I recognize myselft. :) Back in 1996 I was 23 and bought my first car, an MGB Roadster. I have had it for 20 years this year, and this year it celebrates it's 50 years birthday. (I am 42 now). Back in 1996 I was the youngest MG owner in Norway. When I called to get insurance they didnt believe it when I told them what kind of car I wanted to insure.

I have a 1965 MGB GT and you forgot one positive of this car, all parts are available and not expensive, and these cars if properly cared for, only gains in value. I bought mine in South Africa where I visit every 2 years , for 30,000 rand now 6 years later its value is estimated at 65,000 try that with your modern car haha

I hv been with my 1979 MGB roadster for 14 yrs now , and it's my daily driver in cuthroat traffic of Hong Kong.Possible but one must be very devoted. Everything can breakdown but the good side is there spares are readily available thru internet. I have now bought my MGB to Australia, traffic is light and to my mgb ...its a piece of cake.

I respect your choice of a daily driver. I, myself, don't own any car newer than 30 years old. Right now, I own a 1985 Reliant Rialto II, a 1972 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, and looking at a 1959 Edsel Corsair. These classic cars, unlike modern cars, have so much personality, and are fun to drive. Not to mention the joy of cutting off for the day, and slipping into a rolling escape from the mundane. Perhaps it is just sentiment, but, I also love the idea of giving a classic car life, and continuing an individual car's story into the present (all while giving a finger to the notion of garaged and undriven collector cars).

Personally I just own a "classic" car for the sole reason of simplicity. I mean a Silver Phantom I assume still has most of the useless modern features all cars have nowdays. Not the case with mine, though. No electric window motors, no power steering, no ABS, no central lock ( And it's a 4-door sedan, pretty much a pain to lock all the doors on it), not even fuel injection. The most modern thing it has on it are servo brakes.

I have a 1973 MGB which I have driven everyday for over 13 years, rain or shine, and I love it. It gets peoples attention wherever I go and it hasn't cost anymore to drive or keep up than any other car I've owned. I owned a Toyota Corolla for five years and only got one compliment in all that time ....my MGB gets at least three or four a week. It gets 25 plus mpg on the freeway (4 speed) and 18mpg in the city. No power steering, no power brakes, no power anything....just you and the road and that's what driving a classic car is all about: it's not just about getting from A to B but, how you get there.

Hey howdy hey! Just another 17 year old here just commenting that I am loving all of this young guy classic car attention that seems to be happening recently. Personally, I am driving a 1962 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk. Saved up $15,000 for her over a period of 7 years and I am not regretting it one bit so far. I am now considering a 4 door sedan stablemate but I can't decide between a 1956 Studebaker President or ANY TRIM 1959 Pontiac. Oh it does sting to be a teenager in love!

The B GT is my favorite British automobile of all time. I will eventually own one before I die. I’m 72+ now so I guessIll have to get my butt in gear. I’ll have to get over my current daily driver first. Now it’s a 2002 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro that I just restored to pretty much stock.

Nice video! It also goes to prove how all MGB's are different from each other. Mine is a '79 roadster and I also use it as a daily driver, but I never had a break down (yet). Sure, maintenance is an ongoing process to keep everything in top condition but I actually trust mine to get to work in time. Also, fuel consumption for mine is pretty close to 30-35MPG depending on traffic. Main drawback of mine is that the roof of roadster leaks, a lot. Even with the roof up, I do arrive on work with wet trousers when it rains...

They are very reliable if you look after them. My BMW was always packing up and even when it was rigged up to a fault finder it couldn't be found . Your springs are ok , again on my BMW both coil springs were broken at the back and a new alternator on an X5 is £600 !! MGBs come from an era when men worked on them and fixed things themselves Calling the AA for a puncture was unheard of.

nice!...you are a car guy...my step dad had a (not sure about this) triumph, tr7? spitfire that was from about 1976 with a 4 cyl 4 speed and a convertible top...i absolutely loved that car, not because it was super fast but it cornered really well...i remember taking hairpin corers at 60 mph in that car... i truly regret not taking that car out while i had the chance, yes i was only ten years old in 1980 when we had this car but if i were to get one today i really couldn't flog it like my step dad did back then and thats why i love the sound of a 4 cylinder engine way more than a v6 and almost as much as a v8

I just found an MG Midget soft top yesterday for $3,300. What a deal! very well maintained too. I went to British car day last year and I hope to be part of it this up coming year. This video was pretty helpful and I hope to enjoy this MG as much as you enjoy yours.

