I’ll think of number 6 in a mo - but a couple of bonuses for you from the 80’s. Went to see a Renault 5 GT turbo - trader said, ‘it's great, goes really well - it just don’t Turbo that’s all’. Topped by - ‘it’s had 1 careful owner - he was a Dutch man - name of Hertz Van Rental’ 🤣🤣🤣

IMO, there IS a statistical correlation between number of owners and the condition of a car. (Depends on car type and age, but generally a 20 year old car with 3 owners WILL be better than one with 9 owners.....) 😁
@whichwasher2007
@whichwasher2007 5 ай бұрын
Not true at all. My 21 year old car has 8 previous owners. Yes I'm the 9th one. And it's all dependent on what type of car it is. My van was 8 years old with lower milage when I bought it with just 2 previous owners. Its still not running right. As previous owner had it parked up for 2 years due to lack of work due to the C19vid. My old suzuki GV was 15 years old with full stamped history with 3 previous owners and ran perfect. Its now onto its 5th owner. Owner 1 from new to 2010. Owner 2 from 10- 22. Owner 3. From May 2022 to October 2022 (3dr to small for them). Me from October 2022 to December 2023 (stop gap while my other car awaited major repairs)

I agree - particularly with performance cars. When they've passed through numerous owners it's often because people buy them and can't afford to run them, therefore they've probably been poorly maintained. Obviously, the history is key, but the history is usually a lot clearer with a one or two owner car. Dealers always tell you it doesn't matter when a cars had multiple oeners, but will never hesitate to use it as a selling point when it's a one owner 😂.

I bought a low mileage VW and everyone said I'd paid too much but when the EGR valve went just 3 weeks later I was so glad I had a warranty when the garage picked up the tab for a £1200 bill. Low mileage cars can be troublesome as diesels aren't meant to be used on school runs and supermarket trips......go for a higher mileage one that's been used for it's intended purpose , motorway mile munching 👍 Someone mentioned avoiding cars with mismatched tyres.....don't overthink this one guys. Replaced all the tyres on mine at purchase to Bridgestone Turanzo's....super grippy in the wet so aquaplaning not an issue.....being a front wheel drive the front tyres take acceleration stress , steering and engine load so wear much quicker. At the MOT these needed replacing but the main dealer only had Falkons they reassured me were just as good as the Bridgestones.....first change. Then a puncture in the rear that was unrepairable meant a second change and me running 3 different brands....I opted to do this as the tread depth on the other 3 tyres didn't justify a full reboot. I do intend on replacing all these tyres once I've had some wear out of them for some All Seasons all round.....does me having 3 brands on the car make me cheap ? I think not 🤣

Mismatched tyres seriously affect handling of the car and even its braking performance. It's downright dangerous to use mismatched tyres so I would never buy a car that has that. It tells me all I need to know about the previous owner. When you have a puncture you replace two tyres unless the punctured one was brand new - and you replace with the same type of tyre. If the same type of tyre is nowhere available - then tough luck, you replace all four.
@ltgltd4228
@ltgltd4228 3 ай бұрын
@@totuudentorvi7781If you're ever trying to persuade someone who won't spend the money, some points: mismatched at the rear doesn't affect braking performance as much as at the front. Biggest danger of mismatch is mismatched season types or tread depths. Two summer tyres in same price range with same tread depth are going to perform similarly. I had girlfriend who put on cheapest £30 tyre every time, and even replacing just one front tyre with a Rainsport the car got so much better at not aquaplaning, and at braking in the rain; despite what logic would say, it didn't pull to one side when braking, thanks to ABS/ESC and generally light steering feel, but it did already transmit the feel of the road better and pull the car to a halt quicker. If the person is the type to only replace tyres when failed an MoT, the sharkskin tread lining on the Rainsport works leagues better when at lower tread depths (found this out when bad tracking caused me to have 4mm outer with 1mm inner on both fronts, and it finally started to perform slightly less causing me to discover the culprit. I wouldn't recommend mixing summer and winter ever, completely different compound hardness/flex affects how ABS operates in the dry, never mind the obvious dangers in the snow!

