Some years ago I was vacationing in the DR and I'll never forget the moment a Dominican said to me "Dominicans work to live, and Americans live to work." It had a really profound affect on me and my thinking. While I don't expect to ever permanently move away from the US, starting this November I will start spending more time each year outside of the US.

I feel and agree with everything you say, James. However, there is a flip side to an American living abroad in other countries. And that's the dependence on the use of the US dollar. No one seems to talk about this aspect of the equation. If an American was not receiving money from the US to convert to Dominican pesos, do you think they would still have the same outlook on living in the Dominican Republic or anywhere abroad for that matter? Because let's be honest, it's the US dollar that's making it possible to take advantage of the cheaper cost of living in the DR and other countries.
@dumbphonemom

Absolutely. Many people want to live on $1,500 a month in the DR and still find it expensive, but they wouldn’t survive in the US with that same amount.

Valid point. But the US $ is not going anywhere; at least not for now. Use the dollar to strengthen your situation here. The banks here have some investment opportunities. Build up your money there and you might find you can live with very little US$. There are other things too.

@@Dee-pj7hh I agree with you brother when you say, use the dollar to strengthen your position wherever you're living by taking advantage of investment opportunities. But let's be honest, a lot of people, do not possess the mindset to do that, because they don't teach that in these public fool aka (school) systems. People need to keep in mind, that the entire US monetary system, is a house of cards. Nothing of intrinsic value is backing the US dollar other than the faith/belief that people put into it. The US dollar is fiat money, so therefore at any given moment, the US monetary system can come crumbling down.

I'm an American who plans to move to Puerto Plata this year. I want to start a business of restaurants in Puerto Plata and Santiago. I love the Dominican Republic's culture and don't want to "Americanize" it at all, other than the menu that my restaurants will offer and the wages that i plan to pay. I want my employees to feel that they are paid better and treated better with my company than they would be by any other company.

Hey brother it's the same in Ghana in west Africa when it comes to quarls and disputes. They get very heated and emotional but people around and most of the time complete strangers step in and separate and talk sense into both parties and before you know it things are back to normal. In Ghana they have a saying. "No fight ." One of the things I love about the country. Happy to know that the same culture exists in the D.R.

Norberis , you both are welcome to visit us here on the island of Key Largo, Florida! We’re only 1 hour more or less from Miami with lots of shopping! I once lived in Playa Cofresi, Puerto Plata, DR. We moved back to the Florida Keys from the DR and now we take lots of trips from Miami to the DR and truly enjoy the DR to visit family and friends! The Florida Keys has beaches and beautiful neighborhoods without any hustle or bustle. When people say they are going to do something here on this island, they mean it! That’s why we left DR because it was a predatory situation about the financial situation. We’ve got Cuban restaurants and Thai places, and lots of places that you can grab something quick, and it’s not fast food! You’re both welcome to come and stay with us and Vlog your travels from the 43 islands that make up the Florida Keys! We have so many friends that have moved here with us and we are all tight knit like family! Hit us up around the end of the year or so.. We have a huge family home on the bay side of the island, we’d love to host you both! We speak Spanish and English here in our home. 🎉 Stay strong and safe.. Blessings from our family to you both! 🙏🏼🙏🏼👍🏼

Man you said it. That hampster treadmill is a REALITY for far too many of us. The daily routine is monotonous and you ask yourself and I really living or simply existing? My second retirement will happen in November and I will definitely be moving to Punta Cana. My wife is Dominican and as expected she misses being there. The Green Card process is terrible, so we are delayed even in her being able to visit home. The financial difference is going to be very substantial for us, so freedom is on the way.

Most people with the ability or possibility to move from one place to another without too much hassle get tired of living in the same place after 3 years. However, with changing furniture or adding new things to the house or apartment people can extend living in one dwelling for more than 10 years. But even in the USA people get tired of living in the same home beyond 10 years. Having money and/or the possibility to do so makes all the difference when making that decision.

Thanks for that. I think a key factor is that you guys are in Santo Domingo instead of the many rural areas. I.m from NY and I love visiting tropical places including Fl and DR. I also have family in DR, but what I find difficult is feeling there isn't enough to do unless you happen to be in the Capital. You could be financially good, but if there's not enough to do, it gets old quick. I am used to being able to be 15 minutes to 30 minutes from anywhere without blinking an eye. Museum, park, cafes, shopping, etc. When you are in a resort, that is not real life. I think trasitioning from Fl might be easier than a big city. You could live like a king in many DR locals with US money. I really like your apt and the other places you have shown around el malecon. Thanks again

Nice video. I find it interesting that when Americans decide to leave to a whole different country because they are tired of the stress from working hard, it tends to be people from the cities. Most people want to live in the big cities but realize how hard it can be to build a home, raise a family, and still have money to vacation. You can get out the cities in the US and have a slower life. Maybe that's not the case here but Fort Lauderdale is a big city, and it makes sense that you would want to leave.

Understand this is the way locals do things. Do not compare the DR y the US. Don’t try to be a savior. Let things fall into place, you will eventually get into your routine and find your space. But Dominicans are American but birth as well because Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 is located in the America continent. The DR is the oldest country of the Americas and was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his first trip in 1492. The capital city, Santo Domingo, is the site of the first Catholic cathedral, first university, and first hospital. From the financial perspective I do agree with you guys, however, Dominican Republic is still facing great challenges that are contrasting to most Americans willing to permanently move there, corruption being the main one. Driving on DR's autopistas resembles driving in Mexico City where local traffic cops stop you for the "mordidas". First, we are not used to be getting stopped on the streets for no reason, much less by traffic cops with intentions of intimidation and extortion. This happens to us every time we drive from Punta Cana to Casa De Campo. They position themselves right on the hottest tourist travel areas looking for some poor pariguayo they can extort from. Its a shame; such a beautiful country and a few bad apples killing their main source of income.

I normally drive with the Waze app, and a couple of months ago I slowed down to 80km/hr to test them out and still got pulled over with the excuse that there were checking to see if I had my belt fastened. I guess locals don't mind, but it pisses the heck out of tourists.

At this point we don't know that the money will not be invested in those sectors. Jay said he felt "suffocated" in the United States and I felt the exact same way! I don't miss much from the United States other than family and friends. In reference to fast food, I am not sure about Santo Domingo but almost everywhere I have been throughout the country there are food trucks that offer "comida chatarra."

Wow I have a painting very similar of the broken beach fence. But mine in not blue it is more tan. I really like that image it reminds me of my youth at Jones Beach those sticks became swords for dueling, LOL. I like the beach but as a city boy I have to have a city close by. Puerto Plata does not work for me Santo Domingo does. But I cannot stay in DR more than 6 months than I miss NYC, and NY state. 🤷‍♂ I get burnt out, I loose the DR "Glow" and its time to go home. UBER up and running now much better in La Capital makes me stay in the city more. All that walking in the heat can be brutal.

@@NorberisRI went to Barahona last year. The beach was too violent for swimming, not one person in the water, and the locals warned me not to enter. There are several water holes , they're cool but far from neat and polished and are heavily populated with locals and visitors with their families and very loud music. I'm cool with it, but I'm sure that not everyone is.