I have two classic cars that I use as daily drivers. One is a '69 MGB GT, and the other is a '69 Dodge Charger. I decide which one I drive to work, as I'm walking up to them in the morning. They may not have the modern conveniences that newer cars have, but I don't care. I like driving them, and I like the way they look. Some people treat cars like an appliance. They just use them to get from A to B. Not me. They are my only cars. Both are very reliable, actually, which I think is because they are used frequently, not sitting around for months, dripping out their fluids. It would be nice if the MG was faster, but if I want power, I take the Dodge. Milage is not great: the MG, probably around 20 mpg, but the Charger is horrid, at about 8 mpg. 4:10 rear gears are great for acceleration, but murder on gas!

I never realised how many others use their classic cars as daily runners until i did the same. The thing that makes it so appealing to me is the character that they are full of. I am yet to find a modern car that feels like it has any character which is a shame.

I've had a MGB GT LE, for 6 years, properly maintained they are as reliable as anything on the road. I've driven it to Perpignan and back with no problems and got 27.6 mpg, using lead replacement additive. Love it.

I daily drive a 1980 Celica, and while it is very reliable, I can relate to basically all of your other points. It's my first and only car, it's fun, different, a great conversation starter, many of my friends recognise my car almost as a part of my personality. And I have still learnt a lot working on it. Oh, and I wish my fuel economy was that good. I get 12L/100km from the 2L 4cyl, which equates to 19mpg...

Got me a 1989 Mazda RX-7 FC turbo II this summer. I have cushion cars my parents own if this one goes bad. I've had it for quarter of a year now and it already survived the long trip from Germany to Norway when I went to get it. Has't let me down yet. Had no major maintenance done. Only premix at fuel ups. Premixing helps smooth gearing I feel after each fuel up.

my second car was a '72 BGT I drove in high school, you love them and hate them but always fun to drive. you will as you say get something better but always keep her. my daily driver is a '14 Mustang GT Premium vert with 6 speed manual... like the MG fun as all get out but soooo much faster:). safety fast!

I have 2 classic vehicles I use: a 1957 4 door bel air sedan, and a volkswagen bus from the 60s I got back in 80. My wife drives a 2008 beetle in a blue paint job.

Enjoyed the video! Looking for one of these at the moment which ticks all the boxes for me really. Better MPG than my Series Land Rover, much faster, very cheap insurance, free tax, easy to maintain etc.. I've given up on soulless modern cars, life is too short to drive boring.. The good news is that classics get better with age and regular use, you find and cure the bugs. I suppose the best bit about classic ownership for me has been the social side of it - just brilliant.

like many older vehicles, it's designed to be worked on, back when they were new a lot more people would maintain their vehicles themselves and yes they may have smaller service intervals than newer vehicles but there are a lot more ''maintenance free'' systems now, however i've found that often means more catastrophic failures in service life because they don't get checked over as often. now I don't yet have a car or car license, but i do have a full motorbike license and ride an '82 250 superdream all year round (don't knock it, it's better than all the rumors and costs me less than £200 to insure, tax and MOT it for a year :P ) and have worked on a variety of vehicles, including a couple of tanks

Things like this make every journey an adventure - you feel like a hero doing 50-60mph on an A road, the need to be sympathetic to the mechanicals creates a bond with the vehicle and also makes it more than just a means to get from A to B. You’ll take it out just for the sake of driving, unlike a Kia or Hyundai. Fuel mileage may be worse, but parts are generally cheaper, they’re easier to fix, there is also the car tax and MOt saving each year… if you like cars for the sake of cars, you’ll learn about driving without relying on computers to do it for you, about grip vs handling and enough about maintenance to ensure you’re never ripped off at a garage again. And, most of all, they make you smile, so every commute is an excuse to drive it, as opposed to a penance.

I drive my 71 fiat as my driver,I have Much newer cars but I like you with your dads car only drive them on trips and such and at least in my experience unless the cars brand new,I drive old.its cheaper for me to fix my fiat or my old Chevy then it is to fix like the 2004 Lexus rx300?I had got used as well as an Audi TT,06 Silverado I had. All had less then 100,000 miles on them when I got them and all seemed to be around $500 us to fix,well just about anything. My fiat,water pump $25 shipped, rebuild kit for the distributor was about the most expensive thing I've had to get so far and that was only $200 us. They did always get me home but they also broke down almost as much. And fixing newer cars sucks lol all the plastic that has to come off 1st,specialty dealer only tools that are marked up 1000% to the people that want to do the work them selves. What a nightmare lol so I guess what I'm getting at is when you go for a new car,do just that and go new! Beautiful car,and a nice video

