As a farmer, I was sort of put off by this video. "Living like it's 2050"??? People have been living like this for hundreds of years. Cob houses? That's not new. Sustainable living and/or farming?? That not new. Living eco-conciously?? Well, the name is new but the people of The Greatest Generation and older such as the folks from the Great Depression lived very consciously. They had to. Nothing could go to waste. There's just a new name that's being applied to living like this. These are not new concepts. Give credit where credit is due...the past generations. People say it's forward thinking. No, no it's not. It's recalling past information. The issue is that a lot of people over the past 40-50 years have gotten so spoiled and pampered and catered to with convenience at every corner that they took hold of the disposable idea and ran with it. Oh this looks old...throw it out, we'll get another one. These people have procreated and spawned a whole new generation that's even worse than they are in believing that the world is theirs. Nope. We belong to this Earth. Not the other way around.
@jeremypayne41879 жыл бұрын
I believe the "living like it's 2050" title comes from the reference for a need to shift to lower green house gas emissions by 2050. I think they simply meant that in 2050 this type of operation should be the norm if we don't want to face unstoppable climate change.
@thesupermom19759 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Payne Aha! I went back and watched the video again. I'm following you. Thank you for helping me out there. It still seems as though they are making it seem as though these are innovative thoughts with the Transformation Town thing. People used to live like this. I don't really think I agree with the man named Tim though. He said something about the majority of people living in large cities and rural land be operated like his property, the Pickard Mountain place. I think that in order to save time, have fresher foods, and cut down on the use of fossil fuels in production, people that have any kind of property available to them should have a garden, some chickens, a milking goat, and fruit trees. Even if these people live in the city...community gardens. Aquaponic centers. Even if it's a concrete lot...raised beds. It's a matter of getting people on board with caring for these animals, responsibly collecting rain water, getting dirty and maybe even pulling on some goat teats. But the reality is...people are too hmmm...what's the word...selfish? No. Wussy-fied? No. Detached! That's it! Before we started homeschooling our kids, the boys would occasionally get a carton of milk at school with snack or maybe I forgot their green tea (yes, I would use a refillable container and brew them tea every morning and put in their lunches)...anyhoo...they'd try to drink the "manufactured milk" (that's what the boys call it) and gag. Or they'd just give it away and the kids would be like "what? is there something wrong with it?" And they'd explain that manufactured milk tastes so gross compared to fresh goat milk and the kids would be like EWWWW! You drink goats milk?!?! Oh my gosh you touch a goat's titties???? EWWWWW! ....but wait....I've gotten nearly the exact same reaction from adults...some even older than me. People are detached. But in reality, the way our population is growing, these detached people need to get over it and reconnect with their food. And the earth.

This is just subsistence farming, with a few little perks like solar and wind power. Backbreaking work all day and you hope the land will yield enough food to let you live another year, plus maybe a little extra to trade for things you cannot produce yourself. And even if they become food-independent, which I doubt they will, if the bad times they predict do come to pass, they will be wiped out by the first wave of starving city dwellers who come boiling out of the city when the grocery store shelves are empty.
@rstevewarmorycom6 жыл бұрын
thesupermom1975 People didn't always have glass, solar cells, wind turbines,batteries, or the knowledge to use them and how to build houses to heat and cool themselves. This knowledge was known by some few, different items of it, but in the past it was mostly brute forced by manual and animal labor and burning wood. We can do MUCH better now with the whole new collection and dissemination of knowledge.

