I know some vets in my area offer wellness plans! I pay $25 a month but that covers two years checkups, parasite prevention, stool tests, and all the vaccines and the microchip (also spay/neuter if they aren’t fixed already)

The price for the vet bill seems pretty normal. For my dog on average it’s 300 plus dolors. Although it looks like you did more for your dog since it’s a puppy. My dog is 4 years old and does not have to do as many shots now so it’s a bit cheaper. Although it’s still expensive.

It’s a little high, but I think it’s because New York prices are a bit higher on average. It must be to cover the sky high rents. I worked as a vet receptionist in Philly. Vaccines where I am are $30-$40 and the exam fees about $50.

You can buy simparica at Chewy’s at slightly discounted price, they will directly request prescriptions from your vet so it’s really convenient. Simprica has different tablets based on dog sizes, so agree with another comment that you shouldn’t be paying $70+. Consultation fee seems reasonable considering you are in NY. In Texas I pay around $65 for consultation fee for my 70lbs dog, and around $30-50 per vaccine depending on the type.

I dont recommend buying any medicines through online pharmacy. The outer box may look the same. But these medicine companies do not deal with online companies. They only deal with vets. Therefore, there is big chance you are getting a medicine that does not contain same ingredients. These medicine companies will not grantees their products if it has bought from online.

Anabelle Mariano think I remember Meesh took it out of the plastic pot and put it into the decorative pot. Tbh it’s better to keep it in the original plastic pot and find a slightly larger decorative pot because at least then it can partially drain and there’s air flow 🤷‍♀️

The plant when you were just tugging at the leaves and they were just coming out, the Chinese money plant. they don´t like being over watered or direct sunlight and from my experience are very picky when you first get them. I have one and the leaves would always die off. Recently, I re-potted it and it´s thriving and looks very healthy and happy. I keep it in front in front of a window where it maybe gets direct sunlight for a couple hours of the day, other than that its indirect light, and I only water it if the soil seems very dry or if the leaves are droopy (then it´s telling you I need water!) oh! and Happy Birthday!!!!!!

Agree with this! A trick I was told was to use a wood skewer to check that the soil is dry before watering enough to have soil run through the pot, but not enough for it to sit stagnant at the bottom. If they're losing leaves, some plant food might help them regrow.
@aiueda6579
@aiueda6579 4 жыл бұрын
The pilea is also planted too deep in the soil and some of the stems are under the soil so it'll be more prone to stem rot.

I can't tell if this is true about the plant's specific pot, but if the pot the plant is in doesnt have draining holes in the bottom, this makes the root rot even worse because all the water is at the bottom! so if the pot doesn't have draining holes, put it in one that does :)
@julieeggers9541
@julieeggers9541 4 жыл бұрын
I guess the best way would just be to google each single one of your plants (the name is usually on the side of the pot if it came with the plant) and find out what kind of conditions they like. The trick is to not just put them where you think they'll look nice but somewhere where they like the conditions

I don’t think the pot with the Chinese money plant in it has drainage holes, so I think the plant has sat in moisture for too long and the roots have maybe started to rot a little. It’s a good idea to let it dry out until the bottom soil is also dry (you can test with the moisture meter). Then water carefully and not too much: the water can’t escape the pot so you have to make sure you don’t water too much or too often. I always let my money plant dry out between watering and it’s loving that!

your pilea plant looks like it got root rot! that happens from overwatering. the moisture meter is helpful if you already know what the ideal soil moisture is for your plants. for example, pothos and philedendron need the soil to dry out a bit before rewatering, whereas my fern absolutely guzzles water. figure out what kind of moisture levels you plants need and THEN the moisture meter will be helpful!!