One thing people forget about the cost of running a car is depreciation. It is the main expense, but not for you! Also you're saving on the tax and probably insurance, plus you can save on the running costs by servicing it yourself and the parts will be cheaper than a modern. You're also helping the environment by keeping an old car on the road rather than building new ones which will probably be scrap in 10 years time. My first car was an MG midget! ;o)

ur living my life but i have a 1977 toyota a little advice make the cars fuel economy alot better by putting a carburetor from a similar size engine that had amazing fuel economy (doesnt matter what make as long as its 1.8litre like yours) its not all that hard work

My first car was a 2007 VW Passat, which is a 'good', typical, but boring car. My second car is a 1987 Porsche 3.2 Carrera. 28 years old car when I got it, and it makes the ownership of a car meaningful. Sadly since I was not rich and it was the cheapest from Ebay so it is now in a poor condition, I had to put it off-road and fix it myself. Now restoring this car become the best part of my life, and it teaches me so much about car that my degree of car engine become meaningless. I hope I can complete the restoration by mid next year and make it a daily drive.

I've just passed my driving test and i'm 17. I have been in love with the MGB GT for ages and would love to have it as my first car but i don't know how i can finance it. Have you got any advice? Also would love to see more videos with your MG :)

I'm not familiar with finance schemes, however I don't reckon buying the car will be any worse than buying a typical 'first car'.

The better question is: How much can you repair by your own? Cause driving to a garage with every small problem will get very soon really very expensive! And today you must even search a garage that still excepts classic cars, most of the new mechanics don't know nothing about their old technique. It will be *your* task to learn *everything* about an MGB GT. But as long as you aren't totally untalented you can learn it, no doubt about that---the technology is rather simple! Nevertheless, the most important thing concerning owning a vintage car is the membership in a really good automobile association and a trunk full of spare parts, cause the mechanic of the automobile association don't have nothing in his car for your special trouble, he's mostly equipped only for modern cars with modern probs. Understandable, but bugging. Btw., I can understand you pretty well! As a very young kid I'd fallen in love with a Triumph roadster, a Dinky Toy, very deeply! When I got 38 years old finally I bought her, an aged patient of mine sold me his---over thirty years old with just some 10,000 mls on her clock, 1st-hand, a real beauty! That was in 1998. And till today I haven't regretted that for only one wee little moment, I stll love my old _"Coventry Kitten"_ very much! But what appeals me the most is a little brass tag rivetted to her engine telling everyone _"This motor was assembled by John Browne in September of 1967."_ Just cute, and this man will be never forgotten as long as this car will live ...

Max Downton It depends on how handy you are! Spare part for classic British cars are astonishingly cheap and you'll get almost everything---though manybe you'll have to wait quite a while for them! The British Motor Heritage Trust has bought every machinery and every tool of every old British car, but it waits some time to create a small edition of new "old" parts. For the right indoor handle I had to wait 9 months! But the fact is, some time you will get it for sure---and cheap! That advantage--and it does be an advantage comparing buying used spare parts, in reality better junk, from "enthusiast" for much money---only British classic cars are able to offer. And the old technique is really very simple. Iif you can mend a motorbike you can repair an old British sports car, she ain't a diva like contemporary Italian sports cars with a carb for every cylinder and special, really expensive spark plugs and so on. My old Alfa Romeo Spider 1300 Junior I owned as a university student did need over 3 gallons of motor oil for one simple lube change, no kidding! On the other hand the predecessor of my Triumph's modest engine was originally from a 1948 farm tractor, a Massey Ferguson, the later on so famous wet liner. As I was still a school-boy I inherted a Ford Escort Mk. II RS1800, a rally car, but I could afford it. cause that was pretty simple technique too, though her engine was a very sophisticated Cosworth DOHC with 16 valves and 4 carbs. Ok, I wasn't able to maintain that engine, but at least the rest of the car, and I was getting a half-orphan's pension for insurance, texes and that engine . . .

Congrats on passing your test :) I advise you research online MG forums for the usual pitfalls. Suffice to say If you buy one in UK, then keep it dry stored when not driving it, or at least under a lean-to. MG/ BGT's don't like water :)

It's broken down a few times, but it's always a cheap, simple fix. I use it throughout the year. Have driven it in light snow too.

I own an MG Midget and live in Houston Texas. No in this environment it's defiantly not practical as a daily driver.

Don't think your environment is worse than HK. Hot humid summers. Endless traffic jams. Time racing taxi and lorry drivers you name it! But the MG will survive, but not those weekend MGs! People driving normal cars will hate jams, but classic lovers the reverse as they enjoy the look of other motorists driving their boring boxes with envy on their faces!
