Charles C. Mann is the author of "1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus" and "1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created".
"Living in the Homogenocene: The First 500 Years" was given on April 23, 02012 as part of Long Now's Seminar series. The series was started in 02003 to build a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking from some of the world's leading thinkers. Look at the location of those lakes via the provided map.. Half of them are salt water, and almost all of the others near population centers are extremely small AND directly adjacent to a major river. The largest non-salt water lakes are in the mountainous west, with one being directly south of Western Russia.

My understanding of the Little Ice Age was that an ice dam broke, flooding the northern part of ocean with ice and very cold water, which resulted in an altered climate. Is he saying that this didn't happen, or that it happened BECAUSE of the decimation of the natives? South American potatoes could never be sold in the US. Too many consumers would end up poisoning themselves....and each other. Too bad, I'd like to try them. Thanks for a fascinating video!!! Great stuff!
