I am living the American Dream in Japan. These are a few things I did in live to succeed.
Welcome to our channel, where we share our journey of restoring a traditional Japanese minka, which we bought as a cheap abandoned house in the picturesque countryside of Japan. Join us as we breathe new life into this former akiya, exploring the beauty of traditional architecture and the challenges of renovating a house in Japan.
As foreigners living in Japan, we've embraced the opportunity to restore this minka, a symbol of Japan's rich cultural heritage. Learn about the craftsmanship involved in minka construction, from bamboo and earth to straw, and discover how these materials create a harmonious living space.
Our journey began with purchasing this akiya for 5 million yen (approximately $35,000 USD), including not just the minka but also a guest house, storage building, and a generous plot of land with trees. We'll share tips and insights into the challenges and rewards of renovating a traditional Japanese house in the countryside, showcasing the unique blend of history and modern living.
Whether you're a fellow renovator, a lover of Japanese culture, or simply curious about life in rural Japan, our channel has something for you. Subscribe to follow our progress, get renovation tips, and immerse yourself in the charm of traditional Japanese architecture. Let's embark on this journey together and rediscover the beauty of a bygone era, right in the heart of Japan's countryside.

Hi your video popped up 😊 In this video we have much in common. I served 23 years between the Marines and Army. I joined when I was 20...now retired with all the government benefits. I saw that you were deployed to Afghanistan....I was there in 03/04 at the Kandahar Airfield. I'm 61 and my plan is to visit Japan late September. Who knows I might find an Akiya in the country side 😊

That's very cool! I was in Kandahar for a year from May 2005 to May 2006 right there on the airfield too. I ran the avionics shop and staged multiple 189 vans along the bombed up hangar. Boy there were some hot and dusty days over there weren't right? I was in the Army for 22 years, GS for 11 and now contractor. Overseas we have the 5 year rule for GS and I was not about to give up what I have going on here. Life is good here...hope you do find a cool place!

is it possible to retire there without a work visa? what is a good guide? I'm over 50 and would just like an akiya in rural Japan.

Hi not that I know of first hand. However a viewer just commented that if you have $3,000 of income such as pension, you can get a visa. I am just not sure.

Are you and your family learning Japanese and connecting with the community? Are you planning on staying there for decade(s)? I'm worried a lot of Americans moving to Japan right now will import the 'flipping' model to the properties. That said, great breakdown of the planning done to get to this point. Ganbatte!

Thanks for watching. My wife is Japanese. I study the best I can, but still not proficient. Not sure if the Japanese market is ideal for flipping. My concern is people coming for a good deal and later abandoning the property again.

I just want to share you that there is always love, hope, forgiveness of sins and eternal life in Jesus. If you come to Him with a sincere and humble repented heart, He can save you and forgive you and give you abundance of joy, love and peace and eternal life. Believe in Jesus: He is The Son of God, He died for our sins and He rose from the dead, Believe in Jesus. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” -Romans 10:9 Repent and Believe in Jesus.
