Living On A Council Estate To MotoGP - Niall Mackenzie The most requested video on this channel so far has been an interview with my Dad Niall Mackenzie, so I thought I'd take you back to his childhood. How he came all the way from a council estate in Fankerton, Scotland. All the way to racing in 500cc Grand Prix's now commonly known as MotoGP.

Brilliant interview. I remember his first races at Knockhill in the early 80’s winning on his LC350 against the big boys on GSX 1000s in the end of meeting handicap races. Rain or shine he always did it. I remember Jim Anderson who raced for Shirlaws of Aberdeen standing with us and saying that boy is going all the way boys. How right he was. Legend.

Mrs and father in law both read his autobiography and passed it to me, two chapters in and been in stitches. Top man, had the pleasure of chucking my bike into the gravel at Scotsman three mins from the end of the day at one of his track schools. Took the time to make sure I was ok (was wet, just slid, bike wasn’t ok though 🙈😄). A biker as well as a racing legend. 😎

I also remember when your dad n his mum mobed out of fankerton to stoneywood and his mum gave me his dressing table from his bedroom i remember it well the mirror was plastered in racing stickers 😊. I also still to this day have a very large print he gave to the fankerton hut and they were going to throw it out so i took it home and had it framed and kept it to this day. Im sure it was when he just signed with honda. He signed it aswell so i still treasure it to this day 😃

GP years were great watching him especially battling on the Yamaha with Foggy on the Cagiva. I'm also thinking there was an Aprilia 250 ride? Only possible due to his fantastic natural riding ability.

Ah man fab video, would love to see this as a regular feature! Some great stories and memories from a grand prix racing legend! Was on Nialls quiz team years ago at the NEC bike show, and a bit overawed at sitting next to greatness, needless to say he got most questions right, although I think I remember we lost to Whit and Ian Simpson! Keep the videos coming!

Loving the vids Taylor, the perfect antidote to lockdown and some cracking insight into riders views and behind the scenes info that is fascinating to hear. Must agree with everyone, the interview with your Dad was one of the very best so would be great to have this as a regular feature as I'm sure there are hours of stories we'd love to hear. Think a regular Mackenzie round-up through the season would be cool too, and some more Mad Mark would be most welcome when you have time!

Loved this video man, your Dad is a legend, and such a funny and easy guy to interview. I can remember rooting for him back in the eighties and nineties, I and a mate were at Donington 1989 for the British GP, when he was riding for Marlboro Yamaha works team. The moment when he passed, I think Kevin Schwartz for the lead, was amazing, a huge cheer and everybody on their feet. Those were the days.......

Fabulous interview, Taylor - I love listening to all those old stories. I'm a couple of years younger than Niall but I too fondly remember my 50cc Moped days in 1981, aged 16. Also living on a council estate, with not a pot to pi** in, I saved my paper round money, weekly pocket money, Birthday and Christmas money, etc, etc for months and months and months so I could buy a used Yamaha Fizzy. The budget was so tight, I bought my helmet from Argos!! I can't wait for the next interview vid.

Really enjoyed this interview with your dad! He and I are similar ages, so all the talk of sports mopeds (FS1E, AP 50, SS50 etc) took me back to being 16 again, and the great fun those bikes were. Also good to hear him talk about the GP racers of the time! Please do make interviewing him a regular feature on your channel. And good luck with securing enough finance for your own racing ambitions this year!

Thanks Taylor, that was awesome! I first starting getting fit in the '90's. I trained to be a MTB racer. Needless to say, I had plenty of energy left at the end of a roadrace weekend. Altough the racebike was a good bit heavier to throw around...Lolol
