Been through hell and back, started on a 125 and went 600cc 5 years ago. Still have no intention of getting a car. Here's what I have plus a few thoughts. Cheap stuff is not good! A sport bike hurts so definitely choose a more upright positioned bike for commuting and touring. My gear now as an all year rider: Full RST weather adaptable and very waterproof textile suit. A good Helmet (Shark) which is quiet, has a max view visor and pinlock insert (though fog is still a major issue in the coldest months despite any pinlock I've ever had). A SENA Bluetooth headset pair for good communication between rider and pillion and listening to SAT Nav. A mount for a phone for use as sat nav. Helmet cam for insurance purposes. Good quality large top box (GIVI in my case). Heated grip to save you crying in the winter (Engine as a hand warmer every 5 miles sucks). Rain sucks for vision at night, so be careful. Put your sleeves over your gloves, not gloves over sleeves because rain trickles inside otherwise). Cover your bike in ACF50 every winter, cover your bike if stored outside. Don't trust anyone and lock your bike properly. I have about 5 locks, as much as a pain in the arse it is, do it. I've had two bikes stolen in the past so I learned from this. I could keep going but I fancy a sandwich.

@@amberroper1320 by D locks, I'm assuming you mean the shackle type disc locks? Yes, but use them in combination with a couple of other types of lock. My locks in addition to the obviously built-in steering lock are two Oxford monster Disc locks, one almax 16mm heavy duty chain with squire padlock, Datatool alarm and Oxford monster padlock and chain. I use all of these when stored at home. When out anywhere else I take two disc locks and one chain and padlock. Easy enough to carry, alarm obviously wired to bike permanently. Pain in the arse but not when you consider a stolen bike is much worse. Any lock can be broken quickly, but a combination makes it a lot more difficult and deters a potential their due to time restraints.

The best part about owning a motorcycle is having your mum ask you to pick up something for her, she's like oh yeah it will easily fit in your bag, here's the order number... you get to the shop and the box is like 4ft long... yeah cheers mum, thanks for the embarrassment lmao

Same. Been on just a bike for 2 years now. Lots of layers, winter tyres and pinlock visor in the winter, vee wipe, and panniers ftw with shopping. That 'traffic' doesn't really apply, parking anywhere and paying peanuts for fuel are probably the best upsides (apart from just being on a bike obvs!). Been supposed to get my car back on the road but it's just not happened yet #125life

Well I've been on the road for 8 years now and never owned a car in my life, never even bothered to get my car licence, rain hail and shine I still ride my bike to work, or wherever it is I gotta go. It can be a bit annoying especially in winter rainy mornings, but I live in Australia and it's summer now and to be honest I can't remember the last day it has rained. Plus free parking everywhere, cheap rego, filtering, all the attention on the Rd etc there is plenty of benefits that go with it.

I own both and personally I think experiencing the road both on a bike and in a car helps you become a better driver. Driving a car will help you understand the habits of car drivers and why they do things the way they do, likewise with motorcyclists.

What a brilliant video. I’m 17 and have been riding for a year now. I’ve got a 2019 geared and I have this dilemma of getting a car or sticking with a bike. I love bikes and I don’t see the point of cars. People say oh Yh but you can’t take mates etc but with a full license if they want a lift that bad they can get on the back😅 I think I’m gonna stick with bikes 💥👍🏽

I've lived with just a bike for coming up to two years now. It's not for the faint hearted. It's always a faff and it's quite often miserable, but I'd choose the bike over the train anyday. I have various sizes of duffle bags and a large selection of bungee cords and straps that have always helped me transport some really large things (The delivery driver will be your new best friend 😆). Still haven't figured out how to transport my drumkit on the back though....

I've been living with just my bike for 5 months. It's a pain in the ass with a family, and now my bike needs new tyres, chain, brakes and desmo service - all just before christmas - I thought I best get another car. Don't think I'll go without one again, just have the bike for fun/commuting. Plus, I slid off at 40mph on ice last year, don't fancy another broken foot...

