noticed of course was the heat and humidity. Once I got used to is, it turned out to be a wonderful trip. Toured much of the island. Saw some great historical sites. Met Jeff from Jeff's Pirate Cove by accident and got a free lunch for helping him bring up the festival catamarran into the storage shed. It rained like crazy for about 5 minutes and then cleared up. It was alot of fun. Had a great experience.

Wow - I was stationed on Guam from 1971/1972 @ NCS - the place has REALLY changed. When I was there, there was only ONE radio/TV station (KUAM out of Agana) that both went off the air at midnight. There was ONE Mac Donalds serving the entire island, and 2 new car/truck dealerships - Atkins Kroll Chevrolet and "Sablan" Motors. Rained all the time. Hot, too. But, I thinbk Guam has got to be one of the most beautiful places on earth - sometimes prettier than Hawaii.

One of the best vid's of The Island I've seen!.Was stationed at NAVSTA '79-'81 and could have stayed forever...It looks like going south on Marine Drive as I recognized the Ben Franklin store and was trying to recognize anything else, but couldn't be sure.A lot of the old places from back then are probably remodeled by now and under different names like The Stardust Club,Madame Tokyo,Korean Village, and Club Yobo. Thanks again!.

I lived on Guam from 1967 to 1970. Back then the roads were made from coral reef and were slippery when they got wet. On most roads, you wouldn't want to drive any faster than 25 MPH, but on the main street running through Agana, you could get up to 35 MPH. It was weird coming back to California with the cars speeding along the freeways at 70 MPH. Everything seemed so fast after living the slow and easy life on Guam. When I lived off base, the houses looked kind of ratty. I think they were probably still recovering financially from Typhoon Karen in 1962. Lots of people lived in Quonset huts. The place I lived in at Barrigada was made of WWII box crates and was the best in the neighborhood. As horrible as the housing was and as bad as the schools could be, it looks like a lot of the charm has been lost with all the development. Maybe people are living better, but i miss seeing the places I remember. Looks like they are gone for good.

WOW! I was stationed there 41 years ago, and NONE of this existed! The only major road was caLLed "Route 3." The roads would get rain slick and they'd vecome slick as snot. They had ONE Mc Donalds on the island that had just opened up in Tamuning. One car dealer (Atkins Kroll Chevrolet, also in Tamuning) and ONE radio/TV station that went off the air at 11 pm. It was KUAM, Agana. I'd love to go back and see it again and how much it has changed.

I remember the locals used to chew on these nuts .. Can't remember what they're called -- but prolonged use would stain your teeth red. Wait; someone just told me they're called "Betel Nuts." I remember the people were super nice, and the women were pretty, until they hit 40 and then exploded, and wore "Mumu's." I remember being invited to the Guam equivelant of a Luau, and they'd cook a whole pig/boar in the ground under pine leaves. Delicious. Like I said, the locals were so warm and friendly.

Living in Guam had it's ups and downs. I really hated the public schools there. disrespectful students, constant fights everyday, people smoking (and this was in middle school) thank god I moved to the States before 7th grade, many rude people. The constant fear if a Typhoon will hit or not. The very dimly lit streets. Although I do miss the food, mmm still think of all the top notch cuisine I use to eat. The beaches were nice especially the white sandy beaches, the hotels. Would love to visit.

I'm from Guam, &I'm sorry, but there are no starbucks. However, there are other great coffee places I love going to, such as Coffee Beanery &Java Junction. I believe the legal age to start working is 16. Going on base is just the same as any other base. The beach is awesome, the water's warm. Use lots of sunscreen if you burn easy. &yes, Guam is civilized, internet works fine. However, cellular service is another story. I hope this helps &that you'll love Guam as much as I do.
