Santo Domingo is a combination of New York, Miami and a bit of New Orleans thrown in (using Zona Colonial in this respect) When I first came to the DR, I was apprehensive about visiting the city, but now, no trip is complete without SD.

Good point Jay, you said a person could get to know the lay of the land of Puerto Plata and other locations in the Dominican Republic in a day or two. I live in Puerto Plata and travel to Santo Domingo frequently and I can say there is NO WAY you can learn Santo Domingo in a day or two from Villa Meja to Gazcue just raveling alone would take more than two days not to mention stopping at various sites to familiarize yourself along the way would take many trips. The other challenge is it is so easy to get stuck in your favorite part of the city like Bella Vista and neglect Piantini right down the street. For your Santo Domingo is #1 for me it's #2...LOL!

@@JayAbroad Yeah, in Piantini at the Holiday Inn there. Gotta hit Blue Mall sir. I've heard good things. Thanks for the intel btw. Ima try to check out a few places you mentioned like Norte and possibly Este. Trying to avoid touristy areas and gringo prices
@JayAbroad8 ай бұрын
Ok, that's a good location. Was just at that Holiday inn for a conference. Blue Mall is nice but Agora Mall is better and it's right down the street from the Holoday Inn. Blue Mall is cool, lot of expensive stores very upscale. Are you planning to go with someone to Norte and Este?
@ryanjohnson34148 ай бұрын
@@JayAbroad I learned long ago to heed advice from someone who knows more so Agora it is. Thanks. But yeah, my uncle will he traveling with me. He has zero spanish while mine is borderline conversational. That said we'll likely keep it tight by homebasing in Piantini, then hitting Norte/Cristo Rey for the immersion. Depending on feel, we might head out toward Este and Boca Chica if time/traffic allows. Didn't realize how sprawling this city actually is.

Hey Jay really enjoy your channel man! I gotta quick question for you. Im 23 and will be traveling solo in a few weeks to make my 2nd trip to the DR. My first stop is Sosua but Im thinking about checking out Santo Domingo after since I've heard so many good things about it. Do you think Santo Dominigo would be safe for a dude my age to be walking around solo? I plan on staying in downtown Zona colonial area and not venturing out of that.
@DCampusano19 ай бұрын
Sosua is trash man, go to Caberete instead (the next town over). And if you're going to Santo Domingo, def stay in Zona Colonial if you're traveling solo, don't recommend venturing out.
@TLOPassportBro9 ай бұрын
@@DCampusano1 for cabarete though I thought they don’t allow girls to come over? When I was looking at air bnbs for cabarete they seemed very family oriented and didn’t allow any chicas working girls to come over

@TLOPassportBro I personally think it's safe to walk around in certain areas. Zona Colonial, Gazcue, along the Malecon, Piantini, Naco, Bella Vista are all areas that are cool to walk for first time travelers. As I mentioned in this video it's a big city and can be overwhelming for people who don't understand it. I know many guys come here alone and have no issues.

Jay great video, do you recommend to rent a car or use public transportation?

It just depends on what your itinerary will look like while you're here. Also, if you are ok driving here. Uber is really in expensive here too.

Am I correct in saying that Santo Domingo Este is a little, calmer than Districo Nacional?
@JayAbroad9 ай бұрын
I think that's a fair assessment.
@Andrew-hk4dh7 ай бұрын
Actually, the capital of the country is only the national district, the rest are municipios of the santo domingo province (not santo domingo the city, that is the national district, but the province).they even have their own government, and capital of the santo domingo province is santo domingo este city. DR capital = santo domingo de Guzmán in the national district area Santo Domingo province capital= santo domingo este

What is your favorite Cigar store/ lounge? I have visited a few and the selection hasn't always been very large. You seem like a cigar connoisseur so I'm curious your opinion or if you plan on a video covering soon.
@JayAbroad8 ай бұрын
I like Arturo Fuentes in terms of cigar lounge and I also like Arturo Fuentes cigars. But Cigar Cabinet has the best Cigar selection so far that I've seen here in Santo Domingo. I'm an amateur when it comes to cigars but I enjoy smoking them. I will do plan on doing a video on cigars.

Agree with you 99%. I'd switch oeste and Norte though 😅 because I know a person in oeste and never hungout in Norte. I have plenty of friends in este, in the San Isidro area. I just wish they would extend the metro to the airport. It would make travel much easier to Districto Nacional. Also, it would prevent people from getting scammed by the Uber drivers on the late flights that come in.
@JayAbroad9 ай бұрын
Lol...I feel ya! I agree about the airport that would be nice if they extended out there.

That's already in the plans for development. There will be a metro line connecting the airport to the center of city prob in the next 5 yrs..

I've been wanting to hit up Santo Domingo for a while. I'm thinking about a week long trip. I kind of want to hit that infamous town on the north coast for a few days then head back to Santo Domingo. What do you think about a tourist renting a car and driving around the island?
@JayAbroad8 ай бұрын
To me it's perfectly safe to drive here on the island. I just don't recommend driving at night from city to city. Other than that the road from Santo Domingo to Sosua is fine
