After living in Perth for two years and Sydney for 18 months, I thought I'd do a comparison of the two with the positives and negatives! SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE EXPAT CONTENT!
My blog post: www.thesayhelloedit.com/livin...
Note: I am slightly biased towards Perth as I've travelled there every year to visit family/friends since the age of 7 as well as living there for two years. Soz.
Basically, Perth is great for families and is super laid back and chilled with amaze beaches and food. Sydney is great for young adults who love bars and beaches and a city with lots going on.

As a Perth citizen myself, I absolutely loved your video! I don't know why the eastern states (and the rest of the world, mind you...) hate us so much, Perth is honestly one of the most underrated cities out there, their loss though.

Wow! I'm from Victoria and I've never heard any Perth or WA hatred. I tried to look for work there too but was told outright that they wouldn't consider anyone from the eastern states, regardless of how well qualified, unless they already live there, so perhaps it's not all one way.

Im from the east coast and I only just recently visited Perth for the first time. It astounded me how great it is over there. I was so ignorant about how good they have it. I loved it that much that I am moving there in 2022 and will settle down there! I feel everyone is aggressive and obsessed with status on the east coast. Everyone on the west coast is way nicer and just wants to have a good time.

I came to perth 30 years ago as a student (coming from KK & KL Msia), & i fell in love with its bluest n vast blue sky, the smell of wood & absolutely unique landscape ive never seen before coming from.Borneo. Kota Kinabalu for me is like a mini perth. We have beautiful blue sky fine white sandy beach, lots of outdoor & fresh seafood n fresh produce! Ive been to sydney only for 2 nights (unfair to judge a city), but its enough for me to run away from it. Its another city of Kuala Lumpur! Mind you i live in KL for 30 overs & yeah work opportunity is great but certainly its about rat race there. Now we took our family back to perth & i love it still. I would say Cottesloe, Fremantle, and Scarborough are the best beach places for single people. Fremantle if you want more of a big town vibe on the beach with great transport options, Cottesloe for more of a backpacker/small town vibe on the beach (and it's good for the train), and Scarborough for more of a local surfing vibe with cool bars and shops (but there's no train to Scarborough so it's bus only or you'll need a car)! Scarborough and Fremantle are both reasonably cheap, but Cottesloe can be pricey as it's a fancier suburb.

I was there with my wife and the little daughter and we where started at. We are a mixed copple black and white. It was a strage experience because in Amsterdam people dont pay attention to that. Perth and surroundings are beautiful but i found it a quait dull place. Its more like a expanded villidge. For me i like buzzy vibrant cities with lots goig on so i liked Sydney more. There are definitely things you can do in Perth you can't do in Sydney. Like get somewhere 10 suburbs away without it being a coordinated mission, be on a beach that feels pristine and uncrowded, get the train to the footy hassle free in a beautiful new stadium. Cleaner air under bluer skies. Kings Park and Rottnest Island Sydney equivalents? Sydney overall is obviously dirtier, older infrastructure, more humid and doesn't feel any less souless than Perth city itself. No toll roads in WA. In Perth you can go to outdoor places and feel like you're in your own little area to yourself, in Sydney you're sharing it. Was in Bondi earlier this year. Whereis in Cottesloe they'll have a van set up doing free skin/mole checks, in Bondi they had a fυcking body contouring surgery marquee set up. Complete with a model with line markings over her body being sculpted/performed on. It was a novelty to see it but also a wtf is going on moment. I should've drawn a jokey comparison to Scultpures by the Sea but incidently Bondi shares that with Cottesloe too. You could just take it as part of a lot more going on everywhere too which can be taken as a pro or con depending what you like. Maybe Perth is more what Sydney used to be like in a lot of respects. You don't just easily drive to the beach for a swim and drive home again like in Perth.You're paying a lot to park, you're looking for a spot to put your towel down anywhere near the water that isn't packed with people and you're crawling in hideous traffic in both directions. Again, that's if you want to drive and want to go to the beach so might not be an issue. Overall Sydney has a more dog eat dog and a more impatient, impersonal, more vanity, superficial culture. I think Perth is more "down to earth" and modest even though it kills Sydney in many respects. Love visiting Sydney for a holiday but i always notice the things I've mentioned and nothing there makes it any more appealing than Perth in terms of what day to day life must be like. It's probably unfair to compare the two places much beyond the basic day to day living experience. Pro's and con's galore. Sydney has the advantage and disadvantage of an extra 3m+ people so it's always going to have dramatic differences.

