It is though. The four seasons in one day is kind of an exaggeration. Weather pattern in melbourne always depends on the direction and location of the high pressure and the low pressure systems. Every rain shower is ALWAYS followed by sunshine, and then another burst and then either clear skies. It's "unpredictable" because the weather moves quickly due to the geography where there's not a lot of mountain ranges around to block/slow the weather down. Winters are very sunny in Melbourne too and it very rarely rains compared to what I have seen in other places.

Good point: it’s wasnt exactly predictable! I remember some random rain. I meant more along the lines of the seasons being pretty consistent year by year. I could be wrong though. London can be a bit random over longer periods. Also it’s just overcast all the time here which just sucks. I saw blue skies even in winter in Melbourne. You’re right though, all subjective!

It's interesting you mentioned Melbourne's weather being much more predictable. There goes a common saying that you often see all 4 seasons in a single day and although I'm not from Melbourne (regional VIC) I have experienced this when I'm there. But when you strike that nice vein of weather, it is perfect with blue skies and the smell of the ocean drifting in through the streets.

with regards to culture and the arts i find london is way superior compared to melbourne. the vibe in london is electrifying. there's something great living in london that can't be described despite the factors that you mentioned which i agree. in the end, you will stay or move depending on what suits you.

I ran a gallery on the south bank in London, with walking distance to the Hayward, the national gallery and Tate Modern, lots of institutions including Tate Britain and private galleries like Satchii. I new an older female Artist who lived in Perth WA who said she found it easier to make a comfort living there. Also I missed the Melbourne private gallery industry/ culture (flinders lane,Richmond-sth Yarra) which London doesn’t have, and Sydney doesn’t do as well , seems a lot of Artists I know find their way to Berlin or New York and for example Paris doesn’t do private galleries either, I felt the space is taken up by antiques, another difference I found although it may be changing in london with new buildings going up with more foyer space, is the amount of art in buildings with commissioned works at street level, one of the joys I find walking around Sydney.

An interesting comparison for a Melburnian like myself. It surely does take time to fly overseas from Melbourne. Of course not many Australians are travelling or permitted to travel overseas at present. Flight times shown for travel to Queensland, and Port Moresby are rather pessimistic. You can fly north to Cairns, which is as far north in Queensland most people fly, in 3 hours 20 minutes. Flying overseas a better comparison would be Singapore which takes 7 hours 25 minutes to 7 hours 55 minutes, depending on the direction. Australia is a large continent with long distances but Australians are used to flying domestically, and overseas.

Thanks, that was a really interesting & fair comparison. Just for anyone reading, flying from Melbourne to Brisbane (the capital of Queensland) takes about 2 hours. From Melbourne to Cairns, which is further north, takes about 3 and a half hours.

Australia is a very diverse county in terms of scenery... there's deserts, the outback with rivers and cayons, rainforests, tropical islands, glorious beaches, the great barrier reef, snowy mountains, coastal hinterlands, the Bush with wet and dry creek beds. Particularly in these times when we aren't able to travel overseas, I love living in a country where a complete scenery change is only a couple of hours away.

Yeh, trams can be perhaps a bit of guess at times but during peak hours they (usually) run every 6 or every 10 minutes on the main tram routes. Melbourne is also building a cross city below ground (tunnel under the cbd) & above ground rail line (bit like London's Crossrail), which will enable peak hour train services to increase to every few minutes.

You currently have city loop trains every few minutes. And the busier lines do get trains every 4-7 minutes during peak hours. The issues are that there is too much shared track so any delay anywhere causes the whole system to be slowed down (which this should solve), and that you waste time because the loop only goes in one direction (which it didn't sound like they were looking to fix, and given that the new stations are intended to disconnect certain lines this will likely force you to swap trains more frequently, slowing you down). As for the expectation of more service to your line, I doubt that will happen since they haven't currently extended the duration of peak hour services. I think it's more of a future proofing idea intended to service more customers once lines are extended, not to better service existing customers.

