✝️✝️✝️ 😎😎😎 I was spending several months at Snowmass Colorado TRAPPISTS MONASTERY in 2005. I looked out the kitchen window to see this Trappist Monk Keating by the hummingbird feeder with over one hundred little birds flying around him. I didn't know who he was at the time. Back then he was the Abbott of the Trappists Monastery.

Fr Keating was a spiritual master. Catholicism was his tradition, his container, as Fr Richard Rohr would say. However, he transcended the religious container that was his tradition and was a true mystic, embracing most wisdom traditions - east and west. I love how Fr Thomas can bring together scientific theories, the laws of the Universe, Jungian psychology of shadow self, human nature... all undergirded by his vast experience of the presence and the love of God. Such a great teacher. Speaks with such love, humour and simplicity.

I attended two 10 retreats at Snowmass. The last was 2013. He was in his 80’s then. He visited the retreatants to give a short lecture and answered all questions for 90 minutes. A deep answer to every question asked. One statement from him that helped me understand God, his statement was, in a question to all of us was “You all know that the Holy Spirit is not a bird or a pigeon.” My response was holy cow, a priest / monk just said that! Since then, I have been practicing CP daily and reading every book he has involved in. I see him as a mystic. ❤

(Minute 14:00) "The most important thing about each of us is not us, but God's Presence IN us manifesting the infinite tenderness and love of God in a way no one else will ever be able to do. In other words, God is experiencing what it's like to be HUMAN in YOU! And this He finds great pleasure in, contrary to whatever you may think about it. So, if you have any doubt that there's any problem with those, those of you who are especially Roman Catholic should remember that the sacrament of reconciliation is one of the seven sacraments. That means, if you ever do something contrary to your conscience, all you have to do is go to confession, and that's the end of it. I would add, however, that you don't have to wait to go to confession. Most of us are doing something 7 to 70 times every day that, you know, we just as soon would not have done! I mean, said a nasty word, or didn't look at someone who needed a kind smile, or any of the 101 things that we sometimes do when we're NOT in the Presence of God. It is so important to remember that you only have to be SORRY--NOW for all of your sins to be wiped away! No need to wait to go to confession. You can do that at the appropriate time...if you can FIND a confessor nowadays! The main thing is that as soon as you're SORRY God has totally forgotten whatever our faults were. And He would be very happy if we would forget it too! As I said elsewhere, if you have guilt feelings for more than 10 or 15 seconds, it's neurotic!! It has nothing to do with genuine contrition or compunction. It's simply the sadness that comes from pride and recognizing we're not a "big shot" or as perfect as we thought we would be! We now know from psychology there's a certain temperamental predisposition towards negative feelings about ourselves. For instance, some people are born with a perfectionistic personality. If anything goes wrong, they blame themselves. Whatever they do, it's never good enough. And so they're constantly haranguying, you might say, by this SHOULD or HAVE TO do this. To be happy I have to do this to be faithful. Here's a good principle for everyday life. Whatever you feel you HAVE to do, don't do it. Whatever you feel you SHOULD DO, avoid it! And whenever you feel you MUST do, go in the opposite direction! If you feel that you shouldn't do that, you should do it!! Should, have to, are temperamental dispositions and they really have nothing to do with the love of God but they're rather self-centered or self-serving concerns that are rooted in our security needs that are always exaggerated. Remember it's really very simple to figure out what's wrong with us. So simple. So obvious! Look at any baby one day old." (18:43)

Compare what Mr. Keating talks about at the very beginning to the following: "The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite." ~ A Course in Miracles They are saying the same thing. Why? Because the experience of the Divine is universal. The paths to its attainment are many. A Course in Miracles is but one. I followed its teaching, had the experience of peace that is beyond understanding, and now enjoy listening to those like Mr. Keating who are also teachers of God. I offer this quote to be heard by the right person at the right time.

This is an introductory session with Fr. Thomas Keating on Centering Prayer. It is not a how to introduction but a discussion of being centered in God and allowing His Presence to become the transformation of our being. The talks arr about an hour long so I have included the link to the Contemplative Center. He teaches from the Gospe, not the Old Testsmemt. It's actually more reflective. It is for all people of faith and of no faith. He is the one I met at Sewanee and who changed my whole outlook of life.

This is very very super. One thing. According to Christians, Muslims, and some in Judaism, when you die, you just go to the ground, and wait for the messiah, or the end of the world to be judged whether to go to heaven or not. Until then, you just stay in the ground. I remember a priest saying some decades ago that if you even say that you want to be cremated, then you are automatically excommunicated from the Roman Cahtolic Church. Things have changed so much recently.

sadly that this can not reach so many that really need God’s love because their home has no love - comparing God’s love to a grandparent or parent that are abusive and neglectful as so many are in so many homes of the hurting masses , does not give a positive connection to God. If you have never felt LOVED unconditionally the analogy is actually hurtful.

The rigid dogmatic Catholics and Evangelical believers will always react negatively to people like Thomas Keating. His thinking borders on the non-dual, and that is heresy to dogmatic Christians. Realization of G-d as the “ground of being” which is written of by Christian mystics of all ages is the aim of Centering Prayer. In Christian language it may be described as unity with G-d. “...not I but Christ lives in me...” in the terms of St. Paul. This should be acceptable to all but the most rigid Christian minds, but those are the ones who have always condemned and persecuted mystics.

Because we have always had too many tired eyes in our society, they inwardly note that a situation is wrong, but they refuse to stand up and be counted against that which is not right! They allow society to be thrown into a relativistic framework, where some people allow anything to be counted as at least true within the ground of their relativism. Neil, they have not opened up their tired eyes and realized that there is a human truth that guides our lives. Their eyes are closed to that which makes us people.
