Living Off the Edge: River Rapids to Homestead Bliss - Epic Adventures & Harvesting Dreams!
River life on the Magnetawan has included some wilderness exploration and homestead work as of late. I finished my four-day whitewater adventure down the Magnetawan with adventure seekers ‪@TheRealTedBaird‬ ‪@XanderBudnick‬ @MaximBudnick and my dog North. Right off the hop, we portaged around a beautiful waterfall and soon began soloing a demanding whitewater rapid. I caught a nice Northern Pike on a Mepps spoon and before too long we'd made it to our end point at Georgian Bay.
This adventure capped off four trips I'd done in the weeks prior and I hadn't spent much time with my family in recent days. On my return home, my wife Tori and I had our work cut out for us. We planned to grow a large amount of our food this year and preserve it for the winter months. I returned home with a fish fry and then we got to work. We hauled soil, build raised bed gardens, and planted two three sisters gardens of corn, beans, and squash as well as pumpkins, peppers, tomatoes, and more! It felt good to get a lot done before our next adventure...this one with the whole family along.

I didn't think you were going to show us the dump you took on this trip. The last video just seemed to end without the last day of the trip. Not surprised you were a good sport about it. I really enjoyed watching you and Tori getting the garden set up. You grew some amazing vegetables the first year when you were beginners. I'll bet this year, it will be amazing. That slide must look really steep when you're Huddy's size!!

@@JimBairdAdventurer I have been Guiding at Frontier Fishing Lodge (since 2008) which is across from the village of Lutselk'e. I had the opportunity to meet Chummy from Plummers once. The East Arm of Great Slave Lake is a majestic place and the fishing is unlike any other place I have ever fished and it is why I continue to go back there! I grew up hunting and fishing all throughout Northern Ontario in the Temagami area... It was nice to see you and Ted with the Budnick brothers adventuring. Your gardening makes me wish I would have planted this year, but I took it off, now I"m going to try the gardening bags and planting flowers in my veg bag as well. Sweet family.

Should have a good crop come September. Gardens are all in here too. Been really cold on the west end of Lake Superior. Off lake winds everyday for weeks. Seems we have an 80 degree day every week or so since late April to serve as a teaser for real summer. Thanks for the great video. A little of everything. Have a great summer.

Glad you liked it and how I incorporated the planting and family stuff. Here, we can’t really plant before June 1st with the frosts but you are probably further north than is so I imagine you’d have to wait a bit longer. Here’s hoping those winds die down for ya.

@@JimBairdAdventurer North 46 degrees 43 minutes. First week in June for us here too. Near the lake there's much less chance of frost than a few miles inland but the air temp is just a little above lake temp. We've had our peas in the ground in early may. Snow on them doesn't hurt them. Thanks again Jim. I love all your vids.

Love this vid!…nice blend of adventure on the water and adventure on the homestead! Love the 3 Sisters/Maidens method - always great results with my DD… Try ur potatoes in Coffee bags…I get them CHEEP (sometimes free) from my local roaster..roll the bag down like a sock, add soil and straw and unroll/hill the bag as the greens come up with more composted soil and straw….in the fall, when the greens die back - kick over the bag and harvest…everything left (including the bag) is compostable for next year… Keep it up J & T….love your content and really enjoying the gentle shift to the whole fam adventures!

Glad to hear you liked both elements in this one! I’ll definitely share an update on how things are going. In one I did poke beans and the other sugar snap peas. I ended up letting a few of hose pumpkins that started unexpectedly from seeds in my compost stay and planted winter squash in both of them. It’s all coming up now…Exciting stuff!