I've been riding for just over a year now on a 125. All year all weather rider. I'm never really bothered by the typical British weather only when it was super hot xD (but yes i'm not gonna lie pouring rain isn't nice). Shopping wise i usually do a trip once a week, little bits through the week after work, if its a big shop ill just put the tail bag on for a little extra room. It is a lot of effort in the morning etc, gear, locks, shed locking etc compared to just jumping in the car in pretty much your pj's to go to the shop. I recently went on a long road trip in a friends car, dad asked after if i'm interested in a car now, but i have absolutely zero interest or want to drive a car. People ask why but i just don't really have a specific answer. So much so i'm doing my bike theory later this month for preparation of doing the DAS next year.

I can't wait to get a car for commuting and here's why: I don't care what bike you have or what gear you wear, when it's January, 2 degrees, 6am, pissing down with rain it's miserable. Also all the faff, morning routine includes: dressing up, unlocking all the locks from the bike putting them in backpack which makes it weigh like 15kg more, then get to work lock the bike up while raining, struggle to find where to put all the wet gear, at the end of the day put on the wet gear and reverse the previous procedures. In a car it would be get in can, go to work get out of car, work that's it. I have to leave way earlier with a bike than I would have to with a car. Also I now associate riding a bike with going to work which takes some joy out riding. Also even if it is a nice summers day when I get home I don't want to go for a ride in the evening again because I have to dress up again, take the bike out again and then oh damn I will need petrol in the middle of the week and probably lube the chain sooner and bla bla bla. As for car license it was totally cheaper than bike license which I still only have A2. I also thought that getting a car license would open up job opportunities but companies won't touch you if you are under 25 for insurance purposes. I could even get a car cheaper than a motorbike, the only thing stopping me is insurance prices. That being said if you live somewhere like London bike is still way better.

We do have a car which my wife uses 95% of the time as she’s at home with the baby. I commute all year round on the bike and it’s fine- just upgraded my jacket which was a great move. I find the bike really helps me mentally as well, I don’t have stressful journeys to work, I do t get stuck in the crazy central Brighton traffic, and it takes half the time. 👍🏻

I used to only use a bike year round and its definitely doable in the UK, heated grips all year with added hand guards in the depths of winter with a cheap ebay heated vest and waterproof jacket over your motorcycle jacket as a windbreaker if you're traveling far/fast and you don't even get cold! On the absolute worst days with sheet ice or snow I'd just swallow my pride and take the bus, always better safe than sorry.

Absolutely you can! I live with just a motorcycle myself. I had a 1800cc bike, but it ate tons of fuel. I now have a 2021 Yamaha MT-03. Several reasons. 1. The bike has an upright riding position. 2. It is easy to repair if accidents happen. 3. Maintenance is easy. Everything is open and no need to remove a bunch of fairings to get to the engine or electrical components (naked bike). 4. Shopping for me is quite easy, just carry a backpack. 5. Cheap on gas! I can go to the city an hour away, in 2023, on $6 of fuel! That is a feat where I live. Using a car would cost you a minimum of $18 worth of fuel! 6. I have always enjoyed driving a motorcycle versus driving a car. Cars are nice, but motorcycle are fun. I live in Texas, FYI. WEATHER CAN GET PRETTY SKETCHY. But, no matter the weather, I enjoy it.

I solved this issue by living in a LWB sprinter van hahha. I have my supermoto in the garage of the van next to the shower and toilet and my living space is separated by a door to keep the smells out. And I live full time and occasionally travel with this setup... I'm also living in Scotland so the van has a wood burning stove inside. So now I can do my shopping by driving my house to the shop and wherever I go I have my supermoto... which means no more highways on the bike for me! I save the bike for the fun roads now! It's awesome! Also, no more rent or bills or council tax!

defiantly agree with you there cars neither interest or excite me like a bike does, never had a car licence and i doubt i ever would obtain one ever. I dont plan on carrying around ladders or big boxes any how and anything i do want i just order it online and pay delivery job sorted. May be if insurance on a car wasn't so disgustingly ridiculous as well as buying the thing in the 1st place i might of considered it years ago before the bike bug bit me hard but even in the winter if you wear enough layers and spend a decent amount on textile or leather garments ya pretty much immune to the weather any way and if its that bad outside dont go out lol, a big bike with a set of decent sized panniers and top box is more than enough for a family of three shopping wise but then again Iceland and the like deliver any way long as you spend over 30 pounds which i think most people would when grub shopping i dont really see a car as an advantage especially in today's traffic, and the final point about bikes being dangerous as every one seems to say religiously if you dont ride like a complete bell end and keep your wits about you, you can more than half that issue just by looking and planning ahead with intuition a biker develops you no what people are going to do usually before they do any way, ride safe.

