I’ve travelled to 38 countries from the UK in my career . I’ve lived in 6 as an expat banker ( Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, China, Taiwan) . Loved Hong Kong before the CCP, loved Singapore as a PR ( still) before the price gouging . Australias lifestyle unbeatable . China - no ; Indonesia- no. I’ve been with my Taiwanese wife for 27 years and married for 17. Best thing that ever happened woman- wise. Now I’m at retirement age there’s no way I’d ever go to the UK . Too greedy, too expensive The transportation , the healthcare and education systems suck . My wife never wanted a visa to the UK but we tried it out for 1 year. Truly a s**show. The main difference is that there’l are only 6 cities I’d ever consider living in after we did the whole tour . Cambridge, St Ives in Cornwall, Torquay, York, Stamford ( Lincs) and Bath . But so does everyone else making those places so very pricey . I’ve gone too far to the other side. Absolutely nothing, I mean nothing happens in the UK after 1800 apart from boring pubs . My wife and I were at a loss. The key driver for me to buy a house and settle in Taiwan is the fantastic cheap free healthcare , education , safety and ease of traveling to other destinations like Japan or the Philippines, Vietnam etc . Transport works . I don’t live in Taipei but by the beach with a World Gym nearby plus a University . The other factor is that my Taiwan city is 60% cheaper in cost of living to places like Oxford . I first came here in 1996 but have lived constantly here for the past 7 years on a marriage APRC . I will convert that to a PR in 2025 . It’s different if you have young children because grandparents and close family in the UK want to see them. However for me I have no debts , 3 pensions and the state UK pension kicks in , in 2026 . I could live easily off that alone as I don’t need to buy anything. No mortgage, no car loans , credit cards . It’s very difficult to spend £35 per day here if you don’t drink and party. Everything we do is free almost Walking, hiking, the gym. The last thing is inflation is only 2%, mortgage rates 1.75% and energy and utility bills 20% of the cost of the UK . Plus ;no council tax . So for our age it’s perfect. If you have a younger family it’s a different situation. But I’d be insane to retire in the UK or Singapore .
Japan seems like a wonderful country, and that part about his kids being safe from violent crime, but still subjected to Japanese pedos is insightful. No tentacle molestations in the UK. Good to watch a Prozzie vlog again.

I've lived in the USA for 30 years and this is MY LAST Year here. While capitalism has catapulted the USA to the #1 economy in the world where has all that money gone? The top 1% of course. We still have one of the most confusing and expensive medicare systems in the world, good schools are unaffordable but the ONE THING that drives me out is CRIME: Brazen DAYLIGHT robbery, shootings and rampant drug problems and the trend of "decriminalization" for "low violations" such as stealing, harassments, minor assaults (a random punch in the face is fine, no jail time will be served) and PAPER/FAKE plates abundant with not a care in the world. Just a few examples. Graffitis have magically appeared all over (cops DON'T DARE to stop kids anymore) and auto thefts have SKYROCKETED 500% nationwide. "Catch and release" is the norn here in the US. The place is becoming insufferable. Getting TF out of here. No country is perfect but you pick & choose your poison and CRIME has gotten worse in the US. Unbelievable.

All countries are great if you are rich. Lifestyle can't be separated from pay. The best country to work is often not the best country to retire. Real estate prices compared to local incomes give the best answers. In my experience tracking real estate prices and value for money will tell almost the entire story.
I think Healthcare has to be considered. I don't know about NHS. Canada's Healthcare has collapsed. Waiting of 12 months to see a specialist and 18 months for a surgery. ER waiting time at least 6 hours and often another 10 hours to be seen by a doctor. People died in ER is a norm. When one does not have good health, education becomes a less concerned topic. During my recent trips to Taiwan, there were always between 30 - 40 people on wheelchairs waiting to board the EVA.
As a foreigner I’ve said this over and over again, if I had a choice, two things I would never do in Asia: 1) work an 8am-8pm office job and 2) put my children through their education system. Nothing wrong with vacationing and retiring in Asia, but I could never give up my western earning potential nor reduce any opportunities for my child to get into higher education in a western country. Local Asians would sacrifice so much just for these two opportunities if they had a chance.
@Ai-JayАй бұрын
1. The western earning potential might be higher, but at the end of the day it’s your buying power that matters. Think of all the taxes, medical bills, living costs, services, insurance and etc.. A work and life balance job could be struggle to just make ends meet, a six figure job is not necessarily easier than those in Asia. 2. Living in the states, or North America, does not necessarily mean the Ivy League schools are affordable nor easy to get in without hustling. Without the Ivy League degrees, options and opportunities are just not the same, once get out of the school, expect to live in a share house or a basement and work for a few years to just pay back the expensive loans before thinking about building a family. I am not going to elaborate the pros and cons about the environment or languages, but it’s more about how much resources ones have than the places

I wish you all the best, peace, joy, health and happiness
Something for James to consider is NHS. From what I've gathered through news, Japanese healthcare should be much better and faster than UK's NHS. Also, Brexit will continue to be a damper on UK economic performance and a cause of inflation.

I do really think the true happiness lies in where your family and friends are, in other words, your loved ones. Every country has their own issues on their education, politics, economy, immigration policies, violence, drugs, taxes and so on. Your child might have more hard time to deal with discrimination in UK than in Japan, at least I feel more comfortable and easier to live in Japan, and no one is going to bother me if I want to live in my own bubble if that’s what I have to. Canada is difficult to live in too. Difficult job market, housing crisis, over rated medical system, high taxes and living costs, increasing crimes, drug problems and the long depressing cold winter plus months, even years, on the waiting list for a day care and a family doctor, it’s just difficult for parents to raise children there.

My wife who is from H.K. we have decided to move back to H.K. or Zhong Shan China. To honest, I am excited and a bit scared at the same time. My English is better than my Chinese. but I can speak cantonese. I am an Automotive Service Advisor since 1989. Maybe once settled, I may find work in my profession again or I may just relax and retire. I know I will miss my friends in Canada. I sure won't miss the problems in Canada. Same reason I dont want my kid to grow up in Taiwan, the schooling system sucks, the American school is $$$ but so are good private schools in Australia, but I have the opportunity to shop around, same reason public schools have some rough settings, but post schooling he can go to Taiwan. After school care is also 50/50, parents who work late and need a baby sitter. I think living in Taiwan/Japan is that there is less of the new trend of western nations self depricating and trying to shun their origins, I hate this attitude becuase its a grift most of the time, so to be away from this garbage is always a good thing.

It may seem like different lives are always better. Taiwan, Japan are beautiful and more peaceful countries than the rest of the world. You say education is difficult. It must definitely be difficult. People should be educated by force if necessary. because the future of societies depends on education levels. Some things must be difficult.
