@@mpianayan4260... Im very familiar with the Monk 36 "trawler". No, its NOT a "world traveler" boat. Its a coastal cruiser. However, that being said, As for surviving thunderstorms? Let me just say this. That boat will out survive 99% of the people who own it. In other words, they'll be scared to death off the water, LONG before the boat is in any serious jeopardy from rough water or winds. The boat can take MUCH more punishment than any average boater who's not a seasoned Captain. I hope that answers your question. To be an ocean crossing vessel is another breed. It must be full displacement hull and carry an enormous payload of fuel, and many redundant systems. Something like a Kady Krogan or a Willard is more atuned to long offshore passages. This boat is not. But, very few people who own those capable boats would ever make an offshore passage in them. You're better off in a sailing vessel if you want to do serious passage making offshore and crossing oceans.

Love it. I did the same in order to save money and retire early. It was the early days of the "simple living" movement, shortly after the book, "Your Money or Your LIfe," was first published in 1990. My boat wasn't anywhere near as nice as Joe's, but I loved living on it anyway. It was a 1972, 35-foot pontoon houseboat that I owned for 23 years and lived on for eight. It was more like a floating RV. I was able to save about 70% of my income while living on that boat as I worked my way toward retirement. It took about 15 years before I retired, but that's not bad considering I had almost nothing when I began. And it wasn't even a sacrifice. There is nothing better than living on the water, at least in my view. I loved every minute of it. I've been retired for 13 years now and often think of returning to a life on the water.

Dual Cummins diesels with a back up 3 banger for emergency propulsion power and to power the electronics and other items on cloudy and windless days. Dual automatically cross fed fuel, potable (clean) and gray water tanks to help trim the boat. There's more but it's to many to list other than wind and solar power generators plus an at least 10 battery fully automated power storage system. I really envy his lifestyle. A big salute from this Coast Guard Aviation Veteran to him. Like to know his Rate and Rank.

Ret 21 year Navy Vet, 8 year liveaboard previously while on active duty. Great video and it looks like you chose your boat well for the purpose it serves you. Its got a lot of great features for a liveaboard. I think that "drop in cabinet storage" is actually a "cold box" where you use ice to keep things like milk, cold cuts and beer cold to conserve space in the small Fridges that are often installed on a boat. I used mine for storage too but you can also install a chiller plate and keep it cold that way if you want and need more space.
@raywells28583 жыл бұрын
If your gonna be a liveaboard...dont underestimate the need for a great galley, large fridge, plenty of storage space and bathroom facilities! Dont skimp on boat size either although after about 40 ft slips become harder to find and much more expensive per a foot. Big enough "to work well enough" will most likely find you seriously wanting in the near future! Before you buy a used boat, make sure you spring for the extra expense for a out of water Marine Survey so you get a rock solid boat to start your adventure on. It will be the best 500-1000 dollars you have ever spent, probably get the owner to come down on price and will be needed most likely for insurance purposes. Insurance is cheaper for a diesel vs gas and much safer! Be advised most insurance companies will not insure the boat if they find out your living on it!!! If you live in an area that gets cold, unlike very mild San Diego (ie...Seattle), condensation is a huge issue you will have to figure out how to deal with!

Hi Joe, great lifestyle you have built... it suits your relaxed attitude perfectly. Living the dream!!! Yewwwwwww... enjoy! I designed my own Trawler in the 80's then lived aboard and traveled the East Coast and the Bahama's, before we had kids. Two things that I'd like to pass on 1- a Bruce anchor.... holds better in ALL bottoms, than any other anchor IMO. Easy to break free when it's time to weigh anchor. Big plus is no moving parts, so it stays tight and quiet on the roller in choppy seas. 2- I set mine up with a powerful inverter system / high output marine alternator to charge my big Deep Cycle batteries. It'll run your air fryer without shore power!

My art studio is on our homestead/farm, where we grow about 95% of all our food, including spices, and corn for meal. This lifestyle is a VERY busy one with long hours, but we enjoy it. For those of you thinking of living on a yacht, remember what BOAT means; Bring On Another Thousand. Yacht maintenance is expensive, if you can even find anyone to work on them, which is extremely difficult here in East TN. So you need to be smart and handy, to do the work yourself.

And if you're taking a nap and someone else has the wheel watch, if the engine loses or gains ten rpm you're on your feet. Yup, you made me laugh

What can I say? That is awesome ... Damm I’m jealous. Your boat is perfect, so much freedom to travel. I was looking at a van, but watching this a boat looks great.

Good for you! I’m 64, teach the military overseas and write, have my USCG Master Captain’s license and own a 50’ MY. I will retire onto a trawler much like yours; have no interest in owning another house. Once you live on the water, it’s hard to go back to land. Love to sail, but for living space, trawlers are the best. You are doing it the right way. Was that a Koa guitar? I just bought a Taylor K24ce Builders Edition to play out on my boat. Keep enjoying and doing it your own way! Fair winds.

I can say only good things about what I saw and heard about you, your beautiful boat and your great life. Very inspiring. Your partner is a lucky person. You are quite a communicator, keep it up.

This brings back fond memories of when I dated a cute boy in my twenties who lived on his boat in the north bay of California. Put a smile on my face.

Way to go, Shipmate. This makes me want to go get a boat (although keeping my 4 kids and wife from going stir crazy would require something a bit bigger than yours).

Great video. I also lived on a Monk Trawler in Chula Vista, Lowe's Coronado and the Navy Marina on the Strand and had the time of my life! You've got it all down!

Terrific tour man - love your outlook and your boat. Been boating 40 plus years and you nailed it. All your senses change once you step on board. Every vibration, sound and scent kicks off an automatic internal assessment. Good or bad? Fine or fubar? Would love to live aboard a little ship like yours someday. Great you are doing it now.

I lived on a 1969 55' Seagoing (brand name) houseboat for 5 years. Not nearly as nice as yours but still a great way to live. Two 318 Chryslers and Dana stern drives, 6.5 Onan genset. Lived in Greenville MS. for almost a year, I drove it from Greenville, to Clear Lake , TX. Stayed 2 years. Took 2 hurricanes, one a direct hit, drove it back to Greenville, lived on it 2 more years. I still have never slept as well since I moved back on land!

I'm hoping by the time service is up I can go find a boat as this guy has. There's something about that simple boat life that seems just a bit less stressful than renting an apartment like I have been.

Great for you and seems well deserved! You aren't kidding about the condition of the wood throughout boat!! Big thumbs up to prior owner(s) for sure.

Smart move there Sailor man, not completely cheaper than shore life, but you have a good handle on things and are learning more self sufficient living skills. I see you reside in San Diego Harbor area. very nice harbor. Stay with it, you will like it better than shore life.

My dad was building 36’ Munk design boat in basement at the top of a switchback driveway when I was born. Tethered to mast I had free run and many amazing childhood adventures on salt water.

So many hidden costs associated with boats I doubt its cheaper than living normally in the long run. That being said I love this.

That said, houses are constantly needing things like roofing, furnace/chimney repair, landscaping, plumbing, kitchen remodeling, dealing with cellar flooding, etc, etc.

Saving that BAH! Good on you! When I stationed in Key west, I moved in to an RV and was able to stuff my TSP (retirement account) nicely! I lived on base in the RV park. I miss that life. I had the best views, amazing sunsets, and near the water.