Tram stop signs on my route (a major one) have "every 6 minutes" for between 5 & 6pm, and "every 10 minutes" Re trains, do you mean one/each line in the loop goes in one direction, at same times, & isn't bi-directional for same line at same time? - since nearly all lines, except for Mernda/Hursbridge lines change direction around 1pm through the loop. By "increase to every few minutes" for the city loop i meant more reliably frequently, since a delay on one line can have too much knock on effect to other lines

Hey mate - coming a bit late to this video, but on the whole I thought your views on the categories were fair - the two you gave to the UK made perfect sense from a family and geographic perspective. As someone who lives about two hours east of Melbourne, I like to visit occasionally and there are good experiences to be had - but I'm usually glad to get back to life in the country, where traffic is when you get held up at an intersection by more than five cars :)

My wife and I along with our four young children emigrated from South London to Melbourne in 1970. We love Australia and have travelled all the way around this great country staying mostly on FREE camping sites. The benefits of living here are fantastic, too many to mention them all but Free parking just about everywhere except in the cities even at the beaches most are free parking and in some places you can actually drive your car onto the beach also there are parks with free BBQs everywhere and free clean public toilets...We have made many trips back to the UK to spend time with family but we would never ever go back to live in the UK especially as it is nothing like it was when we left in 1970, and it has not changed for the better, London in particular we found to be very dirty with smelly rubbish everywhere and plenty of foxes in the City definitely not a healthy place to live these days.

@@kushsharma3798 What about the spiders, every country has spiders even the UK, even though Australia has a lot of different species of spiders there are only a few that are venomous and they are not a problem as they shy away from humans. No one has died from a spider or snake bite in Australia since 1980 which cannot be said about sharks and crocs as people are maimed and killed by them every year even though it is easy to stay away from those dangerous areas as they are well sign posted. We have found that Australia is not a dangerous place to live as many people imagine it to be. I have to admit that flies are the biggest nuisance especially when having a BBQ outdoors but you do get used to it somewhat.

I moved from London to Melbourne in 2017 after Brexit as could see the UK was self destructing. Furthermore, after 12 years living in London I wanted to experience living in a warmer climate. After having kids in Melbourne after the pandemic we returned to live in England and we lasted 10 months. It was a real shock to the system to come home and live full time in the UK. Rents are through the roof, house are small, bills are very expensive, nurseries and childcare are very poor, lack of support from the government with childcare costs, people are fairly negative overall due to lifes challenges, the winters are 6-7 months long and your energy levels become depleted by Jan post christmas. Furthermore, the government is incompetent and for 25 years has made short term decisions. Since the global financial crisis the income gap has widened and you can see the slow erosion of the middle classes due to the wealth distribution. Don't get me wrong I love the UK and its my home, but I would'nt want to only have citizenship for this county and came back to Australia to give me kids a better future.

Probably a big reason London is less friendly is that it attracts a large portion of the UK's (and Europe's) ambitious professionals, people who basically are too busy for their own good at times and don't really develop a supportive culture. Friendly chit chat is more common eleswhere in the UK, but I don't think the passive aggressiveness is absent anywhere in this country. I live in Nottingham and people here can be very macho, directly aggressive at times, and a strong "cold shoulder" vibe. But also people can be really chatty which is quite different from London.

I studied and lived in Surrey / London for 6 years, and now have been living in Melbourne for a year. Very relatable to the points you mentioned, I must say the food in Melbourne is much better than in London, and of course, the coffee… However one thing I kinda miss about London is that you can have a quick lunch by going into a coffee shop like Pret/Costa/Greggs etc which is almost around every corner, here in Melbourne I find it a little bit harder, and less choices of sandwiches lol. I know the weather in Melbourne is not the best compare to Gold Coast for example, but still a bit better than London - as you said more frequent blue sky. Generally I prefer living in Melbourne, but have to say London is a great city with its culture and the historical sense. Like both places.

Many places including rentals, air B&Bs, homes, in Melbourne do have central heating. In places built in last 3 decades it would be a higher percentage of places with it, than without. Older homes & flats of course may just have a wall heater or portable electric heater. Good vlog

I lived in Dorset and in London and the Mdlands growing up. I've lived in Oz for over 30 years, I've spotted as many Adders in England as I have red belllied blacks, Tigers, Brown and carpet pythons in Aus. Plenty of wildlife in the UK, just not big like Australia's that's all.