I'm from Perth but have been to Sydney several times, Melbourne too. West Australian's by enlarge are very in tune with their wild life because it's all around you. You can set the seasonal changes on how the wildlife behaves, I never found that in the east coast unless we stayed in the bush towns which I really enjoyed. I think another thing is Perth is not really a tourist city so it's not particularly set up for tourists so near all the attractions are set up for the locals which are overwhelmingly used by families. I also found men in Sydney and more so in Melbourne to be very feminin if that's a fair thing to ssy. Men in Perth I guess because of mining, fishing, farming and construction industries are better built more out doorsy and more masculine but without the bravado, more like polite gentlemen but tough as nails and very very family orientated. Sydney harbour is beautiful as is country Victoria, love the snow fields, think I've had a go at just about every one of them. There's good and not so good in every city, it just comes down to what you like and the lifestyle you live.

A few contradictions here i.e. that Perth beaches are more like Florida and Sydney is more Mediterranean... when Perth actually has a Mediterranean climate, with beaches that resemble the best beaches in Italy, Greece & Turkey (Med). Whereas Sydney is more sub-tropical, like Florida, with beaches similar to those found in northern Florida and the Carolinas. I wouldn't call Sydney 'Mediterranean' at all. So she got it completely the other way around...
@SayHelloExpatAdvice
@SayHelloExpatAdvice 5 жыл бұрын
I really disagree, I find Perth's beaches very Floridian and not at all like the beaches in the Med! They may have different climates, but Sydney's coastline is very similar to the Mediterranean coastline where it's very cliff-y rather than dune-y! So no, I didn't get it the other way around - just my views on them after years of visiting Florida and The Med and my comparison between Perth & Sydney! The beaches and coastline have nothing to do with the types of climate (agree with you on the climate obvs)!

@ephemeralinspiration1218 4 жыл бұрын
@@SayHelloExpatAdvice It's not "cliff-y" - it's just got sandstone rock breaking up the little cove-type beaches. There aren't many natural coastlines left in Sydney because it's been so developed. There are dunes still around Maroubra etc and further down the coast.

Lol yeah but you can go up and down the coast in NSW (and WA) and get to quieter, more natural beaches. You just travel south an hour and you get to Illawarra beaches...or north, but better 3 hrs either direction from Sydney to get to really nice beaches with soft white sand, natural foreshore etc. Every time I've lived in Sydney I'd never go to Bondi/Bronte/Coogee - they're way too packed and overdeveloped.

Sydney clubs close at 2 am? I lived there for a few months in 2008 and I remember partying till 5 or 6 am. Although I think most of them were gay clubs just because they always had a great party going on :D How are the pubs in Perth though? Now as I'm older, I have close to zero interest in night clubs but would much rather sit in a pub and talk with my friends. Rock music in the background is always a plus.

Things have changed a lot in Sydney since 2008! A thing called Lockout Laws has come in, and as such the majority of the Kings Cross area has completely closed down. Live music venues, bars, and clubs have gone under because of Sydney's ridiculous nanny state, and now the only Central Sydney clubs that stay open until 5/6am are the two gay clubs: Stonewall and Arq on Oxford Street.

