Capitol Hill is one of the most historic and well-known neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. The area is home to the United States Capitol building, as well as the Library of Congress and Supreme Court. But Capitol Hill is more than just a hub of government activity-it's also a great place to live, work, and play.
If you're looking for things to do in Capitol Hill, Washington D.C., look no further! Here are 10 great options.
1) Visit the United States Capitol building: Of course, this one is a given. The United States Capitol building is one of the most iconic landmarks in the country, and it's right in your backyard if you live on Capitol Hill.
2) Guided tours of the Capitol are available Monday through Saturday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, and they're free of charge. Reservations are recommended but not required.
3) Stop by one of the many museums: The Smithsonian Institution operates 19 museums and galleries on the National Mall, and many of them are within walking distance of Capitol Hill. Some of our favorites include the National Museum of American History, the National Air and Space Museum, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Best of all? Admission to all Smithsonian museums is free!
4) Explore the neighborhood's green spaces: There are plenty of parks and gardens to enjoy in Capitol Hill, including Folger Park, Stanton Park, Lincoln Park, and Marion Park (to name just a few). If you're looking for something a little more strenuous, take advantage of the Capital Bikeshare program and explore some of D.C.'s other neighborhoods-there are stations located all over Capitol Hill.
5) Take a food tour: One of the best ways to get to know any neighborhood is through its food scene-and Capitol Hill does not disappoint. From hole-in-the Union Pub to Fine Foods Market & Catering Co., there are endless options for every taste bud. Good Stuff Eatery serves up delicious burgers, fries, and shakes made with freshly-sourced local ingredients. Be sure to try their famous "Obama Burger" - named after President Barack Obama who visited frequently when he lived in D. C.! If you want to sample a little bit of everything, we recommend taking a food tour with DC Metro Food Tours. They offer walking tours that focus on different cuisines (like Italian or Ethiopian), as well as tours that highlight specific neighborhoods (like Penn Quarter or Georgetown).
6) Shop till you drop: Whether you're looking for vintage finds or high-end designer duds, you'll be able to find it on Capitol Hill. Start at Eastern Market-one of D.C.'s oldest public markets-and then meander down Pennsylvania Avenue towards Union Station. A long the way, you'll pass boutique shops like Secondi Consignment Clothing for Women and Periwinkle Vintage Children's Clothing & Toys.
7) Visit Union Station: Speaking of Union Station...this historic train station is now a shopping mall, dining destination, movie theater complex, and more. It's also home to Amtrak's Northeast Regional trains, so it's a great place to catch a ride out of town if you're looking for a weekend getaway.
8) Explore H Street NE: H Street NE is one of the liveliest areas in Capitol Hill. There are tons of great bars and restaurants, as well as boutique shops and art galleries. Be sure to check out Union Market for some delicious food options!
9) Catch a show at the 9:30 Club: The 9:30 Club is one of D.C.'s most iconic music venues. It's hosted everyone from Nirvana to Beyonce over the years, so you never know who you might see when you go. Tickets can be tough to come by, but it's definitely worth trying to snag one!
10) Visit Ford's Theatre: Ford's Theatre is best known as the site of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, but it's also a working theatre that stages productions throughout the year. It's definitely worth checking their website to see what shows are playing while you're in town!
Whether you're a local or just visiting for a few days, there's plenty to do in Capitol Hill! From exploring its many parks and museums to indulging in its delicious food scene, there's something for everyone in this vibrant neighborhood. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start exploring!