I lived with just a bike for years, the change came for me one winter, I was commuting down my usual country lanes when I hit a patch of ice on a corner, biker and bike down, nobody for miles and a broken phone, too pained to pick the bike back up, I dragged it off the road as best I could, walked to the nearest house I could find, and they helped me, got a car after that, my back was suffering riding 30 miles each way every day on poorly surfaced lanes anyway so the car was for the best, I think it is all dependant on your lifestyle, my job now is 15 minutes across the city, so a bike is very feasible now

Never owned a car or done my test and don't ever plan on doing so. Bought a sinnis apache 6 years ago (thanks spicy!) 2 years after that, as soon as I turned 19 i done my A2, then after another 2 years done my A licence. In that time I have owned all sorts of bikes, supermotos, naked, supersports, cruisers. A few months ago I bought an FJR1300 as my daily runaround and it's honestly the most perfect every day bike for someone without a car. Big electric screen to keep the cold wind and rain off, heated grips, added a couple of 12v and USB power outlets for long trips, panniers, top box and tank bag is able to hold so much stuff, couple of straps fo carry larger items. Before getting this bike I used to ride like an absolute loon everywhere I went, for some reason I actually enjoy riding this bike normally like you would with a car, but I still have 146bhp at my disposal if I do want a bit of fun. Don't think I'm ever going to be without an FJR now, but I am looking forward to getting an MT10 as a weekend toy next year!

I work days at a factory in a city, my XT 660 X is excellent for getting me there and back home quickly. I'd have been late SO MANY times if I couldn't filter traffic. My only complaints are: cold and rain suck, I'm scared of cornering in the winter weather (icy and snowy) and I have to get there 10 mins early everyday to remove gear/put soaked waterproofs in heating cupboard to dry, then have to put it all back on again before I leave work. I still arrive home sooner than car drivers though :) I would love a car, but there are three off-puts: 1. Cost, 2. Traffic jams, 3. Can't do wheelies

You could rent a uhaul cheap in my area and they will rent you a van to go buy furniture and things like that. They probably close around 6pm maybe 8pm and they charge like 40$ up front for a van plus .50 cents a mile and you have to fill up the tank before you return it or they will change you again but renting a van for a day to move things should likely cost you just under 100$ where I'm at.

As someone that went from a car to a bike (because of a car crash) there are times I miss having a car. However, I live in a town centre, within walking distance of work, so I can walk to work. I still ride year round, in fact, I passed my CBT in the depths of winter and rode through it on a scooter. I use the bike for visiting family. It's definitely less practical for bulky stuff, but I've got enough luggage space that I can easily do a few days away on the bike, or a smaller weekly shop for one. Would I have another car? No. They're just waaay too expensive. Especially in a rural area with high demand and low supply of second hand cars.

My wife has never driven a car but rides to work every day all year. I have a wee 30 year old 125 that i ride to work on, when it works... Pushing it still isn't fun even if it is small... and I always prefer riding to driving. We have a small car for shopping but the rest of the time we'll ride. Well with my commute (50 miles each way) I’ve gotta go past Dartford which means going through the tunnels and over the bridge. And half of the time one of the Tunnels are closed. Or there’s an accident because people don’t know how. To drive 🙄 so having a bike is better for me because I save money on insurance, I don’t have to pay the Dart charge. And I don’t have to pay to sit in traffic. I’ve had both and I’d take a bike any day which is why I went back to riding. And I haven’t looked back. I’m out on all weathers but the amount of pros for me compared to cons. Living with a Bike is so much easier and better.