And that's a big part of the dynamic to remember: the potential customer is considering buying what might be the most expensive thing they are going to buy all year, maybe even ever. They are possibly pushing themself to the upper edge of what they can realistically afford. It's also a deal that they will have to live with the consequences of for some time, potentially years. It's probably a big event to them. For the salesperson, it's just another Tuesday.

I totally sympathise. I've bought every car I've ever owned from independent dealers and I have had zero problems. Even new vehicles aren't perfect (I've bought plenty of those, too) and if you're buying a used vehicle, well... It's been used. Get over it. Know what you're buying. Know that dealers are making a profit from it. And accept it. They're providing a service: You want to trade-in. They do it. You want some come back. They provide it. They're not out to rip you off. Business should be mutually beneficial: Car dealers (mostly) aim to give you what you want and make a living out of it. It's a two way street. Don't be unreasonable.

"One owner" can be a blessing or a curse, it all comes down to the owner. Some owners just ruin cars, so the longer they own it, the worse it becomes. You make a good point, 10 enthusiast owners who love their vehicle for a year each, makes a better buy than one disinterested owner who's had it for 10. For example, have never sold a car in worse condition than when I've bought it, because I appreciate cars and respect the engineering, designing, and production techniques that go in to producing them. Buying a car is fun. Selling a car is not fun.

The simple fact is that people are much more likely to sell a troublesome car than a good, reliable one. Therefore the more times a car is sold the more likely it is that the reason for it is trouble.

Interesting video. To answer your question why people who say 'no rush' then hassle you to have the car ready quickly. I'm a psychotherapist, and my hunch is this is about primary and secondary defences (a psychoanalyst called Kohut wrote about this). In other words, on some level of consciousness, the first defence is 'I want that car quickly' and this defends the person against the difficulty in tolerating frustration. This drive can be at a deeper level of consciousness so they may not even be aware of it. However, this urgency can seem demanding and unreasonable to them, so their secondary defence kicks in to defend them against that, and so they say 'no rush' - but this of course disguises their true motive 'I want that car NOW!'. Anyway, that's my stab at it, with posthumous thanks to Kohut. Love the video, have subscribed.

first thing to do when looking at a car from a dealer is check that dealer out online. a good dealer will have a good rep, sure there will be bad reports from disgruntled buyers, but then some people will give a bad report if the cars not sold with a full tank of motion potion. I find it easier to simply send an email asking will they fix any MAJOR issues if they occur. the reply email is the best warranty you can have. a hidden/masked fault wont last the 3 months you get warranty, so if somethings going to fail it will fail pretty quick. stuff you can expect to fix yourself are usually windscreen wipers, bulbs ,wheel balance and tracking ,oil change and a really good valet. best advice is research the car, like the merc c class rear subframe issues, i learned that one the hard way.

Sadly today clocking cars is far more common. The rise of people getting cars through finance deals that restrict their mileage means people often get mileage "adjustment" companies in to adjust their mileage before service and MOTs so nobody knows it has ever been done. This way they can not pay for excess mileage and keep their costs to a minimum. There are hundreds of companies in the UK that will do this for you at your house and wherever for as little as 50 notes. You can also find videos of how to get the right kit to do it yourself on KZbin....

As a customer I ask annoying questions you mentioned above. Not for malicious reasons but because you’re not simple buying a car you’re building a potential long term relationship. If you click (feel respected) with the dealer and feel they are interested in you as a customer highly likely I’ll use them for my services, repairs and then future upgrading to next car. Once I find a good dealer I’m loyal. My bad experiences have always been with with dealerships. Recently I was ready to purchase next car and went to three main dealers and all showed little to no interest. Ended up going to an independent dealer and had fantastic experience and bought one of their cars.

Interesting points around the number of previous owners. I’d argue though that more previous owners increases the statistical probability of at least one of them having not looked after the vehicle. Factoring in one of the reasons you give for folks getting rid of their car (not being able to afford the running costs), you’re then presented with the issue of the car having been run on a shoe string for consumables and maintenance… I do agree though that a ‘one owner car’ isn’t always the holy grail it’s made out to be, for example if it’s a Nissan Juke that’s been used since new as a school-run/supermarket car, neglected and considered a means-to-an-end rather than something to look after and cherish.