Got bored of Perth nightlife and moved to Melbourne to party, said I would never return to Perth, but after 5 years and now got kids I'm moving back to 'boring' Perth, but I'm boring now and like it, I can't wait its such a better city for family life, better weather, not so much traffic, more chilled out, I will actually visit the city rather than avoid it, much better beaches 10 mins from Currambine so i will go beach weekly instead of once a year living in Greensborough Melbs, plus its got 2 British chippys where I'm going to live so I'm sold. Perth is how I expected Australia to be, Melbourne is more like Europe/UK all crammed up and I dont take advantage of Melbs because too big. In 1 day in Perth i could go CBD in morning then Scarbs beach for few hrs, then Joondalup golf course, then Northbridge at Night. Would take 2 days to do that in Melbourne

I've lived in Sydney & Perth, I personally prefer Sydney. I was absolutely shocked by the customer service in Perth, it took me over a year to stop mentally listing all of the things my old boss would've fired them for. I also found Perth people very hard to read like their personality was like the stepford wives movie & I found myself thinking wtf are they on?. Jobs in Perth are non existent & employers are very demanding of applicants, which doesn't make any sense given the display of customer service I've seen/experience there. I often felt like I should've said socialising with colleagues takes a higher priority than the customers at interviews. Perth is better suited to families & retirees, it's not a place you go too for a career.

To your point about Perth people being odd. I met a lady on a tram in Melbourne. I was a bit lost so she picked up I was not from Melbourne. She asked I said Perth. She went in to this rant about what a backward shithole Perth was. Taken back a bit I asked her what she hated the most and she replied the shopping " You don't have any decent bloody shops" she said. I asked her what type of shops and she replied " cloth shops you don't have anything". I smiled and said " my dear Perth Women don't really do their shopping for clothes in Perth, they fly up to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have them tailer made whilst having a holiday. I went on to say " the ey could fly to Melbourne but with accommodation it is way to expensive besides Sydney and Melbourne are so very isolated from the world and too far away from anywhere else. I do believe the insides of her cheeks were cutting on her teeth, loved it. After a week of being told Perth is too far away to matter I took great delight in her puckered reaction. But it's true, why would you spend $2000 on a swag of cloths when you can do exactly as I have said. My brother spend 5 days in Singapore having his curtains made, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

having a beach (almost) to yourself is the best. Although having said that, more popular Perth beaches (Cottesloe and Scarborough) are usually busier than that in the middle of summer. Not as busy as the Sydney beach, but certainly busier than in the photograph. Other suburban beaches further north or south might well be like in the photo :) I love it, you don't have to worry about your belongings getting stolen when you leave them on the sand and go for a swim, there's plenty of room for volleyball, cricket or frisbee, and the cops don't usually bother patrolling quiet beaches so you can bring a picnic and booze and drink to your heart's content (it's illegal to drink on Perth beaches). It's ace :)

as a Perth local, there's many different ways of living with university. You can actually live in university dorms, or rent places nearby. There's a site called Gumtree which has ads for not only jobs but also places to rent or people with spare rooms. You can also find jobs in Perth using a major website called Seek. A lot of universities like Murdoch, Edith Cowan University and Curtin are very open to people from international backgrounds. I've been to Murdoch, ECU and Curtin but haven't been to Notre Dame which is in Fremantle, a major populated coastal suburb. Notre Dame is more Catholic oriented. Most simple jobs available to migrants or immigrants, are the basic service station (gas station) jobs, security guards for various stores, taxis, people working checkouts in supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths. A lot of people from India, The Middle East and Africa work in those jobs.

It is hotter than Sydney, but a much nicer heat. It's a very dry heat whereas Sydney is very humid and sticky!

I've been to Bondi in Sydney. Yes so many people. I love Perth. People in Perth are warmer & friendlier than the people in Sydney.

I've lived in Sydney my whole life and been to Bondi maybe twice. There are about 50 other better beaches that are far less crowded, and basically empty on week days.

The buses aren't great and are pretty infrequent. It was always quicker and easier to just drive.

I live in Florida and I want to know where these magical white sand beaches with clear blue water you speak of are? Haha! We don't have those on the West coast so you must be referring to the Keys or the Atlantic side. But seriously where? I want to know.
