I lived on Kalaheo Ave in Kailua 50 steps from the beach....it was small but I loved it. It was the perfect introvert location for me because my life was at my house and the beach. If I worked from home it would be great but working an office job sucks because hawaii commuting sucks.

Tips from a Native Hawaiian girl: Before you come here please take the time to do research about our culture and our history. For us living here is not a “vacation lifestyle” as you people call it. It’s a fight to keep our culture alive, and to keep our land for our people. You can have a college education and a great paying job, but we still can’t afford to own our own land because outsiders keep coming here and buying us out. That’s why a lot of locals don’t like outsiders.
@LizzKillian
@LizzKillian 4 жыл бұрын
That really sucks. I'm seeing more outsiders coming in to other states even and making it where people can't afford to buy a house in the state they were born in.
@nakamurakmm

There’s a lot of bitterness because we were an independent Kingdom. But American business men overthrew our kingdom and established their own government, then we were illegally annexed to the US in 1898, and when our Queen tried to fight for our people she was imprisoned in her palace. Our people weren’t allowed to speak our native language our do any cultural practices. But the colonizers turned around and marketed it for tourism to make money off of it. Hula is sacred to us, and a way to tell a story through dance . But it’s just a random dance that people try to mimic at their “Hawaiian luaus”. They don’t even know what a luau is. The military has taken over a lot of the land. And they have done bomb testing, which ruins the land. Look up the island of Kaho’olawe and see what they did to it. And that’s not the only island they’ve ruined. That’s why my people are still very bitter.
@Katarzyna1886
@Katarzyna1886 4 жыл бұрын
It's not just the mainlanders moving to the islands but also plenty locals in Hawaii benefiting from being US citizens and moving to the mainland. If you feel rightful to say 'we want to keep our land for our people' then try to forbid Hawaiians to move to the US. I wonder how much they would like that..
@nakamurakmm
@nakamurakmm 4 жыл бұрын
Who said anything about forbidding anyone to leave? The goal of my comment was to educate people. Literally started it off with “ Tips from a Native Hawaiian girl...” People can leave if they want. But I’m speaking of the fact that my people are being forced out. Most of us want to stay here. It’s our home. We have a deep connection to the land and the ocean, and there’s no place else like Hawaii in the US. Moving to Florida or California would be nothing like living here. Our people, way of life, and culture are so different. And I also gave reasons why a lot of locals don’t like outsiders. Even someone else commented before I did. He said “remember the locals don’t like you”. And it’s because we our people are struggling to be able to afford anything. I grew in Waimanalo and Kailua (where these people were able to buy a house). And I am happy for them that they can afford to own this house, and it’s beautiful how she decorated it, and I appreciate that they respect Hawaii. The truth is that a lot of people who grew up in Kailua can’t afford to buy a house there. Within the last 15 years it has completely changed, they’ve turned it into a mini Waikiki. The traffic is terrible. Our beaches are so over crowded and our water isn’t as clean as it used to be. Yes things change, but it’s had negative effects. Now our people do appreciate the outsiders who come here and are respectful and responsible. And we especially appreciate when people make an effort to learn our history. And yes we do have many benefits being part of the US, but the way things happened weren’t right. You can at least acknowledge that. And although it’s in the past its not something we can just forget about. It’s a huge part of our history. It’s the reason why our culture and language was near death at some point, and our people were going extinct because of the diseases that were brought here. I assume that people who grow up and go to school in the mainland aren’t taught the history of Hawaii, which is kinda funny because we are the 50th state, so we are part of America. So although yes it’s a great place to vacation, I want to educate people about our history, and our culture which is very sacred to us. So when they come here they have a deeper appreciation for it, and take it seriously. And they can understand our people here and how we have to live.
@Katarzyna1886
@Katarzyna1886 4 жыл бұрын
@@nakamurakmm Of course you didn’t mention forbidding locals to move to the mainland. Why would you? It’s your RIGHT. Just as it's other Americans right to move to Hawaii. I know plenty of locals who move to the mainland for better job opportunities or simply because they seek different lifestyles. I'm guessing they would not like to have that option taken away from them but at the same time are upset about other Americans moving here..? Kind of ironic.. All I can say that in 12 years of living in Hawaii I was always welcomed with nothing but aloha. Educating about history is very important. However, I took your comments as mostly being focused on 'why we locals do not like you outsiders'. Lastly, skyrocketing prices of real estate are not happening just in Hawaii. All desirable locations, whether it's London, California, Paris or NYC are very expensive. I guess it's one of the charms of living in a crowded XXI century.

This video reeks of privilege and it’s annoying how you enforce stereotypes of local people and I can tell you haven’t taken the time to learn about Hawai’i, their people or culture. It sounds like you also have very little knowledge of the struggles that everyday people have to deal with. It’s fine that you want to live in Hawai’i but learn and listen or you will never belong to our community. Also you’re in Kailua and it’s like 99% white... It doesn’t really count.

I went to Hawaii for a vacation two years ago, I talked to people who have lived there their whole lives and people who moved there. All said it's very expensive. All had 2 or 3 jobs to survive. Native people are worried that it will be an island of the very rich and very poor like Caribbean Islands. Not an easy place to live

I vacationed in Hawaii a year ago and I also spoke with the natives and the same story was told. I specifically remember our waitress worked 3 jobs and was a young single mom. She said you can’t make it without working multiple jobs and having family support. The islands are beautiful but what seems like paradise to mainlanders is just the everyday economic struggle for them.

My question for you is this: I would love to move to Hawaii, and my career is being a Financial Literacy High School teacher. I would like to know how much you spend each month on living expenses? If you not comfortable sharing how much you spend each month, I understand, but if you can share any insight on that matter I would greatly appreciate it! Keep grinding on the channel content and have an awesome day! Mahalo!

From the perspective of haole that lived in Hawai'i for 4.5 years but after 6 months knew I wouldn't live there forever: So many things wrong with this. These are the kind of haoles that make the haoles like me (the ones who learn and educate themselves and are respectful of the culture and care about the community they have put themselves into) look bad. "Why wouldn't we move to Hawai'i?" How about because you're aiding the forced displacement of Kānaka Maoli and participating in the exploitation of Native lands. If you're gonna live here, at least shop locally at Foodland and KTA. You already have one house on Hawai'i and now you feel entitled to buy more land? Sounds about white. "Beach chic"? And stop encouraging people to move to Hawai'i. You're not helping.
@Sliceofhaupia

And we wish more like you would replace the ignorant. You seem to be Hawaiian at heart. In reality the things natives and locals really dislike is just the disrespect, lack of awareness and missing ALOHA mentality that foreigners bring with them when moving here.

Why not take a stroll with me through any of our Section 8 public housings and l'll show you what "island lifestyle" is. What do you know of Mayor Rights, Kam IV, Pupu 'ole , Pupukahi , etc. It'll change what you think. Btw...I'm not at all offended by this video. You only know what you know. Would appreciate more of your insight and feedback as I train as well hope you consider reaching out more to your viewers it's very generous. What are your favorite workouts to do at home? I agree with what you told me before in that it is somewhat limited but my favorites are basic Bicep curls and Dips. Thanks for understanding by the way if you competed what color would you want to wear? I'll ask again next time if you miss this all the best hope you're doing well. I've asked you this in previous videos and on instagram but I really feel like you don't care about whats going on. I'm not sure if you just don't care about creating a diverse group of viewers or that it's just the white privilege that you are a little too comfortable with but I unfortunately won't be watching your videos anymore.