The problem I see hear is that I don't think they realize how hard farming is. There's no getting around it, if you want to farm and not live in poverty you NEED machines! You are obviously not a scientist. Do some math and it will tell you there is only 4 acres of land for every person on earth... considering that half of the earths land is not suitable for agriculture that leaves each member of earth with only 2 acres to grow food on, that is of course meaning that there is no left over land for forests to grow... Eating meat takes up an extreme amount of land compared to a plant based diet. It takes 5 acres of land for a single cow to pasture on... Theres just not enough land on earth for everyone to eat meat. By doing so you limit the supply of food and drive up the costs of land so that other people are forced not to eat... In simple terms: by eating meat you are forcing other people to starve, that. Is scientific fact... BTW you should know this: animals eat plants, and they retain all of there tissue from eating plants... That means that humans can retain all the same nutrients from eating plants that an animal can, (of course excluding B12, but you can supplement it of course... I HOPE that you are now more educated about this because there was a time when I thought like this too... There are solutions however (bear with) there are new technologies in the field of agriculture that would allow us humans to eat meat without slaughtering an animal (also known as In-vitro meat/lab grown/cultured meat) this is done in the same way normal meat is made, except outside an animal: this is done by growing animal cells in a nutrient tank and growing them into tissue... The meat also contains no cholesterol or trans-fat and you wouldn't have to kill helpless little animals...

treating animals well, and RECOGNISING it's sacrifice of life to sustain YOURS is the most respect you can show. Too many people today are so disconnected from the death that is required to sustain ones life that they carry that irreverence for life itself into thier everyday lives... and it shows in how they deal with other people. MS. Garcia pointed out that you are still "KILLING IT". Of cource you are, life feeds on death... Respect that which gave it's life for yours.

@timtrammell397110 жыл бұрын
1caramarie well missy, I actually do what they are pretending to do. If this (sustainable movement) is going to work, we have to make it mainstream, it can't be viewed as another hippy counter culture movement. It has to be real people making real improvements that can be translated into affordable and accessible food for everyone.
@1caramarie10 жыл бұрын
Well, Timmy, I guess you are out of the loop, because it's not another hippy counter culture movement, when "real" people with families are the ones that are doing it. Just because you watched a video with some nutcases, including one who "manages" a farm and acts surprised when the guy says she manages the farm, especially since she does even know her "bugs". I sell at a small farmer's market with a very low few for the members (how does $3.00 a week sound), which results in very low prices for the customers, lower than the local grocers INCLUDING the local Walmart. Where nearly everyone uses organic methods but can't afford to be certified organic because that is expensive. And where we trade with each other. That seems affordable and accessible food for everyone, including the local food pantry that often gets what is left after the market closes. Then there is the business that allows us to set up for free (which explains the fee) and the owner who now is growing the vegetables he sells in his small restaurant. I suggest you actually read and research before assuming that you are somehow different and superior to the rest of us. How much affordable food do you provide to anyone asides from you?

Nice idea, but that farm looks like it's lacking.....where's the plants and why would anyone let the greenhouse be wasted? I think the garden manager is lazy and just doesn't want a job. Lame ending too.
@MarcellaSmithVegan10 жыл бұрын
I was actually thinking the same thing, my garden is a quarter that size and very full of lush growing food ( and I live in the suburbs!). These look sparse and unattended. I get the idea, but this farm looks like it came from the past, not the future. You can live on a few acres and produce alot of food and yet enjoy a thinking active life without dropping down to small huts with wood stoves, my goodness they have an electrical supply, they should use it!. Who buys the grains for those animals anyway in their bare ground little fenced in areas? Perhaps the manager should think more about work than eating the pigs.
@AndrewOvenden10 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you two live, but here in North Carolina, there wouldn't be much sense cultivating the greenhouse in the summer months unless you want to cook your vegetables while they're still on the plant. Plus, you would not want to work in a greenhouse in summer in North Carolina summers' heat and humidity. Also, it's apparent that this was shot in late summer, when a lot of the plants in North Carolina will have already been harvested and areas just about ready to be prepared for fall crops.
@sinmore1110 жыл бұрын
Andrew Ovenden Yes, that must be the difference because the only thing that lady was raising to eat was those pigs...and why not film at harvest time to show the 'bounty'. I'm still not impressed with this 'look at me' video...no matter where the locale...
@AndrewOvenden10 жыл бұрын
Well, I just don't get the criticisms here. The video was not produced by the farm's owners, Since this is just one snapshot in time, why not ask the filmmaker why she didn't call ahead to ask if the farm was all spruced up and ready to show its best side. Besides, which "harvest time" do you want? This is quite apparently not a monocrop farm, so some crops will have been harvested prior to others. I just googled the place and some of the other available videos and images show the place in a much more verdant state.

