20:35 Wisconsin is one of the best places in the country for cross country skiing. There’s a big community and many events around that’s activity/sport here, even in Milwaukee. There’s also still hiking/snow shoeing. For anyone who runs cold, insulated pants make a huge difference.

Milwaukee is great! Great city. Weather isn't too bad. I wish summer was longer and winter was shorter, but all the ethnic festivals and parties. Summerfest, State fair, great restaurants and shows. Sports. It's all you need. Chicago is only 1.5 hr. Drive so. 😎🤷‍♂️ I love it, it's perfect.

Winter here is not what it used to be, I should make a new video. We did not have snow until January and outside of the one yet stream event we have been in the 40s. Green Bay is getting more snow that we do, thats about 2 hours north, but it makes a differnce. I start to wonder what the summer will be like this year in the south..

Great breakdown of life in the Milwaukee winter, Marcus. Mindset is important for winters here. You cover it all here - buy warm gear, invest in a snowblower if you can (you got a great deal on the one in your vid!), find something enjoyable to do indoors or outdoors in the winter. Taking a beach vacation in mid-late February to recharge helps a lot too 👍 😃

Check attic insulation when touring a home. I made this mistake and it led to ice damming, i found, in my poorly insulation attic Blown in insulation is a $2500-3000 expense. Had i known this, i would have working it into the buying price.
@MarcusMKE
@MarcusMKE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jimmy - it's easy to overlook, especially if it's just a scuttle hole in a closet you can't without a ladder. But even then, it should come up at the home inspection! Also what was considered enough in the 1960's is not what we like to see today! Adding blow in insulation to the attic is probably the quickest way to make your home feel more compfy and cut down on heating expenses. Also very important re ice damming - make sure your attic has enough ventilation so it can stay cold up there. Best is a good amount of soffit vents and the either a ridge vent or mushroom vents up on top. Sometimes the insulation guys just fill everything up and it blocks the soffit vents, then you are back at ice dams..

It is for this reason that when I move up there I will be looking out for apartments that have some kind of covered parking. Ha. Do you also help in searching for apartments? The reason I'm asking is that I am currently working for a company as a contractor remotely, but at the beginning of the year if they extend a job offer, I will either be moving to their Waukesha office or their Tampa, FL office. I've heard that apartment hunters can frequently get good discounts when moving in less popular seasons such as Winter. Is that your experience in Milwaukee?
@MarcusMKE
@MarcusMKE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad, a garage is definitely a good idea. A lot of condos have heated indoor parking, which ensures that your car is warm and dry every morning and you don't have to shovel. I would not hold my breath with a discount during the winter months, getting a nice apartment can be competitive (We also own nice rental properties, so I see that side of the market)! A lot of relocation clients abandon that idea and just take an Airbnb to get started and relatively quickly buy a place - with a little guidance not that difficult and in the end less money per month. In Milwaukee agents normally don't get involved in leasing, but you can definitely pick my brain if you want!

Great video, thank you! We're thinking of moving to WI from Southern California. My husband is an electrician and is really concerned about the cold Winter weather. How do electricians handle the Winter weather safely? Does construction stop when it hits a certain temperature for safety reasons? Thanks so much!
@MarcusMKE
@MarcusMKE 2 жыл бұрын
Most people are before they move here and from working with many I can tell you they expect way more snow than we actually have, but they are also surprised how long the cool season lasts into spring. Electricians work mostly inside, outside construction is usually not an issue until about 30F, you see some contractors move jobs around when we have a week in the teens to avoid working outside all day, but some just do because you get used to. I have built a home with my crew a few years ago, we broke ground late December, put the basement in in January, framed it up in January and by February we had the roof on - most of the days were not too bad. It is also surprising how even my wife gets used to the cold every year, in November she will complain she is freezing if it's 40 and in February she'll be outside get mail with no jacket because it is 40 :-)

I'm born in Milwaukee. But have lived in California in the 1960's and again in 2000 -2004. I would compare Milwaukee winter to that of Mammoth Lakes California. Everyday has Fall thru spring will experience morning dew. If frozen, car will be covered in ice every morning. If it snows in January it will not melt until March/April. There will be large snow banks just like Mammoth lakes. Some winters are worse than others. Some water there will be minimal snow all winter long.

Hi! how do you "know" where the road is when driving on a minor road? I was driving from Dousman to Oconomowoc, it was snowing and suddenly I lost the road. Everything, not only the road, was covered with snow. I will relocate to Wisconsin this Summer and that is my biggest concern. Please comment about that. Thank you.

Hi Juan, practice makes perfect! If you have never driven on snow before I understand that may feel scary! You should go practice a bit on a big open parking lot. Accelerate, break, turn at low speed, get a feel for how much grip you have. Do that when you have time and you are not in a rush to get somewhere. On small roads you can usually still see where the ditch is, but if you are not sure just slow down to be safe, or follow another car. I actually love driving on snow, I think it's fun, but I also grew up in the Alps. Leave early, slow down and keep it safe. If you are generally a decent driver you'll have it figured out quickly.

It helps to pay attention! When the weather is better or warmer, note your surroundings when driving! In the winter I frequently had to dive from Brookfield to Oconomowoc early in the morning! Frequently I was on the road before the plows! Knowing exactly where the road lay was helpful! I also drove a 4wheel drive vehicle and used that feature when necessary! Never had a problem! Always remember, SLOW DOWN !

@@MarcusMKE lifelong Milwaukee resident here. Winter isn't that bad. Just long and drawn out. We haven't had a snowstorm with more than six inches in like 10 years. When I was a kid in the '80's, we used to have snowstorms of a foot plus several times a winter. Not a global warming advocate, but it isn't like it used to be. I'd rather have a serious winter than just dreary snow, rain and ice from November through March. Minneapolis still gets what I remember 30 years ago though. Can't beat summers in Milwaukee though. Probably the best on the planet.

Why is drinking the primary sport in Milwaukee? Just wait till you've been through your first Winter. Let me say this, if you don't own any piece of Wool clothing, you need it, to live in Milwaukee. Since you lived there for 48 years, how long is the winter season from the beginning of winter to when the snow melts for good? How many heavy snow days in the winter do you guys get? Also, if a heavy snow day occurs, how fast will the city have the streets cleared? I'm asking because I'm from Arkansas.
@MarcusMKE
@MarcusMKE 2 жыл бұрын
@@slickwilly6868 winters are not what they used to be. I had to clear my drive way only 6 times last winter. Today is Jan 6th 2023 and we had snow once, about four inches, a few days later we were in the 50s and it's all gone. I am sure we will have some more snow in the next two months, but most of the days are just cool/cold and dry. If it does snow heavy, the roads are usually cleared within hours. PWD has a massive fleet of snow removal equipment. The roads get salted or treated with salt brine before a snow fall, so the snow melts the second it falls on the road. I have seen what happens when it snows 1 inch in the south - everything stops, because there is no snow removal equipment. When we have a bad winter storm, people will work from home, come to work later, usually no problem, everyone understands. Winter is long, and even when you think it's over and getting nice in April, you still have to be prepared for a cold front to come through again. Flipside, the warm half of the year is really pleasant compared to the South.
