I got stationed in Korea in the early 2000's. I was at the JSA (Joint Security Area) at Camp Bonifas at the DMZ. This is the story about when I was stationed in Korea at the JSA.

My grandfather was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in South Korea on the DMZ. He was an 11C (Indirect Fire Infantryman). He had enough college education to go to OCS, but turned it down because officers had to serve six years, while enlisted only had to serve two. Fortunately, when he got to his unit, there was a shortage of NCOs and because he seemed like a bright kid to his superiors, they gave him a chance to go to NCO school. Obviously, he took it and served his two years as a Sergeant. Oh, by the way, my grandpa was only like 5’10” at the most when he was in his prime.

For my MOS 92R, Korea was sorta a dream duty cause of how little work I’ve been told riggers actually do out there.

I was Korea from 1986-1987. I can't spell the little camp we were at, it was on the north east end of the DMZ, started with a "C". Anyway, I think Korea was colder than Alaska! I was 11B and we stayed up in the "Yamas" when we weren't doing patrols on the DMZ. You should have mentioned Jinrho Soju! LOL damn that stuff was HELL!!! RANGERS LEAD THE WAY 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅

I ended up in almost the same situation you did. Was stationed at Camp Humphreys in spring 2003 with about 21 months left on my enlistment. Had a 6 month involuntary extension which left me with less than 6 months left when I was about to get orders for Hood. Decided to just ETS from Korea instead of re-upping. I actually had two job offers there in Korea, but moved back to stay with friends while looking for a job and a new place.

"Turtles" = old army slang r/t Korea used to be a one year tour, & takes a whole year to move drom in-processing to out-processing back to the states *** In hindsight, that year went by fast Turtle, also r/t Replacement personnel are always slow to arrive 👍

While I was on Camp Casey, the new personnel were referred to as turtles because it it took a year to go from In-processing to next door and PCS Out-processing.

And as you approached your DEROS date, you became rabbits as you race toward the end of your tour, as in 5 days and a wakeup.

I was at Casey and in-processing was terrible for me because I was on paper assigned at Humphreys but “with duty” at Casey. So the fact that I had to do all my administrative stuff at Humphreys while at Casey was so annoying.

My first duty station was Camp Nimble/Mobile right outside Camp Casey, ‘93-‘94. I think I would have enjoyed it quite a bit if I had been in a good unit. Mine had a notoriously lousy company CO and 1SG. I was a 77F - Petroleum Supply Specialist at the Main Supply Battalion,. I’m surprised they had an 88M doing my job at the JSA. I never dated a Korean, but I did befriend the KATUSA NCO. He was a great dude.

I was stationed at Camp Casey in the mid 80s, I was a medic with 2nd Med. In your video on your time in Korea, you talked about not knowing the meaning of being a turtle. When your new to Korea, and assigned to 2nd ID you were considered a turtle because it was going to take you a year to get from the in processing building to the out processing building which were located about 30 yards across from each other. Thus your a slow moving turtle. Loved those combat kettles!

i was in the 2nd AG company 2Inf Div 1986-1987, at first hated it, now its some of the best memories of my life!

I was there in 1978 they called everyone new to our division “2nd Infantry Division” Turtles because back then everyone had OD green uniforms and being new our reaction time was slow so we looked like a bunch of turtles trying to find our way! You know before long we’re hazing the new crop of turtles! I remember ordering Kaygogie and rice (You know what that is) BowWow LOL Bagogie is Beaf the other was K9 it was part of being a turtle! That’s what they said to order for beaf LOL

also the "turtle farm" was the 2nd replacement detachment at camp Casey because it took you one year to go from the in processing side to the out processing side hence turtles.

They called them "Turtles" because the inprocessing and out processing buildings doors were about 6 to 10 feet apart, and it took you an entire year to get from one to the other. I was at Hovey in 96

Korea 1975 - 1976. First place after Yongson was CRC, Camp Red Cloud then to Camp Hill. Was there 13 months. Went to JSA in 1976 with tour. Loved Korea, peoples, food, but unit I was with sucked big time.

I taught English in Korea 1996-1999, and went back for a veterans tour with my Dad in 2001. I got to the DMZ twice. Unfortunately I was there when the economy collapsed

I was on Camp Casey in Dragon valley in 1985 & 86, Charlie company 1st Tank, at that time there was the Midnight curfew and you had better be off the roads, we still had to have a pass to get off post, either your regular pass till midnight or a Overnight pass. At that time TDC was still a out of control GOOD time, It was a way better tour then Germany was. The night life well, that's not something you would discuss here, even your Ajima that came to the field with us, you don't want to talk about that here, Now If you had a good company Ajima you could get beer after the sun went down. As well as ummm companionship too. in those days the Army was so much different then today, even in Germany anyone that was over there in the late 1970' early 80's would know what 20 mark strassa was and where it was, or the redlight districts. it was a different world back then

I think so I was at Camp Stanley with 1st/38th FA 1978 the ROC soldiers took over that post so I think my unit moved to Casey!!

I was at Greaves and Liberty bell 89-91, 11C. Hated that cesspool mostly because of my gorgeous blonde round eye fiancé waiting back home.
