What is the difference between living in Jamaica and BeIize?
I grew in Jamaica but then moved to Belize in my late teens. Both countries are very different in culture, food, people and dialect. There are a few similarities between Belize and Jamaica so adjusting life in Belize wasn't too difficult. In today's episode, I give you an insight on what it was like living in both Belize and Jamaica.

Hey everyone! I’d just like to make some corrections to something I mentioned in this video. It was made over 3 years ago and so I’ve definitely been learning and unlearning a lot of things. One such things is the referral to our creole languages as “dialects” or “broken English” I did a series this summer that dives into French-based creole languages. Just like many other Caribbean folks, we were never told that our creole are valid languages as we were even told to “speak properly” whenever we spoke creole. I’m recently debunked this lie for myself. If you’d like to check out the series I’m referring to, check out the link below kzbin.info/aero/PLqCE4W95vsFpxuMGIIpb2sO96JE9LxWfR

Good you clarified that issue. There is currently a push, and our patios is recognized in our country Jamaica. Educators, I am sure are currently encouraged to use the Patios language on entry to schools, as a language that children can use as a bridge to learning English _ for those who are basically fluent in patios.

@@CharisMaggieTV This is an excellent video. I have never been to Jamaica, but grew up in the Toronto area, so have at least picked up a passing familiarity with the culture and to an extent with Patois, through Jamaican friends, colleagues and just living in T.O. I worked for a number of years in Belize when I was in grad school and after I finished school (mostly back a bush out near Benque). It was initially surprising to me just how similar that Kriol and Patois are in many ways. It was also striking to me once I became a lot more comfortable listening to (and to an extent speaking) Kriol how it does have a cadence and rhythm to it quite unlike English in many ways. Some people that I knew who were not entirely comfortable speaking standard English (although they were by all accounts fluent in it) sounded like poets in Kriol. I agree with the above poster, recognizing that Patois and Belize Kriol are proper languages in their own right is an important thing.

Just got a chance to look at a few of your other Vlogs and Hallelujah! What I felt in my spirit about you was totally not crazy, eg. “FEELING STUCK?” and “FEED 1 MILLION”. Here is the massage after seeing just the one post and your reply: SELF-EMPOWERMENT IS THE GREATEST FORM OF LITERACY and leads to unusual achievements that is above and beyond the ordinary. YOU MY DEAR HAVE SET YOURSELF APART FROM THE ORDINARY by PASSIONATELY pursuing your dreams, CREATING A FUTURE OF STRENGTH CLOTHED IN GRACE, WEALTH AND CULTURAL INFLUENCE, WAY BEYOND THE LIMITATIONS OF NATURAL, SOCIAL AND SOCIETAL BORDERS, THAT CANNOT AND WILL NOT BE DENIED..... Post comment this minute: You are Blessed and highly favored. [Blessed = empowerment to succeed, prosper and flourish wherever you’re planted]. (Psalm 1)-- [Favor = receiving what you deserve, even when everything is stacked-up against you, screaming; you don’t deserve it]. Maybe it depends on where you live in Belize but whenever some of friends would text me, they would use I or ah. I noticed “I” being used mostly. But maybe that’s just me

Hello Michelle, thanks for watching. I moved from Belize about 6 years ago and only lived there for 2 years so I wouldn't be able to give you a factual answer. I've heard that many people retire in the southern parts of Belize as opposed to the city because it is nicer scenery wise. The crime rate is like any other Caribbean country from what I last hear. Your best bet would be to read up on the country to get all the specific info you need. If you would like me to refer you to someone living there who would know a bit more, I would be happy to. Send me a message on facebook and search for me charismaggie tv. Hope I was able to help a bit.

I worked in Belize for a number of years, was last back down to visit in 2015 (I'm from Newmarket, Ont, BTW). I think the main thing with Belize is the prevalance of crime in Belize City. Much of the rest of the country is safe, although it can be a bit dicey right near the Guatemalan border. I spent a lot of time in San Ignacio which is quite a nice town. The coast, particularly around Placencia and Hopkins is quite nice as well. OH- and the roads can be a tad trecherous as well, its advisable to avoid driving on the highways at night, drinking and driving is more of a thing down there and the roads can be poorly lit in the country. Most people are lovely, very friendly and accomodating most places. It isn't particularly cheap, however- cheaper than Canada for sure but not dirt cheap by any means, and some imported items can be quite expensive.

First of all lets define what's beans and what is peas. Beans - an edible seed, typically kidney-shaped, growing in long pods on certain leguminous plants. Peas - a spherical green seed that is eaten as a vegetable or as a pulse when dried. As we can see these two type of words have a different meaning. So I guess the rice and beans have it. So if you r going to call yours rice and peas make sure u have the peas mixed with your rice and then it can be called rice and peas. I think that ends the debate. Thank you. Team Belize. 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🇧🇿🇧🇿🇧🇿

Gungo is a pea. Red "peas" are actually red kidney beans. So it depends on which you're using at the time. So if it's rice and gungo. Then it's rice and peas. If it's red "peas" - it would be rice and beans.

The name Ideal originated from one of, if not, the first company to sell bag juice in Belize and they labeled it "Ideal". Pretty much a play on word; like "the IDEAL thirst quencher". As other bag juices came on the scene, all of them were called "Ideal" by the people. But when someone wants a specific brand of IDEAL, other than the basic ones, they would call it by its personal name brand, such as Polar-pop or by the type of ideal, such as milkey-way ideal, sugar-corn ideal, ..etc...

Belizean Kriol is not a dialect anymore; it's been a language for years. It's not just broken English; there are many other languages and original words incorporated.

Yes thanks for this comment. This video was made a few years back and I was ignorant on the matter. I’ve actually recently did a Kreyol/Creole series that features French-based creole and during that time I learnt that creole is a language and not a dialect as it has been wrongfully labeled for years.

That word 'hush' reminds me of the word 'ignorant'. In Jamaica it is used to describe a person who get angry easily. In America it is used to describe an illiterate person.