@@moonmc1047 so did I, london has more options with frequent trains and buses but in many parts of melbourne you're forced to use a car. the train network only goes from suburbs into the city so if you want to go from suburb to suburb you're kinda forced to use a car, as buses can be every hour and not even run on weekends. cycling infrastructure has also been improving in recent years in both cities, london especially. making it harder to drive is a good thing, we must discourage car use

You only mentioned flying. What about train trips, day trips or road trips? Melbourne is near the centre of Victoria. There are nearby snowfields, historic gold mining towns, the world famous Great Ocean Road, Yarra Valley wineries, Murray River paddle boats, Wilson's Prom ecta.

From the video, I like the housing layout, and the Cycling routes in Melbourne. England is too crowded, and roads are getting so dangerous the way cyclists have to share the road with cars doing 30-50mph in some places. Cyclists could ride on pathways in fields adjacent to the roads.

This is really good! I'm a Melbournian that's lived in North London, South London and now on the border of Kent & London, been here 7 years and married to a North Londoner born & bred! I totally agree with the Melbourne weather thing compared to London.... November all the way to start of March is a massive struggle weather and daylight wise. Personally I'd see Melbourne as a great settle down with the family there (also working with children , much prefer the Australian system to UK). But as a 24 year old when I first moved London/Europe was a complete wonderland! If we ever go back to Melbourne to live, I would miss spoons 😂

Haha good point, I don’t think I saw an Australian equivalent to Spoons! Thanks for your feedback on the video. I tried to be fair in comparing the two, lots of Melbournians have not been impressed with saying the weather is ‘more reliable’ there but i meant seasons in general 😅

@@corbinsofftheradar3085 To be fair a lot of Australians can be quite closed minded and refuse the believe anywhere could be better than where they're from. Largely down to being so isolated! My dad came over for our wedding and was shocked at how much there actually was to do in London then said he wished he'd stayed longer (after we had to force him for 2.5 weeks as it was 😂)

@@corbinsofftheradar3085 Pre covid, every 2-3 years. Was tough when family members pass away etc and you miss goodbye, but have to make your time there count. It gets exhausting though as everyone wants a piece of you & you just want to relax 😂 We've got a baby on the way, so I guess when we're allowed it might be a little more constant visits.

Sounds like a fair comparison. Another way of looking at it: Australia is great if you love nature while the UK rules for the culture buffs. To be brutally honest though, a lot of "culture" is online these days so it probably doesn't matter much where you are.

I actually think melbourne had a lot more culture than London in some ways. London is all chains whereas Melbourne was full of independent shops. I think your comparison is mostly fair though. Thanks for watching!

@@Andrew-df1dr That's only partially true. The best universities in the world are generally found in America and the UK. Though Aus has a slightly higher overall life expectancy, the five year survival rates for many types of cancer for example, are higher in the US than anywhere else in the world. The US also consistently ranks many hospitals in the top 100 in the world. I do however, agree with you on the social security systems.

i don't agree with the transportation verdict. i think cycling and car as a main transportation is useless in London. for that the tube and trains will cover pretty much every transportation aspect including bus.

Great video, pretty spot on, except that he gave the social life category to London based on the fact his friends and family are there, which is not a fair and unbiased view at all. He said Melbourne is 'generally friendlier' and it has the same sort of activities as London. And, sports clubs/bars are also a common thing here with the AFL, soccer (football), the tennis, cricket, even the UFC regularly shown on the TV's. Melbourne also has regular running clubs on Saturday mornings with Park Run and Hash House Harriers running clubs on weeknights. Not to mention many workplaces and universities (colleges) have their own running and sports clubs. Also, I wouldn't really consider this a 'detailed comparision', more so a brief summary as there were only 6 points quickly spoken about. So technically the score should be Melbourne-5, London-1. Have to say though, London definitely wins the location category though which many Melbournians would be envious of. Thanks for the video!

Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world and london has many top flight teams,it's a different more exciting atmosphere,London has also had some of the biggest boxing events in the world,Wimbledon for the tennis,don't see how you can give Melbourne sports.

I think overcast is the worst thing about London.. even Melbourne has a little too much overcast for my liking... I think for history, culture, clubs, dinning and architecture London is going to exceed Melbourne but for other reasons Melbourne is probably the better place to live...
