From a Navy retiree, thank you for your service. I just moved here this last month for the next adventure in my life. Good luck to all three of you. Have you checked to see if there are any military organizations there. There is a VFW here in Pattaya, I will attend my first meeting there next week. Do you know about the APO mailbox you can get there in Bangkok? I will apply for mine once my retirement visa arrives in the next ten days or so. I will learn more about that any other things next week I hope. Just another resource for us to use. Take care.

Cute family. The question is, are they happy spending this? My suggestions for them if they want to reduce food costs: shop at Macro. Starbucks is not local, find a good local coffee shop. Enrol your daughter into a expat kids Thai cooking class, she loves cooking. 3000 USD could easily be reduced to 2000 USD. Chris, give us an update in a month.

Here is an old man with 73years of experience advice, pay off your retirement home before you retire. You have to own it free and clear in a area of the country with low land taxes. Then get you a reliable financial consultant/ wealth manager to help cordinate your finances better. If that is the only thing you do you will be able to retire with social security and be ok. I did just that and it worked for me. It continues to work for me to this very day. The world goes crazy I can still afford my taxes (very low) I still have a place to live. I also garden and live simply but that is for another day.

@kevinp8108
@kevinp8108 Жыл бұрын
@@Dime333 - It's actually cheaper to pay out-of-pocket for non-life-threatening procedures. Many expats only have medical insurance that covers catastrophic events such as major accidents, cancer, heart attacks...etc. Most simple treatments would cost about $30 USD at a mid-level hospital. In the States, I paid $150 for an eye infection, and this didn't include the antibacterial eye drops! I have medical insurance but I did not meet the deductible of $2K USD so I had to pay the full amount! Oh, I forgot, I had to pay a $50 office visit before I could see a doctor in addition to the $150 plus cost of drugs. The US federal government has let the insurance and medical industry run amok with no-cap pricing! Hospitals can charge whatever they want since there is no limit on each procedure. Hospitals get away with this because they know the insurance companies will pay the high-cost bill, and then the insurance companies pass the high cost back to the consumer as a very high monthly premium.

700 is gay, but you can donate 5 USD to a buddhist monk for him to take the gay away. Well, 700 is enough for some things. You can rent a room with AC in Bangkok for next to nothing. 100 USD should do it. You will not have much of a kitchen, but street food is cheap. Or you can improvise a kitchen. Now you have 600 USD left for food and utilities. Bangkok suburbs might work really well for you. If you can try to stick to 500 USD a month and build a buffer. Maybe get an online job part-time, make another 1000 USD a month, and now you're living very comfortably in a Bangkok suburb and saving money for a rainy day.

Well said! And some of our eating habits are definitely due to excitement of being here that could be avoided later when things settle down. I love Thai food but couldn’t eat it EVERYDAY as people are suggesting. There’s so much interesting yummy food here from all over the world! But I agree, you definitely have to make sure to use self control and beware of all temptations that come with Thailand.

Just moved to Thailand two days ago. still trying to recover from the 12-hour difference. Now I just need to start looking for a teaching job. Should not be a problem as I have all my paperwork required and 8 years of ESL experience in China. I am excited to see what Thailand offers me. I do know that I would like to work outside of Bangkok. When expats get tied down in large cities, they seldom explore outside of the city, even on holidays. When an expat lives outside in the country or on the rim of a city, they tend to go explore more and take more trips.

I’ve been living in Bangkok since 1989. Beware of agents, they’ll take a high percentage of any job they get you. Get your teaching and education papers translated to Thai. Find your district office to apply for a government teaching job, 600 Baht an hour. They’ll take your papers and have an interview sometime in September or October for the teaching year. You can also apply at private schools.

Great video again Chris! It's good to see a family living on somewhat of a normal budget and not having to count every penny they have to live on. I'm sure in time they will probably change their lifestyles when they reach their 50's. To put things in perspective, my wife and I will be retiring in a few years in Thailand from Hawaii. Our budget will be a conservative $5K a month by then (We spend way more than that now living conservatively in Hawaii).

For me, the big variable in Thailand is the cost of food. This week I’m in Bangkok and I’m trying out some restaurants. I’m not really keeping track, but I’m sure I’ve been spending 1000 baht a day, or more, just for foid. That’s not necessary, but it’s entirely possible.
@kevinp8108
@kevinp8108 Жыл бұрын
@jasjas-rm9kc - 1000 baht per day is too much for Bangkok! If you could afford it, then why not? I could spend less than $5 USD per day at food vendors and/or at the food court at most shopping centers. It really depends on your lifestyle. I could eat delicious Thai food all the time but I do miss my American food sometimes and I will occasionally have my Mcdonald's and Pizza Hut.

I don't even spend 1000 baht per day in the US. You're probably going to expensive places and eating like you would back home. 100-200 baht per day is entirely possible to.
@ReneMedia
@ReneMedia Жыл бұрын
@@oSnapMillerTime not at all, and its not just “food” in the first place to spend on, thats a “i am a worker until death modern slavery” mentality. 100-200 baht per day, a joke man, you cant even live of that with street food nowadays or pay for it with health consequences. Street food loaded with MSG and re-used oil, carb shitty rice. Just 3 street food meals alone are 180 baht already in thailand nowadays, else ur under eating, then still u need snacks drinks and transport or entertainment. And this assuming poverty. The point is clear though, the west is broke. I mean even a decade ago in my early 20s i would spend 20$ on food in Netherlands alone, i think people misvalue life big big time if food isnt even priority 1. Might explain the super sized fast foods and people in usa. Same happens to thailand since a decade. The only way i could cut the budget drastically is if i eat processed shit foods from grocery markets. And live like im poor while i should not, cuts lifetime. You are what you eat like. And life is limited due to it for a significant part, most thais fsll death on the floor before 55-60 nowadays. Reality is 2 coffees at 120 baht, 3 meals at 120 each, total 480 baht already. Then still another 220 on snacks water fruit and others makes a total of 700 to then have the transportation costs or anything else being super modest and budget as a person. To live cheaper means you confine to a remote house in the sticks, in that case its pointless to even move here.
@oSnapMillerTime
@oSnapMillerTime Жыл бұрын
@@ReneMedia Well look at you, I'm glad you're so successful you don't need to have the mentality of saving money. But there is always someone who is doing better than you. Little grocery stores often sell pre-cooked meals in to-go containers and they range from 35-50 baht+ and yes it's real life and safe to eat. One is near Jasmine Hotel open 24 hours underground. Just because you don't know doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Prices have gone up since we were here 10 years ago. 2 bedrooms are way more expensive now and I don’t understand the price jump for 3 bedrooms (in Bangkok) Cheaper May look like Thai style home with no amenities, older, and Thai style bathroom. We picked the nicest place that checked our boxes and the most affordable for our family of 3 but all in all we live comfortably and are able to eat and travel as we want since it’s still more affordable than back home!

Hi there! To answer your question, yes! In most cases a teacher hired at an international school can receive a discount or the entire tuition may be covered. So, it’s too early to know how this will go, but I am also hoping to eventually get a job at an international school so that we can stay together😊