The reason why your pilea peperomioides leaves are falling out is because you are overwatering it. I recommend putting all of your plants in a nursering pot/ pot with drainage so the excess water can run out at the bottom so it doesn't get root rot. Good luck with your plants Michelle! :)

I used to work at a clinic and $95 for a vet consultation is way to expensive, my clinic charged $42 for a sick visit and $21 for a check up. I don't remember completely about how much a cytology was but I think paying around $100 for both the cytology and medication is reasonable. $500 for the whole visit is definitely a rip off, I've seen invoices like that more for extreme visits like a blocked cat or dog fight that needs sutures. I'm assuming the prices are so high because of the area you live, I would personally take a further drive for a cheaper clinic and only use the ones close by incase of an emergency.

the one at 5:09 is called a zz plant and they thrive on neglect! you only need to water them once every month! and the one at 5:30 where the leaves were falling out, i believe it got root rot from the roots staying in water for too long. It doesnt need to be watered a lot and they like to have good soil drainage.

Looks like your Pilea peperomioides (Chinese Money Plant) might have root rot. It's been overwatered and not allowed to dry out in between waterings. Best thing to do now would be to take it out of its pot and check its roots and get rid of any rotted/soggy roots and only keep the healthy roots and repot it.

Hi Michelle! Usually people kill their plants by overwatering them, and by the way your plant looks, that could be the problem. So don’t water them that much, you can tell when to water them by putting your finger in the soil, approximately 3cm deep, if the soil is wet or humid it’s ok. If it’s dry you can water it. This doesn’t apply for the cactus though. Well, hope it helps! Love your videos!

I take care of my plants too and I had the same problems but I suggest you use rice water (the hot water you rinse the rice with) and it really works and the water should be warm. Happy birthday, I wish you a remarkable year ❤

I would say the vet bills are pretty normal especially since there were a few extras with all the shots and ear examination - I just went through the same thing with my puppy... but once they get the shots done, it should only be a yearly thing with fewer extras hopefully! Also regarding your plant, it's possible there isn't enough drainage at the bottom since that seems to be a small pot, you could either try to repot in something with holes in the bottom or add rocks at the bottom so the water has somewhere to go and it would avoid the roots rotting which I think may have happened? Snake plants are super easy to take care of and can get pretty big so I would recommend one of those! Great indoor plants that supposedly clean indoor air :) also golden pothos plants. Those are the only ones I currently have since all my others have died off haha

the vet bill was definitely overpriced. for reference, my vet fee is usually $40. and i pay $65 for simparica for my $90lb dog. Dobby is much smaller so his should be less. also worth noting that these may just be NYC prices. i live in the south.

the pilea was definitely overwatered. the pilea, zz, monstera, and pepperomia need to dry out before being watered, or it leads to root rot. if you had a circulating fan in the apartment, would be good to keep it on for a few hours a day to help with air circulation. The cactus cannot be watered often, wait till you see wrinkles on the body and then water it thoroughly, before leaving it to dry out very very completely again!

The vet bill sounds right. Since most of the time pet owners pay out-of-pocket for vet visits, the costs seem really high when you compare this to a doctor visit where you pay a copay if you have health insurance. Vet clinics use a lot of the same equipment and medication and human clinics (x-ray, anesthesia machines, etc) so the costs are covering their wages, rent, supplies, and all the expenses pertaining to running a vet clinic. In addition, costs may be higher in nyc since the cost of living and rent is higher than other places in the states. To help with the high vet bills, pet insurance and Care Credit help turn a rather high vet bill into a more manageable monthly expense. It is best to get pet insurance as soon as possible because many plans don't cover pre-existing conditions that pets may develop as they age. For example, if your pet gets injured by a car and you don't have pet insurance yet, the insurance you purchase after the incident wouldn't cover the costs for the incident.

My pilea did that too after I bought it. I've found that it likes bright indirect light and filtered or distilled water (some plants can be pretty sensitive to the chemicals in tap water). I also only water it when the soil is completely dry.

The vet prices are pretty typical for NYC. You may want to look into pet insurance. Emergency visits and any sickness visits can unfortunately cost a lot more than a standard checkup with vaccines.

I think it all depends on where you go. There are many vets whom charge a lot less or a lot more. Pet stores like petco don’t charge that much and they’re well taken care of also.. It all depends on the area.

