An enjoyable watch and I concur! I first visited Romania in June 1990 as a back-packer and fell in love with the people (particularly their dark sense of humour and creative ways of swearing!), the beautiful countryside, and home-grown tomatoes that taste like the best fruit on earth. I relocated (also from London) to Bucharest around 12 years ago now and, like you, couldn't be happier. I also have a family here now and we spend our time both in Bucharest and in Bistrita-Nasaud where my wife is from. Learning the language and living "as like a local as possible" is, just like you say, non-negotiable as far as I'm concerned ... the thought of moving somewhere "different" to then surround yourself with folks from back home and talk just about the past is an oxymoron to me too! :)) Anyway, spor la treaba si mult succes in Romania! :)

Haideți, stimate domn, că limba română nu este așa de grea! Limba română scrisă și vorbită este o limbă fonetică: cum se aude, așa se scrie. Fiecărei literă din alfabet îi corespunde un sunet.😊 Plus că limba română nu are atâtea excepții ca în engleză. În engleză, noi la școală primară am învățat că "oo" se citește U, "ee" se citește "i". Păi această regulă are excepții: deși se scrie "door", "floor" nu la fel se pronunță că "roof" 😊. Sau ni s-a spus că pluralul se scrie cu "s" la sfârșitul cuvântului. Și aici există excepții foot-feet, tooth-teeth etc. Vă doresc toate cele bune! 😊

So glad to stumble across your channel. I too am a retired languages teacher (French and Spanish although my degree is in Russian) and I have a love of Romania. It started through friends I made at work who are Romanian and then when I went with them on trips to Romania I made friends there mostly in Constanța and Bucharest. I have also learned the language. It's harder than Spanish but easier than Russian. I'll be going to see friends in Constanța in a couple of weeks. Hope the weather cools down a bit.

It’s a great evaluation. We don’t get in Bucharest planes spraying insecticide over the city, it can be something that city of Craiova does. About the temperature: you must have 3 sets of clothes: winter for -20C with some snow, summer: for 40+C and autumn + spring ( 15-28C ). It’s true that we did not had hard winters in the last 10 years but it’s more of a cycle and when it hits, you feel it. Good to have in house: electric oil heater and AC for the summer. Bureaucracy is something that we get too and it’s something you have to accept. It is safe, especially if you don’t swing/flex with money or gold jewelry. Be normal and everything will be ok. Many people go in west Europe in search of a working society but if you come here with the money of an average person, you live above average in Romania. The only problem is that if you want to go in vacation, you will get a better experience outside of Romania with the same money.

For Craiova-out loud! Get mustar cu hrean, it's roughly the same as English mustard. I'm afraid there is no replacement for Marmite except potentially ear wax, but it's difficult to harvest.

I am C2+ in Bulgarian and I've lived here for 5 years. I have a KZbin channel where I practice speaking using improvisation style speaking to make sure I am more facile with the language. I have only found a couple other Americans who could speak at my level. That's how difficult it is. You really have to make a life decision to master the language. I've had three other YT channels that I've shut down due to family members discovering the channels and seeing me talk about things that I wanted to remain more private within my family of origin. But I disagreed with the premise that native English speakers need to learn the local language. If you're married to a local that helps immensely, but remember you should always be able to find somebody who speaks the language when you're doing something you need to do. And if you don't, hand jesters will do. I have two masters degrees in difficult professions, but getting to C2+ was the most difficult thing I've ever had to do because like Romanian, Bulgarian is extremely difficult for non-Slavic speakers.

Found it funny that the second thing about life here was a subscription ticket to a football club. I have friends who are residents in Britain and if they were never been too much in to sports home they seem to talk a lot now about their time at the game and have a subscription ticket to some local football club. As someone that had tried to escape Romania forever in the last 12 years because I don t like how people get angry very easy from nothing without reason......and recently I was ending at psychiatry to discover that I am suspected to schiztopal antisocial personality disorder..... The main reason is due stressfull behavior and way of life wide spreaded in Romania. I wonder why you would like to come in eastern Europe in a former communist country , were people in the street don t smile, but instead yelling and shouting and stress are way of life. I had plans to remain forever in France, to escape the stressfull life of Romania , i had live in Marseille and Montpellier, but there s no France anymore, it s worst than Romania on the safety/violence level. I know in UK and almost all western world is relatively the same. That s why you had left UK?

Well.....with my condition mentioned above, signs of my personality, usually I don t laugh at no one's jokes, and I find also Romanian humor that incite to violence, it s based on mocking others, arrogance. Romania and Balkan and the rest Slavic countries ( I had meet persons from Russia Poland Ukraine, Czechia and regarding to difficulty , angryness without level they are similar, for example Russia more violent, Czechia less, Poland similar) are better than third world lawless west today , sadly. But not for social life. If you value kindness, goodness and wisdom there you cannot find them in Romania, only in rare exceptions. I just compare how common native ordinary people behave in Romania and in France, Austria, Germany, Italy where I had live before. Just look at the drivers behaviors. It a common in the omania to insult in trafic, to lack of patience. Those who do this have important emotional problems. Which the state must resolve it, with harsh laws. If you go in some stores and you say good day you have much chances to find someone that doesn t answer you back and if you ask more questions details about some products they will make you a grumpy gave and react arrogant with angryness. The same if you go in a state institution, like taxes, finances, or paying your electrical bills. In the western countries that I had mention above is not common to find a native that b have like this. I had encounters persons outside europe, for example at the French work service office a lady from Morocco that was bitter like the public funcționairs in Romania. Because I had encounter too many times this in Romania , my next impulse is to smash that person head, and I have some experiences about this and i find it difficult to control everytime. I find social life in Romania at the same quality of the how look most buildings of the streets.

Loved Oradea when I visited. Never been to Cluj, Romania's most expensive city. Love it here in Craiova. Friendly people and a renovated city. If I moved elsewhere it would be to Medias, one of my favourite cities in RO.

Chiar nu ai habar ce vorbesti . Vom discuta in 20-30 de ani cand vestul va fi sub est si tot mai multi din vest se vor muta in est . Eu sunt in UK si UK-ul e in declin foarte grav . Eu sunt placut impresionat de progresul care se face in Romania , poate nu se vede daca locuiesti acolo dar daca vizitezi odata la 1-2-3 ani vezi clar si de la distanta ca progresul este imens in Romania . Diferenta de salarii nu mai este asa imensa , daca ai casa ta o duci destul de ok in Romania .

Sorry to say this but as a one time teacher I didn't rate your presentation highly. It was rather rambling and didn't cover the most important aspects of coming to Romania such as finding somewhere to live, getting temporary residency, health insurance, implications of now being a non EU applicant etc. So I'll give you 3 out of 10.