I'm sorry you are getting all these negative comments about raising animals for food. I try to be a non-meat eater but I know the difference between modern cruelty in mechanized animal farming compared to the animals raised on my grandparents farms half a century ago. Chicks raised by the their mothers and growing up in a safe yard under a blue sky enjoy a life that is a world of difference from the chickens these folks will eat if bought in modern supermarkets and fast food joints. Meat eating is cruel, yeah, but there is a world of difference in the possibility of any creature to enjoy its life depending on how it grows up. Chicks need to be protected from crows as well as dogs and cats, much less foxes etc. And goats and hogs are not really critters you want running wild in nature unless you like grasslands without forests - goats denuded much of the the Mediterranean world of its forests long, long ago. And feral hogs eat any critters they can get their mouths around. Good luck having amphibians or even fish in your creek, or box turtles and wild herbs in your forests. These are not critters you want to be let free in lands where they didn't evolve.

@ludeluver Those are good questions as cob can appear to be not much more than mud. It's actually very durable, both because it's porous and because most cob homes are made with wide enough eves and non-absorbent bases to prevent moisture and rain from eroding. It's not any dustier since the walls are usually plastered similarly to a conventional home. Earth buildings tend to be good insulators against the heat, but not necessarily great in winter (why adobe tends to be in the Southwest).

I can tolerate meat eaters, but not meat eaters who think they are doing a favor to the animals they imprison for life. You're not receiving their "gift of life", you're taking away their life. Now I understand all the "being a good person for the environment" crap, it's a reaction formation to their violent unconscious nature.

That won't stop animals from eating other animals. Why is eating animals only a sin, in your view, if man is the one doing it? YHWH, the Holy God of Israel and Most High God, said we could eat meat in this fallen world. Creator makes the rules (and it is suppose to make you sad; they're doing it because of something our ancestors invited into the world: animals didn't even eat each other in the Garden of Eden-they would eat green things i.e. Genesis 1:30, while we ate every seed bearing plant i.e. Genesis 1:29). • _Genesis __1:29__-30 (NIV)_ 29 _Then God said,_ _“I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it._ _They will be yours for food._ 30 _And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground_ - _everything that has the breath of life in it_ - _I give every green plant for food.”_ _And it was so._ Everyone use to be vegan in the non-cursed earth. All this changed after man invited sin and death into the world and got kicked out of Eden. Environment change, diet change. Eating meat is not necessary for survival, but it is acceptable while we're living in cursed conditions, with death in the world. So the people in this video, and elsewhere on the planet, can eat meat if they so choose. It is not evil. (I personally am not a fan of meat, but I do consume chicken eggs, as my body gets out of whack without an animal protein). What I do disagree with is their choice of animal to feast on. YHWH has clean/unclean distinctions with respect to the human diet. People who ignore his laws are doing so at their own risk. Or they're just not aware of what those laws are. He prohibited certain animals for our own good-and quite possibly the environment's own good too. • _Isaiah __66:17__ (NIV)_ 17 _“Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens,_ _following one who is among those who eat the flesh of pigs,_ _rats and other unclean things_ - _they will meet their end together with the one they follow,”_ _declares the Lord._ • _Leviticus __11:47__ (NIV)_ 47 _You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean,_ _between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.’”_ • _Deuteronomy __10:12__-13 (NIV)_ 12 _And now,_ _Israel,_ _what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God,_ _to walk in obedience to him,_ _to love him,_ _to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,_ 13 _and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today_ *for your own good* ? He even has commands over harvesting from fruit trees so that they be bountiful (Leviticus 19:23-25) and concerning land sabbaths (Leviticus 25:1-7) which would benefit us and the land. May YHWH teach them and all in the transition movement to love his instructions, and bless all those who heed his warnings. And may he bring his knowledge to those who've never tasted it before, so they can propsper. In Jesus' name, so be it. (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡

Patricia Brennan, why do you eat plants? Poor plants, they wanted to live a happy life and you kill them! After all, what's the difference between a plant and a pig, they all are living things after all, you callous soul.
@chaka97749 жыл бұрын
Patricia Brennan Trees and plants are living things as well. When you harvest your viggies, that is also killing a living plant. Just saying it's easy to point the finger. Maybe you should think about focussing your anger on the oil companies that will kill thousands,hundreds of thousands of animals with one oil spill. Those creatures can not be eaten.zero good comes from those deaths.Yeah, but you probablydrive a car or have an oil or gas heating system, or own something made of rubber or simply mass produced in an oil powered plant somewhere so that would be hipocritical too. This farmer could be doing much worse. Live and let live. The world would suck if every one was just like you. Or just like me for that matter.

If your farm is well set up, drought and parasites shouldn't be an issue (mulch, functional diversity, layering...). Totally agree with keeping animals, I just don't see the need for eating them (especially in this case if she doesn't enjoy it). There are many easier/suffering free ways to create a revenue on a farm.

very well put! "relationship with my food". But the continuing spiral of separation from what we use to do and know makes it that much easier for humans to end up depending solely on supermarkets for food. Its very important for people to understand that not all progress is good.

Its not wrong to eat meat. Eating meat can be beneficial to the environment. Cows eat grass (a food source not able to be digested by humans) and turn it into meat (very nutrient/calorie dense food). The cow also provides manure fertilizer. If every person on earth was a vegetarian, millions more acres of land would have to be converted to cropland. You people have no right to attack her for her choices of diet.
@sheratonwelch19679 жыл бұрын
+Farmer Nate I would suggest doing a little research on the way the meat and dairy industry is actually effecting the planet. Do you really think cows and other animals would reproduce at their current rate of we weren't artifially insemanating them? Did you know it takes 660 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef? If the entire world went vegan it would decrease land used for farming. You are pretending we live in a world where every animal here, is here by natural causes. They aren't.
@Heritagepostfarms9 жыл бұрын
Sheraton Welch Factory farming is bad for the environment. Free range meat farming is beneficial to the environment. I would know, considering I have a college degree in Agriculture and am a free range farmer.
@SS73GO9 жыл бұрын
+Farmer Nate I think if people did their research, they would realize that the negatives that are contributed to by eating meat HUGELY out-way the positives. On top of that the idea that we are "omnivores" is hugely debatable, if you look at all the physical aspects of the human body they resemble all herbivores the most (teeth, intestine, jaw movement, acidity of the stomach). So we need to consider not only what is good for the environment but what is actually the natural diet of a human being.

Yes, we need a new paradigm taking into account our true position in this world. The important question is 'how deep does ecology go?' Try to run your farm without a truck, electricity or replacement parts for the solar, then some answers might arise. You are certainly right in your foresight and now you are building Atlantis through practice. There are now many communities exploring how to meet the coming problems. All problems are surmountable. Personally, I am attracted to cooperations and practicing such has taught me much, even wisdom.

Section the garden off with fence into 3 parts.Pigs in one,clover in the next and garden in the third. Rotate each year for constant fertility.Let the chickens loose in the garden to eat bugs and slugs.Build a compost trench on the uphill side of the garden and the leachate will constantly fertilize the garden.

We are really starting to focus on commercial aquaponics though. We can produce a lot more food in a shorter amount of time. The best part is we use the Time Bank System so we don't have any labor expenses. We can then sell our non-GMO food at GMO prices.

This was posted late summer so of course no one is using the greenhouse. With all those beds how many people are they really feeding? They don't need to have them full unless they need to make money off selling them. Dude sold his business and bought 350 acres, I doubt he needs to sell off food to buy the things he needs. There was plenty of food there for a dozen people. I really enjoyed seeing their approach to many different issues and would love to have 20 acres set up like this.

@BigTimePride Setting aside climate change as it seems that people enjoy making this one into an argument, I think there are plenty of arguments for living in a more self-sufficient way, even if it's just to not have to rely on anyone else for your way of life. I could go on (e.g. access to very fresh, quality food; the satisfaction many people feel in just getting their hands dirty; and that feeling of accomplishment with making/growing your own), but hope the videos speak for themselves.