Plants need a way to drain water out if theres too much water. If the planter you have doesn't drain, the roots could've rotted. Otherwise overwatering or too much sun exposure could cause that too. We cant treat all plants the same. Each one has it's one environment it grew in so knowing the type of plant and doing research on it helps too. Good luck!

That's average for a vet bill in a high cost of living city. It is harder with puppies because they need to go more often in the first year though. When my pup goes in for routine stuff or non-emergency things(parasite test, flea/tick meds, upset stomach, etc) I usually spend anywhere from $300-550. Pet insurance can be really helpful if you find a good company but you still have to pay out of pocket and wait to be reimbursed/for your claim to be approved. Usually, it's only a certain percentage, not the full amount. If you can I suggest getting Dobby insurance now, my adult rescue dog has been denied insurance because he has a history of seizures and allergies/digestive issues. I've had insurance for my cat since she was a kitten and it really came in handy at the start of quarantine when she had an emergency- her bills were around $800 total and I was reimbursed for $700.

Your vet bill is very normal! especially considering they ran lab work and updated dobby on all his vaccines. I own two large dogs and have fostered rescues for the past 2 years. Some tips for saving a bit of money on vet bills are to sign up for a "health care plan" than will typically include 1 free monthly checkup (optional) and all regular vaccinations covered. Depending on the plan, a monthly payment can cover emergency visits, exam fees, or even discount surgeries. Hope Dobby's ears feel better! You are such a great dog mom

Your pancake plant you think is dying needs water once a week. But too much water is not good obvs. You need a pot with drainage holes so that the excess water can run out of the pot. If its not that the soil might be out of nutrients for the plant. So you can buy liquid fertilizer that you mix with the water according to what it says on the bottle, and give that every 2 weeks, or repot the plant into new and thus fertile soil. :)
@mollyb2516

Happy belated birthday! Your pilea plant could also be dying due to too much water/not enough sun. It looks like it's in a good place. Usually a good rule of thumb is bright, indirect light and water it once a week. You only need to check 2-3 inches deep into the soil for dryness and then it's usually time to water. Mine likes to go back and forth on whether it wants to thrive or not haha.

I know vets are all different across states but maybe look into your vet or another and see if they have any plans where you pay a certain amount each month and it covers the basics (such as cleaning, vet visits, the normal vaccines, claw clipping, etc. Except for unexpected visits, medicine or vaccines that aren't normal or are unexpected) (something similar to insurance but not really). My fiance and I pay $30 a month and it covers all of the basics unless your puppy gets sick from a bacteria it wouldn't normally get (things like that). It has saved us a ton of money! Just food for thought. And as mentioned it may be different in New York but this is what my vet offers and I live in Tennessee! Hope this helps!

This is probably NY pricing. In LA it's much lower. For future reference, try asking for a puppy package. That covers all puppy vaccines, neuter/spay, and deworming medication. That cost me about $300 in LA. I had cocker spaniels and keeping up with their ear infections can be expensive. Generally happened every summer when the weather got humid. Try buying your prescriptions online and look into pet insurance. Usually, any sort of lab work up is going to cost a lot especially if they don't do it in-house. A lot of smaller veterinary clinics send their labs out, that might be contributing to the price. Also look online for free vet clinics that might happen on the weekends at dog parks. Honestly, that was a lot of stuff you got in one day. LOL! Love your content! Happy Birthday!

I’m from NYC, and your vet bill seems reasonable! I pay around 350-400 for the annual check up and vaccines for my dog.

Your pilea peperomioides should be fine! It’s most likely still recovering from the shipping (I ordered 5-6 of them online and all of them dropped a few leaves within the first few weeks) don’t water it too much because they are prone to root rot. I don’t use a moisture meter with mine but a good rule of thumb is to water it thoroughly when it looks droopy! If it’s perky and happy, best to leave it alone. They do not like constant moist soil. Also, I didn’t comment this in your last video but check out Etsy for plants!! You’ll get better prices for a lot of houseplants big or small rather than spending a lot of money on one that comes with a pot you don’t want from those fancy websites!