Fuel economy is the one thing that I always research, along with road tax. My V50 1.6D estate is £20 a year. 55 mpg. Over 8 years I have paid £160 in tax. Most other cars are £200, so I would have spent £1600. £300 would be £2400. When it comes down to running costs tax can form a huge part of the cost of owning the car.

How many owners is definitely a totally normal question - it doesn’t mean I think it’s bad at all if it’s had lots of owners - but if there is a nice car and then I find out it’s a 1 owner car then that’s a bonus. If I’m going to buy a car I’d like to know how many owners it’s had - it’s just a factor to consider that’s all.

I understand why some buyers ask those questions as when you pay over a certain amount, you expect a degree of trouble free motoring. I always like to know whether it's been a Hire Car or a Taxi. I would hate to buy either, especially a Hire Car as I've driven many and treat and drive them like I've just stole it. I've just spent 15K on a Passat R-Line Diesel and it has a few electrical Gremlins like offside DRL not working and the Offside Rear door not locking. Company I bought it off, have it booked in tomorrow, to fix both with no qualms. Providing a courtesy car too while they fix it. As long as it is sorted I have no issue.

Hi..I would argue the 'how many owners' .As someone who has had performance cars for decades I am and have been put off by performance cars with 10000 miles which have had 6 owners..! Has it been tracked by different people at different levels of skill and driving ability...etc etc..I think a lot of the other questions you quote are just breaking the ice between the customer and the dealer and so are said automatically..for example to talk about the car appears more realistic than asking you what you bought at your local Tesco with your nan last weekend...

Nice video. The "how many owners?", should strictly be "How many keepers?" as this is what the V5 records. It could be a family owned car passed down through three siblings, but only actually owned by one person. However, I digress; If a car is 3yrs old with seven keepers it might raise a red flag with me, but 15yrs old with seven keepers, not so much.

Yet you want our money to keep in YOU in business. Just listen to the buyer and deal with it. Its part of the trade. All we want is a genuine car. A dodgy trader will sell you a car for the sake of selling . Ive dealt with some awful businessmen, tricky traders. I've even put myself in trouble once or twice to teach traders a lesson. You should only sell items that you would buy yourself. Sorry for the rant. Lol

For 3 - I think people think a car that’s changed hands a lot meant the people who owned it hated it 😂 but it’s so much more than that. Certain cars, like a little sporty number (coupes, convertibles etc ) are often changed as people’s needs change like they have a family, or those 6ft 4 men get fed up of folding themselves in half and hurting their backs **Jeremy Clarkson springs to mind** kids grow up so parents don’t need the big people carrier, or maybe the little hatchback is too little now. There are so many reasons and few reflect on the car

Often when I am looking for a new-second-hand car, I will have identified a few that I would consider via an internet search, and they won't always come from the same dealer. So, I have truthfully said "I have another one to look at." On several occasions, I have gone back later and bought the car I looked at before the "other one". I've also even called up dealers and told them that I was no longer interested in their car that I looked at because I bought the "other one" instead. So, sometimes, it isn't just a polite lie for the potential customer to extract themself from the conversation; it might actually be true. So, your guarantee that you will never hear from the person isn't cast-iron. ;)

Cash isn’t king for the reasons mentioned but also because the dealer then won’t get a kickback from the HP provider. How much is it to insure is a silly question. Period. How many owners is a silly question, it’s irrelevant, the service history matters much more. How much without a warranty is only relevant if an extra or extended warranty has been offered. Where did it come from, silly question, doesn’t matter if it came from the moon, condition and service history are far more important. Never say “there’s no rush”, it’s likely they’ll believe you and you won’t see your vehicle for weeks!. Why is the mileage so low?, because it hasn’t been driven much or it’s been clocked at some time In it’s life, check the MOT history for clues (free online) or do a basic HPI check for £5 I’ve got another one to look at = your car is too expensive. Refundable deposit isn’t a deposit. It won’t break down will it is a silly question.
