The toilet paper issue gave me a chuckle as it can be the same down in Mexico. And during the four decades in my profession here, at work where there were foreign clients from all over, in our restrooms at some locations, there were signs instructing people to flush the toilet paper down the toilet and also to not stand on the toilet seat. Greetings from Los Angeles

Guilty as charged on a Gilligan comment. Good to have the hat. I think you bringing forward "cons" isn't you slagging a location, but for the viewer being "forewarned is being forarmed". $2700 for a month in Rhodes Greece is remarkable, and recognizing that this is a shoulder season and not peak tourist season. Who knew about the no flushing toilet paper - makes this guy pause for sure about that whole potentially stick and gross process (be sure not to eat straight after that!!!). THAT is VERY well worth knowing. Thanks guys as always! Almost halfway through May. Time flies!!

$2700 USD for the whole month? That is amazing, we spent $16,000 USD for 4 months in SE Asia, that includes all our flights, 2 weeks in Japan, 10 days in Vietnam, and 3 months in Hua Hin Thailand, we average $3,000 to $4,000 USD per month when travelling, we also rented a car for 2 months of the trip, and took the bullet train 2 times in Japan, and ate very well, and we do not drink alcohol (i am making way to many comments on your channel, LOL), my wife and I really enjoy your videos, keep up the great work you 2!!!!!

Great video guys! Your cons are spot on, I live here in Greece now and love it, so I'm not bagging on it either, but when we renovated our home and added on, we installed a nice new huge septic tank and the biggest waste pipes we could find. We flush paper at our place. :) But yeah, in places where everything is so old it's impossible to dig things up and completely redo the old septics - not to mention you might hit something ancient and never be allowed to finish your project! 🙈 So we get it, but travellers need to be informed!

Good comment about the toilet paper! We have found a lot of places around the world do not want you to flush toilet paper because the plumbing is old. We actually took this concept to our RV. Normal rvers have problems with toilet paper sticking to the sides of the tanks or on the sensor. We got used to it in Europe so we figured it might be a good idea and it's worked out very well. 🙂 Anna

We have found it is cheaper to stay for a month in a place, much lower accomodation costs, but you better make sure there is enough things to do where you are stuck for a month!! We were in Hua Hin Thailand last winter for 3 months, and we got bored, playing pickleball everyday helped a lot, but there is only so many times you can go to popular tourist spots, and beach days, we loved Hua Hin, and could not have done it without a vehicle, we had a car for 2 months and would have gone out of our minds without a car

First, I like the Gilligan look! Costco has the bucket hats on sale this month so I think I will get one for Bham sun (rare but we have it this week). You mentioned that Rhodes after a while was a bit boring. I can see that the committment to monthly stays for "slow travel" has its plus and minuses, but I guess you get the best bnb rate for a month, so probably you find things to do and maybe it helps decide whether you would ever live there full time. So far, for longer livability I think the Algarve is still the winner, even though Greece is wonderful.Glad you are bringing these visits to us!

We are considering shorter stays in some locations moving forward. We aren't sure about a few destinations in central America so committing to a month just to save a few hundred dollars may not be worth it. Nice follow up on your Rhodes trip. One thing about International Drivers Permit: they are cheap and easy to get. Next time you're home, visit a AAA location, bring your passport and your valid U.S. driver license, and they will issue you the International License. It is actually a TRANSLATION of your U.S. license, and you would carry both. It is valid for a year, and good to have, even if your location says you don't need it. You may get conflicting information from different authorities in the same country. I've traveled many times without one, but now make it part of my trip prep if I'm planning to drive anywhere.

International drivers permit are required in most places. You may never get asked for one, but you are legally required to have one. If you get into an accident and don’t have it your insurance may be void. If stopped by the police, again this could be an issue.
@BrianandCarrie

This is not true in Rhodes. The car company was very specific with us. They gave us paperwork in case we got pulled over. They also informed us the only time insurance would be void is if alcohol was involved.

If you're going to regularly go to the EU and can't get an esim, it's definitely worth getting a local simcard, best bought in the lesser expensive EU countries. Reason being is you can use it all over the EU, with no roaming fees. I have a Greek sim card and use it every time I travel to the EU. I pay 13 Euros a month just for the time I'm there, well worth it.

Hi Guys, Rhodes is a small island geared towards summer tourists. The big plus is the ferry to Turkey. I think Crete will be more interesting given its Minoan history. It is also going to be warmer as we move into summer. Between Greece and Turkey, I would choose a place with no cruise ships. For the KZbin channel going to places where cruise ships call is good for hits so it makes sense. I am looking forward to the videos from Crete.

A friend of ours once summed up the language situation well....if English is your first language then what do you choose as your second language? You already speak the most widely spoken second language and any other language is only going to be useful in a few countries. I personally would say after English, Spanish is probably the next most useful. We personally always just learn four simple things in the language of the country we are visiting, as I suspect you do too: Please - Thank you - Hello - Goodbye. Oooo for an Asian butt gun eh Brian....!

That is a great way to sum it up! We will be using that in conversation soon, I'm sure. We try to learn please and thank you but even then, we get a reply in English. butt gun...🤣

Good points about learning the languages. Americans get a lot of flack for only speaking English. Personally, I think it's out of jealousy that we are fortunate enough to be native speakers of the modern world's lingua franca. I speak 4 languages with varying degrees of fluency depending on how often I use the language and when was the last time I used it. Having lived abroad for over 25 years as well as teaching and being an examiner for some international exams, I am always appreciative when anyone speaks or tries to speak English. Languages are tough. Besides, you would need at least a year of studying to even attempt to be able to function effectively in any country using the local language.. Don't forget, you have to understand as well as speak... The best advice would be to learn some of the very basics, the polite phrases out of respect to the country you are visiting. You wouldn't believe how much it is appreciated by the locals and will make your travel experience so much better...

You are correct about the languages. It is always best to learn something just out of respect. As far as sim cards, we usually do get one at each new location for like you mention $15. Thank you for all the comments!! 😊

My mother's middle name is Rhodes; I've always wanted to go there! Edit: not being able to flush toilet paper down the toilet. 🤢 That's enough for me to not want to spend any more than a couple of days there. I couldn't do that in Sarandë, Albania either, just yuk! I was there for two months! Sometimes I flushed it anyway because I was just too grossed out. 😂

We didn't experience it in Saranda. we had a new, modern place while we were there so didn't have any problems.

Your medical insurance is super expensive, but that's probably because you're getting it from a US company.

We are not getting it from a US company, and it is a fraction of what we would be paying if we lived in the US. Cheers!!🍻
