Living on SSI since 2012 is part of the reason I'm off-grid! Never had a home in my life till now, couldn't afford it, always rented. That is the lesson I try to get thru to young teens and 20 yr olds, to buy property and hang on to it, plant fruit trees and use solar panels for energy.
@PlainVanillaGrandmaCarol4 жыл бұрын
Good advice! I wish I had done that.

@John Dunn you don't know me or anything about me except what was in this thread so you don't have the information you need to make those accusations. Mind your own business and get a life. Apparently you have nothing to do but sit in your mother's basement and troll nice people.

I was so worried about you when you said there was only 19 dollars left from SS. I am so glad you have a little retirement coming in. This series is a great wake up call . Have so much more to say and will on other videos. Thanks for sharing.

If I didn’t have a retirement check obviously I would have to choose food over having an apartment. I read every day about women my age living in their car for exactly this reason. 😳

I just retired age 67. Im 100% social security. Live in a 2 bedroom apt in austin, texas, with my 20 yo granddaughter. rent is 1600. I may have to get a parttime job. Didn't know I have to pay taxes on SS. Still have to get the medicare B which will be ~180.00. Crazy times...
@PlainVanillaGrandmaCarol Жыл бұрын
$1600 for rent! Oh how I wish you could get on a waiting list for a low income apartment. You do not have to pay tax on Social Security unless your income is over $25,000 for a single person or $32,000 for a married couple.

Good video! I have been living on a very low SS check for over a year now. I almost stayed in a bad situation due to thinking I could not afford to live on my own. But once I could not do it any longer I took the chance. I am happier than I have ever been and am now living very frugal. It can be done, you just need to research what kind of resources there are to help you while you get back on your feet. I am a new subscriber. Love Toby!

Hi Deborah, Retirement is wonderful!!!!! Thank you for visiting with me. I am planning a video on my experience with Medicare supplemental drug insurance for my prescriptions. I will try to get that up this weekend. If there is any way to keep your health insurance from your husband’s employer then keep it. I couldn’t keep mine because once I retired my employer stopping paying a portion and it would have almost taken my entire retirement check each month to keep the insurance so before he retires ask about that.

Her rent in a senior building is $120 a month. They have excellent disability transportation for her wheelchair (buses or cabs fitted for wheelchairs). We have often talked about her moving back home, but I live in small town America with very few services for disabled or seniors.

You are a sweet heart and then some! Well done for doing your best to manage life and money matters. I don’t know where you are now but I advise for you to consider streamlining some of your outgoing expenses - i.e. Having one internet service with the ability to connect to all your internet devices. There is extensive room for less expenditure in all of your outgoing expenses - it’s probable that you may be able to not spend at least US $120 - $150 from all your listed expenditure items. Well done either way. xx

Hi! Welcome to my channel.
@PlainVanillaGrandmaCarol3 жыл бұрын
@K Maxx Good morning! It is true you get a smaller amount. Of course if you can wait until you can draw the full amount you have more money. Because of health issues I didn't have a choice. Some people choose to take it at 62 because tomorrow is promised to no one. There are many factors to consider.
@coppingtonfarnham77313 жыл бұрын
Thanks, K Maxx....haven't claimed SS yet. Always thought more checks in the long run, so it evens out, at least to age 77-78. I have a pension, so would combine that with Social Security, which I would use for extras, like home repair, so we don't have to draw much if anything from our nest egg. My wife also has a 401k. We are planning on conserving my wife's SS . She is the higher wage earner, so whichever one of us survives would get the larger check. I still work part-time in Information Technology after retiring from full-time. In 2022 they are planning a major rollout of equipment, with hundreds of computer station replacements. I was around for a similar situation several years ago when I was full-time. Each station replacement requires several trips above and below the desk to deal with wiring not to mention hauling the old and new equipment around the building. I had to use a compressor and blow dust out of hundreds of PC's to prepare them for sale last time too! I'm now prone to back, leg and knee pain I didn't have several years ago, so I'm looking to bail completely....my slogan '21 and done. I'd like to do something to keep active, just not this manual labor. Other issues at play too (long story). I'm also just sick of my employer....been there since 1985!
@wandadraughn11023 жыл бұрын
I had no choice at 62,I had to take early retirement check,due to mobility issues,my check is hundreds less than it would have been if I could have waited till 66.

I’m retired raising my great granddaughter since she was born. She is now 12. I don’t receive any type of assistance for her, except for Medicaid. Thank the lord my home is paid off. I can’t afford to update it, but when something needs repaired I’ve been able to manage that. Since groceries have gone sky high, I shop at Aldi’s. I have a decent income and a pension but it doesn’t go as far as It could if I lived alone. I’m not complaining at all about raising my granddaughter. I don’t buy myself clothes unless it’s absolutely necessary. We do what we have to and I do feel fortunate, as many people are receiving much less then I. God bless you!

