I’m from Cologne and your awe at the city kind of made me appreciate it more. Somehow, when you live somewhere, you start to always go the same routes to the same places and stop exploring and discovering new places the city has to offer. It’s really inspiring to see someone explore the city, not having been there before, I think that mindset of being a traveler could do me some good.

Awhhh this is so true for my hometown too!! 🦋 i LOVED Cologne (especially the cathedral!). hopefully the thought experiment of being a traveller and seeing it all for the first time will help you

@elieruck: it was already a start if people in Koeln/Cologne knew a bit more about their own city and not just talk about the Cologne Cathedral but also about the unique collection of 12 older big Romanic churches which spread as a half circle over the old inner city (kind of unique worldwide) and some other interesting aspects. In the end of the day Koeln/Cologne was found by the classic Roman Empire almost 2000 years ago (about 50AC) and was already later in the early middle age (the so called 'dark' ages which were not as dark as ppl believe) due to the Rhein River as water trade highway an important spot between Italy (which was basically part of the same Empire, at first the Frankish then the Holy Roman Empire with Germany as base) and England - apropos: almost all famous long time dynasties of Europe were/are in reality successors of some old Germanic tribe nobilities. Those tribe influences are also the reason why France got like Frankfurt or Franken/Bavaria its name from the Germanic Franks (and the Frankish Empire), England from the (Angeln tribe - Northern Germany/Netherlands which were part of the same stuff btw. - the name 'Swamp Germans' is not that far from the reality), AngloSaxons (Angeln and Sachsen/Saxon tribes), Normandy (Men of the North), Lombardy (from the Lombards = Long Beards), Burgundy (another tribe, kind of related to the Saxons) and so on ...

I'm a little jealous of you because I'm past that age now. I'm turning 60 this year. But when I was 15 - in 1980 - I traveled around Germany by train with four friends of the same age. There was a train ticket for young people that allowed them to travel all over Germany for a month for DM 180 (~90 €). Later, when I was about 21, I used the "Tramper Monats Ticket" for around 200 €, which allowed you to travel all over Europe and Morocco by train. I hope you have lots of fun and unforgettable moments in Germany!

When we had a test for the language certification they asked him how to say ring, he panicked ad said "anellen" (ring is anello in Italian), he was so mad when he found out that he just chose the wrong language to take his panic answer from😂 that's why ring is one of the few German words I still remember

Ann

heyy, if your'e reading this and planning a solo backpacking trip around Europe, please consider going with the train! There are great traintracks, such as Londen-Paris 2.15 hrs , Londen-Amsterdam 5 hrs , Londen - Frankfurt 6 hrs Ams-Paris 3hrs, Ams-Berlin 5 hrs, Par-Lyon 3.20, par-madrid 13 hrs, Par-Rome 12 hrs Etcetc. It's a bit more expensive and timebound yus, but i personally love the added value of seeing the landscapes change and overall feeling more grounded being an European citizen, and then ofcourse, the environment. Anyways, super nice video and indeed the guy looks v cute hahaha

Ring = Ring. It's one of the first videos, where I feel Hamburg was properly represented, since you weren't just going to all the touristy areas. Your German is pretty decent, but like most native English speakers you struggle with the 'ch', which you turn into 'sch'. It's more akin to the hiss of a cat, rather than the sh in shoe.

Omg I feel that exhaustion of listening to other people at dinner. So I went abroad to volunteer as a teacher so the first few month I didn’t really thought I’d learn their language but a week ago I took my first italki class and suddenly I started to understand a few words and sentences (basic basic) but considering that it’s a tonal language with a different alphabet, I am still over the moon when I understand anything. Now I really wanna put my mind into it and take lessons every week to hopefully reach A2 by the end of they year. When I was 16 I went abroad to learn French and I still remember how exhausted I was literally every day. I took me 5-6 month to reach a level to understand pretty much everything (despite science classes but that might has nothing to do with French 😂)

Hi Jade! You're sharing such great values and good vibes in here and I am so grateful for that 💚 However, I am struggling with the way you romanticise this lifestyle of traveling everywhere in a fast way, by plane, which is super super bad for the environment... I understand the urge to travel and the curiosity about other cultures, but considering the current climate situation, we should stop flying for "tourist/visiting" reasons (one of the most important action we can do as individuals, much more impactful than going zero waste for exemple), and appreciate slow travelling (which I am sure you would love, because it connects us even more with our surroundings and the locals!). I am sending you this with no will to criticize in a mean way but to raise awareness to you and your community, love to all :)

Jade! If I can offer some (non preachy, I hope) words of wisdom about talking to native speakers when you're not yet fluent: people want to alleviate stress or discomfort so they will switch to English if they sense those things. (Yes, you may also run into irritated people who are so over language students and don't give a shit. I'm not talking about them here.) Here are some ways you can project enough confidence to keep people in your target language: 1. don't correct every mistake, 2. try to avoid long pauses where you word search or work out sentences - instead, use simple grammar and simple sentences/words so you can speak at a normal pace (pace is so important), 3. Resist using a questioning inflection where you're unsure. This can be really hard and requires a lot of practice! So no beating yourself up if you catch yourself hesitating and questioning. Also, accent goes a loooong way in convincing people you can manage in the language. I'm not a German speaker but it sounds to me like you're already doing a good job there! source: me, I live in a second language that I learned after I moved to my current country.

Dear Jade I'm struggling so much to understand how you can at the same time say that you care about the environment and climate change... and taking an airplan from London to Hamburg which you can reach by bus or train within one day. :'( All this while hyping the experience of airports and air travelling. It makes me so sad. You have such a power as a role model of sustainable travelling. Can you explain me please? Currently I feel so lonely and lost with my concerns for the environment... Seeing you contributing to it is so hard for me. As I see you as an inspiration for myself and many others.
