Living In A Cave House | Abandoned House Carved Into Stone Frozen In Time For Decades

We explore three unique houses built into the cliff face in the 1700s.
Living inside a rock was reality for a number of families right up until the 1950s.
These unique houses were a fine solution to a housing shortage.
Complete with locking doors, windows fireplaces and a number of rooms, these one of a kind converted caves are surprisingly homely.
Some original furnishings still remain, allowing us to imagine what life really would have been like here.

This is my favorite of your explores. You captured the home-ness of these cave houses. Made me wonder about the generations of folks who called them home. Makes me angry that they are not being preserved. They are the heritage of that part of the country. A national treasure and a testament to the ingenuity of the people of those times. Thank you for taking us with you, especially during the lockdown. 💚

My mother lived in rock houses during the 2nd world war . Worcestershire. Her and her sister were young married women with young children. She said she was very happy there and so was her sister. I don't know if these are they. I have an old photo of them .

The house with the windows at around 6 mins is my Great Great Grandmothers rock house. She lived there until she passed away in 1948. I have a photo of her stood in the doorway of this house. It sold at auction a few years ago for a lot of money!

Jess was just about to ask about the bottles standing in another holder - They were, before fridges, the way to keep wine/milk cool... They work by filling the outside holder up with water, and it slowly evaporates off, causing the fluid in the bottle to chill... Nice video - Thank you..

The jars are old stoneware marmalade jars. It looks like someone has collected the old bottles and jars and put them together on the shelves. These cave houses would have been cold and damp and evaporative coolers would have not been needed. Wales does not have a warm climate.

Hi@@leech976 yes I expect the jars would have been used and re-used for many things, not just marmalade. If you Google "W.P. Hartleys glazed jars" you will see many examples of this type of jar. W.P. Hartley still manufacture marmalades and jams. The jars would have been glazed inside and outside so that they were not porous. I think that evaporative coolers need a porous pot to allow the water pass through and be evaporated, also they need a dry, hot climate, they would not work in the cool, damp climate of Wales..

How truly wonderful! You just find out about the history of the items there. The lace and the embroidered fireplace screen would probably be 18th-19thc. The two armchairs you didn't mention are 1920's and the pouffé is either a child's chair or a seemstress. The cooking fireplace, the lady of the house would sit in front of it whilst preparing the food, to also keep warm! Fascinating! Please don't just leave it, get in touch with the right authorities to preserve it all, it's magical and a rarity, plus there's many items there that are precious!!

I’d love to buy a cave make into a home, it’s just so quaint me all over . I love this kind of thing. The cave will hold the heat in the winter and stay cool throughout the summer. Have you ever been over to Skye and visited the old black houses etc they have been preserved for visitors. See how they used to live great history. Skye is well worth a visit, would love to see a video of you two there. I’ve not seen any other videos visiting the black houses. If you liked the caves then you would love to get a feel how things were in Skye. There are quite a few good explores. Oh guys I so do love your videos, another one with top notch content. Yesterday I watched a vid of a Chinese guy that dug out a cave house. He used power tools to do it though. He couldn't afford to build a house but after digging out his apartment and selling off the useable large chunks of rock he's probably better off now.

Picture early on is of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. If you search it you can find the trademark "Royal Hawaiian" on the front of the hotel. It has had some alterations but is commonly known as "The Pink Hotel" for it's distinct coloration.

I think the rock houses are on the land of the house you see around 21:00 and have been used as sheds, that explains the reason for the electrical power, the old prints furniture and insulation being stored in them. They would have gone through a lot of changes in their 300- 400 years history.

What a unique find and interesting video. It looks as though the Artist Ha Van Vuong was British born, with French parents. His paintings (if oil) can sell for up to £800 whereas reproductions fetch for about £30-£50

Amazing! Those paintings need to be saved as they are so unique. Looks like an artist lived there. Coober Pedy here in Australia is a mining town in the bush where all the houses, hotels etc are underground as its so hot. There are also natutal caves along the Nullabour that people once lived in. Love this explore. Thank you 💜

All that I can imagine is a story or poem... Hidden away in Durban, silently hides someone's abode. It hasn't been seen for ages, but it used to be someone's home. An iron stove warms their abyss, tinier than the usual. As they sit by arched windows, looking out at the land that is unbelievably beautiful. Cut out of sand-stone, slowly bit by bit, a home was slowly made for an artist, he was possibly a Brit. Moss slowly grows on the arched walls of someone's forgotten home. Creeping along the etched out walls of someone's home of stone. Blue glass glistens in the sunlight's rays, onto the sand floor below. Somehow forgotten in time, but now Sam & Jess know. They will figure out what happened here. It's like, 'all in a day's work'. They will figure out the clues using their found artwork. The wine on the shelf, the canvases everywhere. It was a talented person's escape to get away from the world's nightmare.

@@cynthiairish497 I have written poems all of my life, mostly just for fun. Only one of my Teachers in high school took notice, he was the only one. He once told me, "as the acorn, so grows the oak tree". I have never forgot his crpytic message, but I go on writing while sipping my cheap coffee :)

Amazing old cave houses, would love to see photos of what they were like back in the day. That old print 10:28 was probably a product of Espania, I have a similar one with same frame I brought home in the mid-1980s. Looking at all the other artwork, I think the folks were well travelled. We don't have anything this awesome in the states sadly. The house I live in was built in 1902 though, so that's pretty cool. It's basically a historic building. It's just a house though. Adobe and wood.
