Nice look at the different types of neighborhoods. When I was there in the '80s, Wahiawa nearest Schofield and into the town had that same look to it. There use to be a Pizza Hut where one of those used car dealerships is. Schofield had a golf course that got replaced with housing. None of those houses were in that gulch by Mililani. There was no Kapolei and Walmart hadn't gotten to Hawaii yet. The sugar industry was still around, and I think Kunia Road had the sugar cane fields.

Left in 81. Schofield still had the row houses on post. We would walk by the golf course coming home from the pool. All gone now.

AMR was a good spot to live. Gated area down by Navy side, close to Tripler and easy commute to downtown if need be. Centrally located on the island easy to get anywhere. It's also far from Schofield but only 20 minutes from post became traffic is always going the other way.

I was stationed at Schofield 1972-1975. The first year was really fun, the second year wasn't bad and the third year really sucked. We use to go to Wheeler to eat were they Air Force had the best food . Their was an Army beach up towards the north shore we would go to , stop by Dillingham and pick some shrooms and enjoy off time .Only so many times you can drive around an island before it's time to leave.

@@movingtohawaii Thanks for the video, our family was stationed at Schofield 1976-1979. I remember Lakeview Circle very well, I had split paper route(s) on post and on Lakeview (morning Star-Bulletin, afternoon Honolulu Advertiser), Army families would tip a dollar or so, Wahiawa families would give me Lichee and mangoes (kind of funny we had a massive mango and avocado tree, but I always took them 5:40. My first paycheck job was as a delivery driver for the Pizza Hut franchise. The owner had a fleet of red Mazdas we drove all over the central valley, including all the Naval Comms bases and upper Schofield Quads! Our competition included Kim's Kitchen, they had yellow Toyotas and Magoo's Pizza "No Huhu Call Magoo's." Many of the wait staff were Aussie kids who all roomed together on the North Shore. I'll have to look up the book you mentioned. Mahalo for the memories.

This is a great video. Thanks for the video. It brought back a lot of memories. I grew up in the area next to kipapa elementary school in waipio. Waipio was a pineapple plantation camp of maybe 30 houses. There were pineapple fields as fas as the eye could see. Our house was about 30 yards from the pineapple field. Where the pineapples were in season and ready for harvest I could walk to the pineapple field and get a couple of big pineapples for free without getting caught. The pineapples were sweet and ono because they were ripe. I Went to leilehua intermediate and high school. My friends and I used to go to schofield barracks to watch the 25th infantry division intramural football games. The boys of my small class of 4th, 5th, and 6 graders in kipapa school went to Kunia to play their boys touch football. Kunia was just a small pineapple camp like waipio then. whitmore village, and Pomoho village outside of wahiawa going to the north shore were pineapple camps too. Wahiawa was a nice little town. The weather there was very mild and the humidity was not that high. There was a nice bakery on Kilani avenue. I enjoyed my younger years in the waipio and wahiawa area. The people were very friendly there, like family actually.

@movingtohawaii
@movingtohawaii 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Molly! Traffic to and from Wheeler to the east side can actually work in your favor considering you’ll be going opposite the main flow of traffic both in the morning and afternoon. Typically, traffic flows west to east in the morning and vice versa in the afternoon. You’ll be going east to west, then north in the morning probably on a route like H3 West > H1 West > H2 North. Your route can take anywhere from 15-25 mins depending on door to door.
