Hiya Deborah. I’m curious, because part of our dream in the next 5 years, is to leave the rat race behind. When you don’t have a permanent address, how does healthcare work? Hospital, GP, dental care, all that? Thank you if you reply, Marc.

You will need a relation for an address, then register everything from there as long as you trust them ! I've been doing it around 15 years and if you want out of the rat race then this is the nearest thing but we still have to put up with the nutjobs in power, starmer is trying his best to make things very hard for the working class

My "retirement" started at 48 when I built an apartment on a truck :) But really it just gave me my time back that was never anybody elses to have to begin with. 5 years later It paid itself off and I am saving money with part time money. I went big too, mainly because I got twice the space for half the price of a van and I could fit 2000w on the roof which is more power than I can use 9 months of the year. Like he says, all the room you could ever need and a stress free life while the rest of the world is imploding from the weight of its billionaires.

Im still trying to decide if I go for a motorhome or buy a van and convert it myself but as with everything trying to get the Funds together isnt easy and I really dont want to take a motorhome, camper on finance. I definitely would really consider vanlife if the UK was actually friendly to vanlifers, but I'm going to be buying a narrowboat, you haven't got as much freedom because you're limited to the waterways but at least it's not illegal to stop after a day's cruising and moor up. Unfortunately even though more and more people are doing van life because they can't afford to buy or rent a home the UK government would seem to rather have them homeless and living in a cardboard box on the street than help them. After they eradicate vanlifers narrowboaters are next, but hopefully the narrowboat life has got a few years left in it yet.

I am on the Leeds Liverpool canal nearly every day, l cycle it end to end a few times each year. The increase in full timers in the past 5 years is incredible, talk about boat/lock rage! What l've also noticed is the recent arrival of very cheap, often tiny, delapidated grp cruisers inhabited by folk you wouldn't want to mix with, especially when they are cooking wildlife on the towpath. 😁

You fix it like you would any vehicle or house? By dead do you mean if the engine has blown up? Just get it replaced? Maintenance helps to avoid and prolong reaching the dead part
@davewoodman10 сағат бұрын
@phoenixstone4920 I mean when the vehicle becomes uneconomical to repair. I believe Alan said he took early retirement, and the van cost him £40k, I assume that he like myself doesn't have that kind of money lying around to replace the van ten years in to the future? As I'd like to copy Alan's lifestyle in a few years time, I was looking for his ideas of overcoming this problem.

He is so right about UK councils as they are so anti motorhome / campervans. They actually lose businesses money. Lancaster and Morecambe council are currently deciding ti stop motorhomes and campers parking on the prom. Yes plenty go but there have been minimal complaints of owners causing rubbish and emptying their toilets down the drains. If this is occurring it will be the very small minority, so the council are going to lose businesses so much money.