Talk to your doctor’s office. Sometimes they get samples of prescription meds that they can pass on to their clients. Especially if they know that you are on a super tight budget! Every little bit helps! Also, if you have a food pantry close by (ish?) they would be an excellent source to help sustain you & more people for you to get to know! Blessings!

Hi Kim, I am sorry I am so late in responding. I just saw your comment today. Yes! Samples are so helpful. I had a psychiatrist once that provided samples of a particular medication that I needed because she knew I would not do as well on the generic. She knew my insurance would only pay for generic so she provided enough samples to get me through a month for a year or two, until she moved away. It was great. A year or so after she moved and I had to go on generics is when I ended up in the hospital because the generics are not exactly the same. 😕

If money is tight and you have the room, you might consider renting out a room. Room rentals in my area are from an average of $600 - $750.. if you own a house with no mortgage and you have room, think about a mini bed and breakfast. Plant and grow some vegetables to relieve the food bill. If you live in an apartment building or a condo that assigns you a parking place and you don't drive, you can rent that space out on a monthly basis.

Like most things, I challenge myself to do well with what I have and can afford. It's not always easy, but I manage. Fortunately I do have an active social life, but I don't mind staying home either, in fact I usually prefer it. Always plenty to do here. I was forced to retire due to medical issues at 59, so I had to pay $700 a month for COBRA health insurance until I was eligible for Social Security. When I first applied for SS at 62, I went into my local SS office. They ran the numbers for me and checked to see whether I would receive more $$ using my OWN history, my husband's OR my ex-husband's. My deceased husband always worked for the county government (since getting out of the Army after Viet Nam) and since the county has a retirement system of its own, county employees don't have SS taken out of their checks - so that went no where, as I knew it would. And, as hard as it was (and is) to believe, my ex (who was self employed) failed to report his true earnings over the decades so that was out of the question too. In the end, I collected on my own earnings and contributions to SS due to the years I worked outside the county; and that amounts to $106 a month after they deduct $90 a month for my supplemental insurance. I'm fortunate to received a modest county pension of my own and half on my deceased husband's or I don't know how I'd make it.

Carol, it would seem to me, you may qualify to have Part B Medicare paid for by Medicaid, if you do Part D which pays for prescriptions would also be free for you. You would then pay only two or three dollars per prescription depending what it is. Also the local hospital will write-off any bill not paid by Medicare. After a hospitalization for five days, after Medicare, and their write-off I owed $60.00 which they did not cover for some reason. This applies to anyone who lives on less than $40.000, a year and does not own property. A car does not count, and you are allowed other items to a specific value determined by them. I buy dog kibble at Costco, Kirkland salmon kind. Then, I mix brown rice, frozen peas and carrots and ground turkey from Grocery Outlet. I sprinkle powdered probiotics on it and serve with a little egg or cottage cheese. A box of 24 plastic containers of ready made dog dinners for small dogs costs $27.00 plus tax, it costs me $7.00 and takes a few minutes to prepare, without preservatives, which is healthier for my dog. He weigh 18lbs, I freeze the mixture of rice, veggies and meat in 1Cup freezer bags and feed him two meals a day. This lasts him several weeks, generally three or four, and he likes the juice it makes.

I don't know what size place you live in but if there is not help from your city then let's look to the state to see what they offer. I know someone here who gets about that much but she gets most of her rent paid by HUD, food stamps, medical help by being on Medicaid. After all the help she gets she seems to do fine as far as having necessities covered. If there is a Sr. Citizen's center where you live then ask them for any information about help for you. If your city has a health department contact them and ask the same thing. See if your city, county, state has a department of caring for the aging. Ask your Dr. if they have any information. Is there a United Way office where you live? They should have info. If there is a public health office where you are check with them. If you are comfortable talking to a Minister they probably have information. If you are still caring for your special needs son then I hope you are getting every bit of help you can for his care. Firstly, I would like to address your tithing! Bravo! I love that! God is good and faithful! Our library has free admission to museums, gardens etc. There is also an organization that drives people to grocery shop, doctor appointments etc. It's called Neighbors Who Care. Maybe there is something like that where you live? Do you bundle your insurance? Sometimes you can get a break on that. AARP has insurance etc. I bought an electric trimmer, nail grinder and tweezers to groom my dog. All together it was $50. Each time I take my dog for grooming it is $90. It took a little time, but I'm saving a ton on grooming expenses for my cockapoo. Have you thought about checking out watching another dog? I pay a neighbor to watch my dog $25 a day, some people charge more. A little side hustle might help. God bless you and your daughter.

The organization that can drive you to apps is fabulous We have a program like that through our senior center and I have used it in the past after having surgery for Dr, apps. I had an Uber once and it was really expensive.

Hi Carol! I heard what you said your SS amount is, but didn’t hear your pension amount. Of course if you don’t want to share the amount I totally understand! 😉. I’m facing retirement soon, I’m going on 69 years old. Trying to make ends meet. Thank you!
@PlainVanillaGrandmaCarol4 жыл бұрын
I understand making ends meet. My retirement check is several hundred less than my Social Security check. I didn't give the amount because I wanted the focus of my video to be on this is how much you might get from Social Security and point out what all mine won't cover. I hope everyone makes a list of all there normal expenditures and see how much will be covered by their Social Security. I have never heard anyone say that they have a lot of money left over.

