Just my opinion and ONLY an opinion: Take a Sharpie and write on the cans what is inside. Then tear the labels off and discard before you get on the boat. It'll keep little bugs from being stowaways. Good Sailing, my friends!

Hi guys! You are amazing! I am looking for my first sailboat as well, was going through videos on KZbin and came across your series... Wow. So systematic, so helpful and so inspiring!!! It is a second evening today I am doing nothing after work, but watch your videos one-by-one. Did not miss a single episode, since each one shows and teaches something new. Plus, have to give a credit to whoever was editing your footage - it is easy and entertaining to watch. All scenes compiled so well, showing nice views, good angles. One small glitch - sound is very dull on your new camera sometimes. I assume this is when it is used inside a water-tight box. Good luck and keep feeding more of these adventure videos!

That bay area next to the canal and Publix is a good spot to anchor by as you can catch a shuttle to take you around south Beach and you can also walk to Lincoln road.

Tip for ice: Put a cooler within a cooler with newspapers in between for insulation and sealed with tape. Put the ice in a lunchbox or bucket so the surface area of melted ice is dense. Place the lunchbox/bucket of ice in cooler first and place food on top of it. And of course keep it in the shade. If you can, presort food into bags so you don't have to open the cooler more than twice a day; in the morning and evening when its cool outside.

You guys should try some dry ice in the cooler, it will freeze the you know what out of anything touching it but it will keep you cooler very cold for a while.

There are Coolers at CostCo and other stores there are 5 day coolers. Put some dry ice one one side and ice on the other. We used them in summer camping in Arizona and the milk was frozen when we left. The 5 day Coolers work great on boats.

hey, love the videos! ice tip. block ice if you can get it. get a 2nd cooler, even if its a really cheep one..one is main cooler and the other 2nd. transport the ice in a cooler if possible. use 2nd cooler to put the cold water in from main cooler. use this to chill anything you may want to put in the main cooler. works great for a 6 pack too. keep main cooler covered with a blanket or towel. i can make a block of ice last about 4 days with a good cooler.

In Oriental at the grocery store they have block ice and it lasts much longer than bag ice in our cooler. I plan to upgrade to a cold plate at some point in the future. But you are right the more solid the ice mass the longer it will last. As Orange Fish suggested Dry Ice would be an alternative if you can source it. One of my Customers ships food and they use dry ice for perishables. Oh thanks for posting. I have missed your videos.

Such a well behaved dog......wish I could get my Golden Retriever to behave half as well. A couple of thoughts on your ice situation.....Have you tried using blocks of Ice? I find it usually lasts quite a bit longer but of course is more work breaking it up. Also, are you using your ice chest or just the cooler? The Ice Chest usually keeps food colder longer and self drains into the bilge. Next......there are several portable fridges and ice makers on the market. No installation is required. They can run off of shore power when you have such access but what I like is this. If you set up an adapter (think AC adapter like the one in your car) and run it off a switch, (make sure to use the appropriate AMP breaker) you can run your engine for about an hour per day so you do not deplete your batteries and you can make your own ice and also cool the fridge. Good luck and keep the videos coming : )

Was great to see some new videos from you guys :). But I agree with one of the other comments, a small fridge in the end would be much easier to live with than having to manage ice, be it iceblocks/dry ice etc. Look forward to seeing the Bahamas when you can post some of your experiences there. Safe travels and fair winds

Michael Caton I'd say it also can be equally an issue of your food becoming wet and soggy, even in bags. Because the ice melts fast, we only open during meal times, maybe open it like 2 times a day max. So it does melt in between these times.

@Wanderglobe
@Wanderglobe 9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Caton I keep a small 12 volt in my bus that has a few advantages. It's about half the size of a regular cooler so less power consumption and less space. Also the cooling fan is on the top so if you use ice and it melts it won't muck up the fan. Blocks of ice are best but if you have cubes then put them in freezer bags so the water doesn't spoil what's in the cooler and it can be used for drinking when it melts.

A whole meal for 2 for less than $3. And, it takes up very little space. Good luck to you guys. Our paths may cross one day. I just bought a Catalina 30 that I'm retrofitting for blue water cruising. Dude, get a real cooler. Colman makes the extreme ones that keep ice for days. Also don't dump the water out. The water/ice mix keeps much longer. Just put your food in bags to keep dry. Another tip: If your going to be in port for a few days. Ask the manager of the store if you can put jugs in the ice freezer and pick up the next day. A frozen gallon jug will last at least a day and provides cold drinking water!

@joez9839

Can't speak for WS, but we lived aboard for 15 years with critters. Find some plastic containers with positive latches on the lids. Tupperware is just okay, but not great. We stored bags of dry food in a large plastic bins and dished out a week's worth into a smaller container. Keeping the food in their paper bags helped curb moisture damage.

Wicked Salty If you are not planning to drink the melted ice (and are keeping the food in plastic bags) but a jug with sea water on your deck and let the water evaporate and refill it a couple times (make brine). But that salt saturated brine in with the ice and it will last 4x longer. Sounds crazy but SCIENCE! It lowers the melting point of water so the ice lasts longer.

I understand the curiosities in how much things cost because people want to do them to, but when you think about it, it's not that much different then the expenses you need in any day life, food, insurance, taxes etc. It definitely cant be hard if in debt, everyone is in different positions.

Rick Sonntag Dang... that really stinks. It was such a cool little cruiser area but I could see how they thought it may have been getting run down. Good info, I bet that publix dock is still a go maybe?

You guys may want to consider this unit. It is expensive but how much is your time worth constantly running around all day long? Hope this helps.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6O3fpKbaNmSesU

+Patrick Wagz After watching this again, I don't know what's worse the guy and the girl, or the guy scraping the mud off the anchor onto the bow.

I've seen folks do go fund me accounts to help out with their adventures in return for great vids. May be a good consideration for you guys. Especially if you can get a big enough following.
