Top down is the only way. No need for a damper on the pipe, it tends to block some draft with your good stove. We use mag thermometers on stove tops to check since we use 100%heat with wood. And use your ash pan, so you don't have to shovel out the fire box. It's worked for us.

In the beginning, we did not use a damper, and after installing it we tested it… we found a significant increase in heat with it with almost no effect to our draft. It’s worked for us…but that’s not to say it wouldn’t work without it. We’ll continue to monitor it and make adjustments if needed 👍 Shoveling it out is much easier for us, though I can see where just pulling the plug works too 😊

@@HanbleceyaRanchJust watch creosote ( possible chimney fire ) with a damper. Hot fires are best for clean flue.

We do run a hot fire every morning after running it the night before. We also use creosote conditioner regularly.

I just read the regulations to installing a wood stove in Philadelphia. They make sense considering we have the smallest pots in the country.

I can’t say I’m familiar with Philadelphia’s regulations regarding wood stoves but it sounds like you’re on the right track. 👍

Lol that's the same wood stove I got lol. I love it. I can even cook on the top! Hint, Get a wet paper towel and dip it into the ashes then clean the glass with it. The black soot will come off super easy in seconds and be like new! Give it a try! Makes me want to light mine up right now lol. Always enjoy ya'll sharing, wish I had a Baker stove LOL Take care. oh and save your ash for the garden and charcoal for many other things like filtering. Work great on removing toxins etc. All great by-products of a wood stove.

We love our stoves. We do use the ash and paper towels to clean the glass. With as cold as it’s been it stays a bit too hot to do it all the time!! Our Bakers Choice was a blessing. We had an old antique one when we first moved in but it was too drafty for a beginner to use. Have a great week!😊

The thing I love about a top-down fire is you put all the wood in, light it, and walk away. No need to go back and open the door two or three different times, putting in bigger pieces of firewood. I can't imagine why anyone would ever start a fire any other way, once they try doing it this way.

It is a great way to keep that fire going for hours!! Keeps it nice and warm at night!😊
