I got to serve this man and his daughter when they stayed at the Mandarin Oriental for a Memorial Day event. It was a legitimate honor. The guy carried himself with an air of experience and unique dignity. And he wore his Medal of Honor with pride. It was definitely one of the most unique service experiences I can recall. The dining floor was was busy and packed. A lot of the hotel occupancy was service members for the event. When he came in in a wheelchair with his daughter, they were brought onto the floor by the hostess, but there was a pause. There wasn't enough room in the isles for his chair to easily fit through with all the chairs occupied. But then came a little moment of servicemember magic. A bunch of the people in the chairs looked over, saw him, saw the wheelchair, saw the Medal of Honor on his chest, and they all cleared the isle for him. No one said anything that I could hear or recall. It was just a bunch of heads and eyes turning to him, recognizing what his decoration symbolized, recognizing what the space created as an issue, and several service members just acted to make it easier to let him get to his table. It was a small moment of respect, but damn it resonated. Sakato himself was an absolute gentleman, and while I was serving him for that breakfast I got the impression his daughter was very used to this sort of thing. They handled it with grace and respect (also asked that I be their server the next morning as well). And Sakato actually gave me one of his personal challenge coins. I've kept it to this very day, and it's one of the most treasured in my collection.
