Great interview. Thanks for talking about being called crazy for moving abroad. I’m three weeks away from being a long term multiple year slow traveler after two extended exploratory slow travel trips to SE Asia and all I hear is I’m “crazy, stupid, out of my mind” meanwhile there are armed car jackings every day, extreme violence and crime at all time levels here in the Bay Area. This is the most liberating thing I’ve done after a lifetime of doing things others don’t think I can do. Thank you Dan 🙏🏼

The other thing I noticed watching this video is it was very quiet in his neighborhood or inside of his apartment. He didn’t hear a lot of roosters are barking dogs. I could live in that place for sure!!! I’m going to have to be very selective once I get there because I cannot stand barking dogs or roosters.

I like this apartment and it's at a great price for those who want to have a "base" location and travel to other places. I also agree with doing the hotel stay for 2 months when one first arrives to check things out and find a more permanent location for a place to live so one doesn't get stuck with living a year in a place they end up not liking.

Dan, the apartment in this video would not rank up there as a place most expats would live in for any length of time. It might be cheap, but it is a 2 room place (living/kitchen and bedroom) that most people would find depressing. Th reality in Dumaguete is that 22,000 to 25,000 pesos is probably the base rent for a decent furnished place, and even higher in Valencia. Cheers

28:15 I was thinking about this the other day. I’ve been looking at locations with a pool & gym etc. say $40-50 a night. You’re talking about $20 a night hotels. So say $25 for a pool & gym. I wouldn’t pay $25 to go swimming at home! I’d probably pay that at home for swimming and a gym - but I don’t recall ever doing both in one day. Anyway, yet another great interview guys. Your content is top notch!

Anyway as you know it's possible and very nice to live in the Philippines for not so much money at all. I also spent a total of 1200$ a month everything included and that includes for my Filipino wife and we have a kid together. I also spent 560$ all included(food and drinks too) in the past but it was not comfortable at all.

So if you keep your food at about $200 a month (which is reasonable) then with $320 for everything else, don't tell me you can't live there on about $500 a month. I didn't say travel, buzz, and everything else. I said just as a minimum, it can be done.

Exactly. I have lived on less than $500 a month here in America for decades so I don't know why these people have to spend so much money over there. And I want for nothing. But I also love to cook at home, and I spend.less than $100 a month on food and I need to lose weight! Over there I will spend probably $50 a month on food, and $100 a month rent (they are out there all over) when all is said and done. I will probably be around $300-$350 a month there. Some people just have too much money and try and find ways to waste it.

@@KevinVenturePhilippines Well in America you must have lived in your car or just didn't pay rent. Because even the most ran down shack in America will cost you more then $500 a month just in rent. I live on $2,500 in America. My rent alone is $1450 a month. Food is also very expensive.

@@kokalti It won't let me reply, he must have blocked me or there is a set limit on number of words you can use? Oh well, I own my own land and use solar, so I don't pay rent, and property tax is next to nothing here.

@@jackbaldwin3649 I understand. I am just a musician that got close to making it big, but never did. I don't have a pension, etc like most of you. I have rich friends that have always lived high on the hog, but I just always traveled. I finally decided I should buy some land, so I did, just a cheap acre. And decided solar would be better than an electric bill, and it is. Most Americans don't do that. I grew up in Alaska living off the land, etc. So the transition to the Philippines won't be as hard for me. I am happy with little here in New Mexico, and will have more there. I have had many things in my life, but the only thing that ever seemed to really matter was happiness. And it took me far too long to realize, that happiness is the only thing we cannot buy. Because it's not for sale. It's a completely different thing, and level. And one that we must each find for ourselves.

I'm just guessing and I've been to Philippines and watched hundreds of videos but just a guess so many expats in dumagutte the prices may be higher although it sounds cheap. I stayed mostly in a province called dalagute.

Dan, the questions got to be asked. Why do so many Americans settle in Dumaguete when they've never been to the Philippines before? Seems crazy to put your roots down without checking out other possibilities. I knoow you'll feel the same, but then again you're a different type of American, to most others.