Know the pain of the Dartford tunnels, the QE2 bridge usually always flowing until some idiot has an accident. The tunnels are to travel north and the bridge to cross south. I used to work in Croydon and used to all hit long queues from J3, miles away from the tunnels, used to take over an hour to do a couple of miles. Given up driving and passed my A licence 7 years ago. Now jams don't matter any more. must have filtered over a thousand vehicles to get to the toll booths. Even now they are gone you still get miles of queues. No wonder Chris Rea composed that song about the M25, Road to Hell. In London the TOTAL cost of ownership for ONE YEAR including lessons for the cheapest car I could reasonably get is about £7500. The equivalent costs on a premium 125 that can do motorways is about £3000. For some people (like myself) that is the difference between spending all your savings on public transport because you can't afford a car or being able to save money for the next license (which is completely optional btw) and a new bike.

Been riding for 4 years, and only now I'm thinking of getting a car license, just for convenience. I'm planning on moving to the northern part of my country for a different college and the winters there are harder, especially with 50-60 plus KPH winds and tropical monsoons, so doing a 35 km commute in that weather to school and back will be...what's the word I'm looking for, hell? yeah so I guess a beater car for winter will be a plan....though it's like 10-11 months of clear weather here in the middle East so who knows

Before I got my driving license and car, I only had a bike, always had the same opinion of it’s not that bad and I don’t need a car, won’t use it much when I get one anyway, until I started driving, I’d stay at my girlfriends house before we moved in together and if I’d ridden there, I had to ride to work, that’s when it became evident that if it’s raining, snowing, insanely windy, or just I ached from the cold (which you’ll understand from your accidents and your back problem) I seriously missed my car 😂

I could possibly survive without a car, but it would add a faff and would mean some very cold rides to work and back in winter. I am lucky that my commute is short so I can get in and out easily in a car. I utterly agree about a van over a car, I hope to trade my Fiesta for a Transit next year, so much easier for tip runs and trackdays! :-) Regarding getting a licence, my old man insisted I got mine when I was younger, even though I told him I was happy just riding motorbikes at the time. Within 2 weeks of me passing my car test I had recouped the cost of getting the licence by doing a temp driving job.

Just to put in my personal oppinion i have been rideing for,,, mmm god knows how many years Im an OAP now . Had 3 kids so i baught a 350 Jawa and a sidecar and used that for a few years , never found the need for a car. What i do recomend is a Honda C90 or the modern equivelent as a second bike.( keep the Harley nice for poseing on) ,at the moment i ride a Honda Wave its been used abused and thrashed to death, it costs hardly anything to run its as relible as hell in 6 years all its needed is petrol(120 to 130 mpg),oil and tyres , with a stupidly large top box and panniers with a modified rack that Ive easly transported 6, 8 foot long fence posts and a a kitchen sink lol. when I get too old to swing a leg over a bike then ill get a car . But to be honest i hope that day wont ever come.

I went bike only a number of years ago. I'll be honest it was a real hassle. It's not really cheaper cos bike tyres for instance are expensive af and the chain is a constant battle. The insurance is about the same. Then you have the getting the gear on and off everytime you go out, that wears very thin. Winters are brutally cold. Summers are hot af in your gear. You can't carry much. Cars are easier on every front, just get in as you are and off you go. I can see the appeal in a busy city but otherwise its a bit rubbish. I found commuting ruined riding for me too, just made riding a chore. Then we started a family, this was the final straw. Back to full time car, good god it's sooooo much easier. Mind you I still find my self lusting after bikes now and then, wouldn't mind one of then ducati scramblers.

Growing up I always had my mind set on bikes not cars. Once I turned 17 I was given my parents old car as they got a new one which was an insensitive to do driving lesson. All together the lessons cost about £900 including my test. My first year car insurance was £2200. The car is worth about £1500 roughly on eBay etc. So yes it's expensive but if you can afford to do it and get it out of the way early as possible I think it's worth it as it should only get cheaper. I still think bikes are amazing and more cost effective(ish) and definitely want to be riding in the future. And if anyone can leave some tips about starting riding and what it's like to be a rider as well as a car driver that'd be cool

Brill choice, theyre sort of on par up to a point though where insurance is concerned for me in the uk anyway, tax is much cheaper than my car which is £200 a year, my bike being £60 but insurance on my bike is £214 on my bike per year and £400 on my car and im 27 and have been driving for 8 years where as i only passed my DAS on 16th Oct 2019.
