If you are joining the US military and you are not married then you will be living in the barracks. There are some things you will need in the barracks that the military will not give you. So here are some things I recommend you get if you are living in the barracks.

If you’re a minimalist, i suggest sticking to a laptop and a decent computer monitor to play games on. Most barracks now have a day room where you can watch tv there and some even have free wifi there.

For me when I lived in the barracks the big things I needed was a TV, Stereo, Easy Chair, a Fridge a microwave and a coffee pot. This was way back in the old days of the 70's and 80's. What I would add to this today are a computer and a gaming system. OH and always get your own blankets, sheets and pillows. Yes the ones they give you are adequate, but heck give yourself some comfort

When I was in ( mid 70,s - 80’s) E-5 and above you had your own room. During that time stereo was the big thing . I recall the base PA took a dump. We all signed up to put our Bose 901’s out the window and blast revelry and retreat.

Hilarious! I still have 901s from 1980 stashed in my attic. Don't know if they work cause I have no stereo equipment anymore.

Had a sansui setup with 901's . Still have the turn table. Bought it in 1980 at pearl harbor px , although I was stationed at Schofield barracks. Got to move off post as an e4 due to influx of privates coming in 😊

The Air Force is the opposite of the army when it comes to the barracks, they expect people to leave when they are e-3 or e-4.

Also the space force and coast guard. And those branches are the complete opposite in so many other things. This past Friday my unit was ordered at 0930 to do a room inspection. But the issue was that instead of leadership just telling us that in text message, they ordered us to stand in formation in the rain then told us. I doubt air force or space force or coast guard does anything THAT ridiculous.

Had a buddy @ bliss take fake grass (turf) from Home Depot. Measured out the square footage of the common area & his & his roommates room & utilized it after 1 SOLID STRIP/MOP of the floor prior 2. Always was a talking point of the B-room inspection from NCOIC because it was always so incredible to see. NCO can’t even say a word about the floor underneath bc below the turf it was like walking on a basketball court🤣 Squeaky Clean.

I just turned 30 last month. I have had an immense lack of purpose for the longest time. I’m going to talk to a recruiter tomorrow to get some more information. But in my mind I’m set on finally committing to something meaningful in my life. I’ve looked over some MOS’s interested in infantry/cavalry scout. If anyone has had a similar situation/ advice that’s served I would appreciate it.

So I’m going back to the same building in fort bliss after I get back from Germany. All I’m getting is a bookshelf, cube organizer, some hangers, cookware, projector, some stuff to organize the kitchen, and a shit ton of cleaning supplies (emphasis on a shit ton) and of course the obvious curtains. The rest of my stuff is currently in storage P.S. if the cabinet and refrigerator is to the bare minimum, my 1sg frowns at us. She actually encourages us to keep it full

In most cases in todays time in the army, an e6 is out of the barracks. In some caees , an e5 can get out of the barracks depending on location and unit which can be influenced by mos (typically mos that you wouldnt see in FORSCOM. So most likely something not in infantry or combat ). There are a few Very, very rare unicorn exceptions can an unmarried army solder get out of the barracks earlier like other branches but most likely those are extremely rare assignments at extremely rare places with Hardly any barracks with very rare mos (and i think even then for most of those cases you have to be an e4 promotable). The army still, along with the marines, for the majority of unmarried enlisted soldiers, has the longest barracks time with the highest rank requirements to move out if you dont get married, but thank god you dont have to be an e7 anymore in most places (except for some place like korea) in order to move out. Way back in the day it was a whole lot more common for unmarried e6 to still be in the barracks, which would drive you even more insane and force even more people to rush to get married to whatever wrong person they can in order to get out the barracks. The army and marines.....

I lived in Motel 6 size room. I got a TV. It was 1989 so it was not a flat screen. Then I got a roommate who also wanted his own TV, then another roommate who wanted his own TV. I tried to let them watch whatever they wanted on my TV but there was no room to set up a common area in the room so we could comfortably watch TV. Eventually, this tiny room would have 3 TVs all on simultaneously and we would end up having volume wars every night. Sometimes it got so bad I would stay at work hours after the work day was done just to get some quiet.

You can’t store your army weapon in your room, unless it is one of those “simple wipe down days” that lasts till 2300. If you purchase a gun at the px, it can go in the unit armory as ALL freedomship tuber say, or it can go to an e-7 or above a place, or off post storage. Many soldiers are lazy and entitled and think the post needs to bring ALL entertainment to them.😂

5:36 i dont even bother with having a television at all in the barracks room. I just stick to laptop You are in the barracks. On one hand, i get that you should try to feel comfortable but on the other hand, that goes really short on being comfortable. You are NOT IN YOUR OWN PLACE, you are not in an apartmentment or a house or condo or at home with your parents. You are in the goddamn barracks, which is like a prison cell drug halfway house. So things like having a big screen television like you would have in your own place should be a no.
