I sold my flat yesterday! Walked out of a job I hated not long ago and decided that No one was going to find my happy for me so off I shall go! Someone is building a van and all things being equal I'll be hitting the road in late Feb. The sense of being untethered, has set my soul singing. I'm going to be a bit cash poor but will have a rich source of our most valuable commodity; time. I'm excited to get on the road and actually have time to smell the roses and just stand and stare at the bounty nature has given us. Oh and blog! I'm clearly a frustrated blogger!! I'm 52 and feel exactly like you describe. To quote Queen, "I want to break free". Working stupid amount of hours every week in the hope I'll have enough to retire on at age of 67. The thought of another 15 years is like a prison sentence. So last year after watching many youtube videos of camper van builds, I decided to build my own. It's almost finished. The next step scares the hell out of me. How do I actually break free. Good video, thanks for posting.

Always good to read people are making the most of life 😎. For many the difficulty is having the courage to change, and the having the fear of 'what if'... We moved from London UK, jacked in our jobs, sold the house and drove east to France with an old Land Rover, a caravan and the cat: no house sorted, no jobs to go to. Best feeling I've ever had when we were on the Ferry at midnight, and best three months living on a campsite for three months whilst we looked around. Be brave. Make the changes you need to have the life you really want!

I was 40 and in exactly the same way as this guy. I had a well paid career job in marketing, a house (mortgaged) two cars (idiot). However, I never felt satisfied or happy. One day I questioned myself and realised I needed more. I quit my job, sold my home, took my savings and decided to travel and like the old cliche 'find myself'. I ended up living by the med, an apartment and working for myself successfully as a private English tutor. I work hard in the winter so that I can have three months completely free to enjoy the summer here. It was the scariest decision I made in my life, was seen to be a bit of a fool, however 15 years later I understand it was the best decision I ever made.

Fantastic...BUT! I would LOVE to do the same but I am tied down with a mortgage! my idea would be to build a tiny house and live in that offgrid (solar, rain catchment, permaculture etc) and there lies the problem here in the UK and that is 'LAND' finding some cheap land and living on it is hard because the council want their cut or you have to have it registered etc.

I'm building my own van so I can break free next spring. I'm about halfway through. One word of caution to all Van Dwellers though. Just as in conventional life, It wont be long before the Government decide the community is so big that it needs controls. That will mean new Laws, rules, regulations, insurances, taxes etc etc etc. You see where I'm coming from. They do it to every piece of happiness and freedom we create for ourselves. We must be prepared and so I believe the only protection we have, would be to fight any controls on the grounds of discrimination. e.g. That Van Dwelling is a culture not a leisure activity. If we are not forearmed, we will end up paying the same as living in bricks because of all the licences, fees, insurances etc, that we would have to pay. Then we are back to square one having to work 60 hours a week just to pay. If we're not careful It will come, its the Governments way of controlling people and generating taxes.

Hmm not sure about that, there are 35 million vehicles on Britain's roads (too many obviously) but people love their vehicles and everybody would be outraged if they were taken away, not just van dwellers... living this type of lifestyle will always be cheaper in utility bills providing you have a good setup, this is only going to get better as solar technology improves. I agree the government is increasing taxes and will want to get old dirty diesels off our roads and older vehicles generally that emmit more C02 but is that a bad thing? As technology moves on vans will probably be electric, hybrid, or even hydrogen. Sorry if I sound like a nerd, just trying to present a positive alternative to what you say may happen... I guess none of us really know though.

Looks crap to be honest if i worked as much as him through his life and ended my days living in a Caravan/van i'd consider my life a failure. Freedom = great, living in 3mm thick non-insulated tin box in the UK climate = Not so great. Sewerage? Power? Water? No mention of partner, kids....etc. Seems like an idealist and bit of a hermit. Great for some, but others of us are happy doing what we do. I don't think painting particular parts of society as bad because of your own idealogy (on things like mortgages etc) is a good way of being. To each his own, but i won't be living in a caravan or van at 60...i'd sooner suicide and shuffle off this mortal coil. Kudos for living your life your way.

Better to work for yourself, work towards getting away from it all and having time to enjoy your life. Really great guy, and yeah I found myself saying just a few hours ago that I feel it's nice to have some kind of focus while travelling to help structure the trip and give you ideas of where to go and what to do along the way.

I can't play any instrument but I love to listen to someone who can if Clive ever needs a place to stay for a few nights in the South Yorkshire are we have a big garden and plenty of room for him and his dog. Good luck for the future Clive. I'll be subscribing to your channel.

Clive - I love your vlog and am totally in sync with your philosophy of taking things easier and lifestyle. If you want a gentle experience of climbing I suggest you consider the quieter parts of the Lake District which are less demanding peaks than say Scotland .. One particular suggestions is the upper Duddon Valley which is very remote and probably well suited to overnights stops off road without being hassled. Good luck and Enjoy!!

Cracking video. Good point about patience and uncoupling. I think just the amount of 'stuff' both physical and obligatory just seems too much to deal with, but with planning and patience it can be done. I see these young kids who own hardly anything and it's far easier for them. I have a loft jammed to the rafters and totally tied in to commitments.

Its liberating to hear that people like Clive want to live with nature as it were. Good on you! I myself love the idea of living off grid without some of the hassles of modern life. I believe the biggest hurdle is breaking free of modern constraints the process does seem quite daunting.

Little tip for van dwellers from a domestic solar installer and many of you may already know it, if you want to get maximum efficiency from your solar panels and charging batteries (deep charge) you're best off if you can discharge ie use electrical power in DC as you'll be charging in direct current ie run a 12 volt lighting circuit. Getting rigged with solar isn't cheap but if you're away from a supply that small amount of power could be very valuable eg on a laptop, using the internet or charging your phone. As soon as you need to use an inverter to swap the stored power in battery to ac/dc that is when you're getting much less efficiency. Happy travels to all.

@@LifeSwapTV You're welcome and couldn't agree more as regards we are being mugged or tricked into the millstone of mortgage debt etc. I nearly suggestedd the obvious log burner for your mobile home but Im sure you've considered that and maybe you're off on travels soon, I reckon there is probably huge community of people for you to meet up with. If you ever get down to Morocco head for Imsouane if you like a bit of surfing, lovely weather in our winter time and cheap.
