Only saying this because of the pandemic. During the 1980s I had a small black and white TV. Because that's all my parents could afford. My father was out of work for over a year. My parents had to get an old video second hand because that's all they could afford. Today I have my own 50 inch TV with loads of channels to choose from. My own laptop and Android Tablet. So no I don't wish it was the 1980s. Got more things now than I had back then.

If your living in Britain. First thing you have to do is get the old box type TV! With only 4 channels. BBC 1 and 2 ITV and Channel 4. The old VHS video and video tapes. Ditch your Laptop and Android Tablet. No Facebook. No talktime. If you want to live like it's the 1980s. Plus ditch your mobile phone. Myself I think I will stick to my Android Tablet. Plus my 50 inch TV with loads of channels to choose from.

I was a kid in the 80s but I sure didn't dress like that ;) But then, to be fair, I'm a guy and I was VERY young - we're talking not even double digits in age and under 5 years old for most of the time I spent in the 80s. But I'll tell you this: it's really interesting to have grown up at the meeting point between two eras: before and after the internet. That's crazy, to realize that my childhood was half in and half out of the age of the modern internet. Before 1995, basically, if you wanted to find anything out, you'd HAVE to go to the library. If you wanted to find entertainment, you went outside and played, or you played your Super Nintendo / Nintendo, or you played with a Gameboy, or you went bowling, or roller skating, or fishing, or whatever else - basically anything you'd do NOW except subtracting the internet. If you wanted to talk to a friend, you had to either call them on the landline phone - that's a phone with a cord attached to a set on the wall - which MOST of us had until the mid 2000s by the way (I didn't have my first cell phone until 2008 and I didn't have an iPhone until 2011, so before that it was 100% landline). Or you'd go over and see them in person. You'd go to the mall, you'd go to the park, you did a LOT more things in person. THEN, the internet became widespread in the 90s and we, being kids, adapted to it VERY easily - unlike our parents, who had grown up entirely without that in their lives. My mom still types LOL in all caps - a sign of the generation gap - and double spaces after every period. But us? We just flowed RIGHT into the internet age. It was primitive AF at first - dial up (watch the Tom Hanks movie You've Got Mail for an idea on that, takes place around 1998) but we didn't really regard it as being the crazy leap forward that it was (kids are like that - they just roll with the punches and accept anything new that comes as normal). Websites were slow and looked pretty bad - you can look up the Wayback Machine and dial it back to the 90s to see what I mean. Really, the internet wasn't used for much for most of us except simple games and communicating with friends via Instant Messenger apps right up until Myspace and later Facebook became a thing in the 2000s, by which point we were in our late teens to mid 20s. It's kind of funny writing about this like it's some kind of ancient history (which I suppose to someone who wasn't even born in the 90s, much less 80s, it would seem like it was ancient - I get that, sort of like how I think of the 60s and 70s, which I did not exist in but which my mom did exist in). Doesn't FEEL like that long ago - yet at the same time it'd be hard to go BACK to living like that now that we DO have things like youtube, facebook, twitter and so on. I think we've ALL become addicted to that connectivity that we did not have for part of our childhood. It's such a powerful tool - I've learned entire LANGUAGES just by myself online. I've met friends I played with on Final Fantasy XI for more than 10 years (the only MMORPG I ever got into). Part of me DOES miss the era before social media - because look what it's done to society - but the other part of me does realize that Pandora's box has been opened and that simple, more direct style of life ended in 1995 the moment the internet showed up in our homes. Even crazier is the realization that this - all of this that we have now - what are we at, iPhone 13 Pro? A phone with far, far more power than the best computer an ANY of our homes in the 90s - much less 80s - came around in such a small window of time. Think about how short of a time 30 to 35 years actually is. Civilization has been around for roughly 10,000 years. For MOST of that, we lived on the land, cooked over fires and hunted for our food - the wheel was the height of technology for thousands of years. It took thousands of years to get to the point we were making bronze, then eventually iron and much later steel - the first combustion engines did not appear until the late 1800s - and the airplane first appeared in 1903, not much more than 100 years ago (in other words, there are people over 100 alive TODAY who were born shortly after the first cars and airplanes were invented). The first computers showed up in the 1950s and were ENORMOUS. The moon landing happened a little over 50 years ago in 1969. Suddenly in the 80s you had the first CDs, primitive versions of cell phones (they were huge bricks but cell phones existed if you had the money), the primitive military-only version of the internet existed in the 80s, everything became ELECTRONIC. Things were speeding up. By the 90s, the acceleration in technological development was only picking up. In a few years we went from VHS tapes and VCRs to DVDs and CD players, the internet entered millions of homes, computers became more powerful every single year, we went from NES to Playstation and Dreamcast in the 90s, CDs replaced tapes entirely. 2000s came, and that brought iPhones, Facebook, Twitter and more that we now use today. That ALL happened just since someone only in their 30s - like me - was a kid. I may seem old - being in my later 30s - so someone born in 2002 - but trust me....you'll be shocked how fast the next 10 to 20 years of your life will pass and how young you still feel when they do. 30s is nothing. 40s isn't much more than that - but JUST in the last 30-35 years....it's just INSANE how much the world has shifted. Remember this. It will also apply when you are talking to YOUR kids about how things used to be way back in the early 2020s, 30 years from now when it's 2052. You'll be, by then, a lot older than I am now, you might have several children and the world will have changed a lot from how it is right now. Remember how you used to look at the 80s or 90s as this faraway era - your kids will see THIS era in the same way.

Many young people have a misconception of what the 80s were really like..they were great times indeed but not like what is portrayed now. To understand why the 80s were great, you have to understand the world of the 70s. A good half of the 80s were a carryover from the 70s without the stagflation and gasoline rationing .
@Styxswimmer Жыл бұрын
Not true. The 70s were more muted and reserved. In the 80s, it was all about size and spectacle. Your clothes were never bright enough, your hair never big enough. The 80s were a decade unlike any other with its own unique identity. I was a child of the 80s and I LOVED it.