I would look around for other vets but it does seem like a somewhat normal bill. The highest I ever paid for my dog was about 181(?) because my dog had slight ear infections in both ears so it included the examination and prescribed ointment. But other than that it stays under 145 which seems cheap compared to other states.

The vet bill sounds normal to me. I always suggest people to get pet insurance because its much cheaper in the long run. Because no matter what, as your pup gets older they will start to have issues due to old age or issues common in that breed. Pet insurance works just like our insurance and you can talk to your local vet about potential packages and where to find the best deal for you and your fur baby :)

I live in NYC and have a big dog (around 65lbs and 3 years old) the vet bill sounds typical for a puppy. But it sounds like that vet just went all in vs what is really needed. For example the tick vaccine or was it medication? My vet gave me the option if I wanted to do that but actually told me I didn't need it unless I plan to take my dog hiking where there might be ticks, they said i could come back any time to get the vaccine/medicine if i changed my mind. Your daily visit fee seems a bit high at $95, I pay around 70 -80 for the base visit. I take my dog to ABC Animal hospital in LES if you want to check it out!

Yea this is definitely normal especially for new shots and tests. I have pet insurance that I pay monthly which covers a lot of things including yearly teeth cleaning and bloodwork. Also discounted meds. Which helps a lot.

5:44 lots of plants don’t like being drowned with water! You have to let most plants dry out (usually a finger poke into the dirt up to your second knuckle, if it’s damp don’t water, if it’s dry water). That one that all the leaves are coming out on is because it’s rotting at the root base. The black rot is creeping up the base of the leaves and that’s why they came out so easily. You’re literally giving your plants too much love!! It also depends on your ambient temp in your home too. If the ax is always running your plants won’t need more water, unlike a warmer, sunnier place where they’ll need more water in the summer verses the winter. Most plants you can get away with watering every two weeks. Some plants I ignore until they tell me thy need water (drooping, super light when I pick them up). You just have to keep learning, keep getting more different plants that might suit your sunlight better. That’s why I like to grow small cheap plants to big expensive-looking ones :)

I live in Newport Jersey City. I usually take my dog to Banfield Hospital for vaccine. I believed it's a pet hospital under petsmart. it's everywhere. You pay like monthly fee of 60 dollar to get regular check up, doctor appointment and most of the vaccines are included as well. I'm sure they have Banfield in Brooklyn as well!! I hope you see it. I usually don't need to pay when go to vet for vaccines and doctor appointment. It's affordable and get the job done!

Puppies are expensive but tbh I spent a lot of unfortunate money on my poodles countless ear infections. If anyone is a poodle owner they soon learn that they will deal with a couple ear infections. I learned that all you need is an ear solution that can be found for so much cheaper on Amazon and works the best than any vet visit. I still always use this after I bathe or take my baby to the groomers. Just one drop to keep any unwanted wax that causes potential yeast infections at bay and now never deal with any infections! The medince that works is zymox inflammation relief with 0.5 hydrocortisone, the purple colored face. Directions are on the bottle but use for 7 days. Do NOT use any other products with this solution. It starts to naturally flush out the ear wax on it's own so dont be alarmed when you see lots of wax surrounding the ear during the first couple of days. Thats the built up ear wax that was in the ear canal surfacing. Just clean it off whenever you see it. And Dobby's ears should be good after the week treatment. Right now it's on sale on amazon for $21 :)

they say if can’t afford the vet, don’t get a pet! but yes Michelle the bill sounds very normal to me. I would suggest finding a vet that has a WellCare program where you get discounts off the annual vaccines and examination with the veterinarian.

I think the Pilea got a little overwatered. Some of the roots have rotted, but you can repot it to save the plant!

The vet bill does seem normal, but next time BEFORE they administer everything you can ask for an itemized bill to see what is absolutely necessary, and if you want to space things out you can ask them then so that it’s a bit more doable financially. Also everything they prescribe medicine for my cat we check on chewy.com or any other notable pet med website and check to see if they have cheaper options! Which they usually do!!