Hi Karen, How are you In? In my area the only provider to my apartment building is Suddenlink but I recently bundled my cell and internet and pay a whole lot less that way.

I’m starting a Roth IRA at the end of this year because I’m 33 and both my parents are almost 60 - they are separated but they struggle now and neither of them saved for retirement. My dad will only get 766 in 3 years every month if he needed to retire so he will continue to work as long as he can. My mom is in disability she rents a room for most of her check and she can’t afford a place of her own. She only gets 1025 and her rent is 700. She can’t afford all of her bills. Also she never saved for retirement. With high rent in my area the lists are very long or closed for low income or income based units. 2-6 year long lists! What do you do if your homeless? Live in your car?
@PlainVanillaGrandmaCarol2 жыл бұрын
You would not believe the number of senior citizens that are forced to live in a vehicle. I watch Glorious Life on Wheels. Her name is Carol and she often interviews women who have to live in a car or van. I watch Lindy and Lovie. I think she is 74, lives in a van and works at Walmart. That is how I ended up on KZbin... I was searching for information on what to do when I no longer can afford rent. I'm so glad you are saving up for retirement. Make sure you never stop saving. Good luck to your parents. Many of the women I have learned about living in vehicles get around $600-$700 a month. It just doesn't go very far. 😥

Good morning! Welcome to my channel. ☺️The smartest thing you can do is have no debt! You have a good head on your shoulders. Thank you for visiting with me today. 🌱🌹🍃🌹🌱

That is one of the smartest things you can do! Rent and house payments often eat up most of the social security/retirement funds so without it you’re creating a space for wiggle room in the budget. 🤗 If you have a paid off house then rent essentially is never more than taxes, which is much lower than actually renting anywhere. It’ll be a very exciting day when you get it paid off. I am rooting for you! 💕
@8ofwands3003 жыл бұрын
@@aqueen13 true but even a paid-off home doesn't mean your home is " free"...property taxes, home maintenance and - if you're in a condo - monthly HOA fees. I've owned my condo for 15 years, and I pay $ 700 a month in taxes, home owner's insurance and common fees. 😕. Plus I'll need to replace my furnace soon which will cost upwards of $15,000. Some days I think it might be more economical for me to rent - then at least I'm not responsible for maintenance.
@aqueen133 жыл бұрын
@@8ofwands300 true... there are definitely unexpected expenses that come with home ownership and if it’s an hoa the fees can be pretty steep. This is one of the reasons I am looking into multi-gen housing or places with mother in law apartments.

15000 is high for a condo furnace. Better do some research and get quotes from other companies.

we have to live on my VA pension......so i get it! with God's help...we've been able to pay off our house so it's a bit easier for us and we can travel too now that we've been saving up for a while.....hi Toby! :) we have to enroll in medicare next year....not looking forward to it....:( we prob won't be getting any $ from SS because we haven't been working for 10 years and my wife has not been working to take care of me....our car and home ins takes a big chunk out of our budget.....thankfully, i get my rx and doctor visit free at the VA hospital...we do have to drive 3 hours to get to it though....sounds like you really are frugal.... good video!

Mark, First of all thank you for your service in the military. I appreciate your contribution to keeping us safe and free. Thank God for the VA. My ex-husband has VA benefits and his medical care has actually been wonderful but without the VA it would’ve been pretty bad. Go to Social Security.gov make sure it’s.gov and you can sign up to for A “my Social Security” account. On your my Social Security account you can get an estimate of what you will be getting and Social Security benefits. Please check it out so you’ll know if you’re going to get anything. Also you can see your income for every year you worked. it’s a good idea to go and check that and make sure there aren’t any mistakes because if you paid into Social Security either deserve to get it. If you aren’t going to get any Social Security I don’t know that they can make you enroll in Medicare because they charge you 135.50 per person a month.
@PlainVanillaGrandmaCarol4 жыл бұрын
Also have your wife set up a my Social Security account. if you’ve been married I think it is 12 years or longer then she can draw Social Security on what you paid in, if you ever paid in anything Social Security. I am going to double Check this information but I recently was told even if you were divorced like I am if your ex spouse served in the military then you are also eligible for VA benefits so it might be that your wife can get medical care from the VA. I hope that’s true I’m going to investigate it and tell everybody about that in another video.
@PlainVanillaGrandmaCarol4 жыл бұрын
It only makes sense to me that if divorced spouses can get VA benefits then surely if you’re still married she could get VA benefits.
@PlainVanillaGrandmaCarol4 жыл бұрын
It is me AGAIN! If you never paid in to Social Security but your wife did at any time in her life then you should be able to draw on her Social Security just like she could draw on yours. If a spouse draws Social Security on their spouse's contribution it does not affect what that person gets. I hope this is not as plain as mud!
