The CPS was always known as the Criminal Protection Society in policing circles. The salaries for it's lawyers was poor and the phrase "pay peanuts and get monkeys" was often quoted. We used to joke about them with good lawyers from private practices, when they were hired to prosecute on behalf of CPS.
