The Joseon dynasty, also known as the Great Joseon State, was Korea's last and longest-lived imperial dynasty, lasting from 1392 to 1910. General Yi Seong-gye, later known as Taejo, founded the dynasty in July 1392 after overthrowing Goryeo in Kaesong. The dynasty was named after the ancient kingdom Gojoseon and was based on Confucianism. Taejo established the capital at Hanyang, which is now Seoul, and built Gyeongbok Palace in 1395
The Joseon dynasty was known for its benevolent rulers in the 15th and 16th centuries, who promoted science and education. However, the dynasty was also plagued by internal conflicts, civil unrest, and political struggles. In 1592-1598, Japan invaded Korea, but Korean naval forces led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin were able to block the Japanese supply lines and win a decisive victory in the Strait of Myeongnyang
In the 19th century, Japan and Qing China competed for power in East Asia, and Korea was affected by the Imo Rebellion of 1882 and the Donghak peasant rebellion of 1894. In 1897, the Korean Empire replaced the Joseon dynasty
