Wow! I was a "Punk Rocker", in 1981, when I moved, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to NYC, at 19! Stanley Bard, took me in, and was like a father, to me, until I burned out, and had to move, back, to the Midwest! You should write a Volume II, "The Prelude to Madonna!" Haha! I was living there, when the Grand Dame, turned 100!!! It was a sight, to behold! I have some awesome, photos!! Look me up, for some "ghost stories?" The place is super, haunted!!!

She may be a nervous public speaker but over all she did well in that she delivered some interesting info..I have read below and it seems maybe it's not all accurate but she is one hell of a photographer...I am an amateur photographer and started taking photography in high school and got the chance to learn how to use a dark room...I don't use a dark room today because I can't afford it and it wouldn't fit into our house but I take a lot of photos and it is harder then it looks to capture s moment...and she captures many.

What an amazing story and what a sad ending that shouldn't have happened! It was so beautiful to have all these different artists, musicians, literary artists, etc. And what history! And now what is it going to be turned into? This is NY History, how can this be allowed?

That was a warm, witty and fascinating glimpse into the crucible of art and artists in NY NY at a particularily innocent time, compared to now perhaps? Perhaps not. Your photographs of those moments is far more atmospheric & captivating than any moving images, imho. Thank you very much.

Fascinating. Thank You. So much insight for my recent Hotel Chelsea binge. Just for reference at 4min photo is not 1960s, it is later, actually1990s. The big car in foreground is a 1995ish Fleetwood Brougham.

THANK YOU for this video)) that was a pleasure to dive into the history of this masterpiece. I had a dream to visit NY and take a look at this hotel. I crossed Manhatten from Battery Park all the way up to Central Park. The most desirable place to see was Chelsea Hotel. So I stopped just across the street and had a cigarette. That was a good time. Realizing that you actually did this, sitting and staring at the building you were craving to see. And you know why? Because of history that stands behind its walls, one writer overdosed himself with whisky, some famous books were written down at this place. And Sid Vicious killed his Nancy at this hotel. My trip was back in 2012 and tonight I just finished watching Sid and Nancy movie and all those memories brought me back to that good time that I had while visiting New York. "New York this is a very special town and when you live in a very special town very special things happen".

I second the fact that the photo she says is from the 60s is actually at the earliest from the very late 80s or early 90s, and the cars are from the mid to late 80s. Really completely inaccurate to say the cars are from the 60s. The guitar/musical instrument store she mentions has only been there since 1989. It moved a few doors west around 2008 or so. Also, the you can see the film brand is FUJI film, which was not in use in the U.S. much until the 1980s. Also, if you say you used a tripod for the moon/sign photo, but there is camera shake in blurring the photo, what is up with that?
@donniemoder1466
@donniemoder1466 8 жыл бұрын
And the Guitar store was a Record store in 1978 if you look at photos from the days of Sid Vicious' death.

That one point is not true. In the Chelsea yes you need permission (it's private property). Once an actor steps outside on the sidewalk you can photograph anything you want they are in public. Unlike other private people, they are in the limelight. They surrender their privacy. With restrictions. You can't follow them into the bathroom. If they don't like getting their picture taken they never should have become actors or celebrities. You can't and shouldn't invade their privacy so try not to shoot when they are dining with families or business people. And don't harass them. Take a picture and leave. You'd be surprised how many will volunteer to pose. Just ask them...not their handlers. I worked PR in entertainment in the 70s and 80s. They would tell me before exiting whether they would stop once for pictures, or not. If they don't want to be seen believe me I would get them out and no one would ever know they were there. The actor/celebrity being pains in the asses is bad PR for them. They usually cooperate. They know the routine & the sacrifice. If the hotel is marked as a historic building how can they just knock down wood carvings & brickwork or anything that was part of its historic designation? Virgil Thompson was first and foremost a composer, not just a critic. Pal Shazar is a singer-songwriter who has been around for decades & has released her most recent CD in 2019. She was a member of an 80s band called Slow Children who issued two major label LPs on RCA. She married renowned singer-songwriter Jules Shear who wrote hits for Cyndi Lauper & The Bangles along with many of his own solo LPs. He also invented the MTV concept of unplugged sessions. I was going to criticize the video but after watching it intently I can't. The documentation of the Chelsea Hotel, what it was and what it became was done well. It could've been done better but no one else did it and Linda Troeller did. So, kudos to her for all her work & effort. There may be inaccuracies but I have seen inaccuracies in more professional documentaries. I will watch this again...as many years pass this will have even more value. Bureaucrats don't care about history.

You might want to fact check your claim that Arthur Miller had some of his children while living at the Chelsea. As far as I know, his wife made him move before they had children saying, "I'm not raising children in this place." Not an exact quote--I can't remember exactly what she said.

That picture at 3:50 definitely isn't the 60s. "Circa the cars". Those absolutely aren't 60s cars. I'm not going to put the time into figuring it out, but at least one car is from the 80s if not the 90s which means the picture can't be older.

Are you an artist? Have you ever needed alot of warehouse or other old space, because you had a vision? Rent is so expensive these days, and in general artists are not getting a even meager living. Renovictions are very common in the artist community, its so heartbreaking to have our original spaces altered. I've had this happen to me. So sad.

It is such as shame this woman is not a capable public speaker! It is too long a speech to listen to without someone better at it - someone not stuttering or not possessing a flat tone. I do want to hear the rest of it because of its content, but I will have to do it in installments because of her lack of talent - quiet irritating actually - the Chelsea deserves better. prepro, well...a lot of creative people have lived there. “Spoon River Anthology” by Edgar Lee Masters is a great poetry book. The thing is, you have to go pre-1970 to get the real talented people. After that, it was just filled with a bunch of posers. But if you go pre-1970s and read every book by everyone who lived there, you’d be better educated than most college literature majors. Christo was an interesting artist. His NY Times obit was long!
