the "holes" in the rocks are actually from grinding corn into flour. Dordogne (sp) also has very old cave art - prehistoric - It was open to the public to tour, but the breathing molded the cave walls, so that stopped.

Wow! We tried to visit a couple of those cave art locations but weren’t successful. So the “holes” were for grinding flour, that makes perfect sense! Thanks! They had corn in ancient France? Wasn’t corn from the Americas?
