You wouldn't accept lag offline, so why do it online? ume.net, a fiber broadband provider that offers up to 1000 Mbit/s, performed an experiment. Four volunteers got to experience internet's biggest disturbance in real life - lag.

***** yes, that is correct, to stream something effectively, your internet must be able to transfer at the given bits/second however, once your speed is consistently above the required rate, you will no longer see an increase in performance that means that in most streaming cases (any online game really), you bottleneck on ping by about 1 Mb/s the 1000mbps described in the description is overkill for any single streaming task, what it does allow is a non-streaming task to be completed very rapidly and/or multiple tasks at once back to my original point, the company's suggestion that their speed will eliminate lag is an attempt to wow idiots with numbers without any context

@cptrex98
@cptrex98 10 жыл бұрын
Its not about the feed inside of the ocolous, but the amount of cameras mounted on the outside. The ocolous produces one image for each eye. But its still from just one camera. With your eyes you see two separate images from slighty different angles, one for each eye. When you have only one camera you see two of the exact same images from the exact same angle. There's still one for each eye, but since theyre no different the images, even though there's one for each eye, appear flat and you cannot percive depth. To be able to do so you would need two cameras that produce a separate image for each eye. Hopefully you understand what im trying to say :P

Slight problem. To my knowledge. You can lag whilst having 1Mbit/s. You can lag whilst having 100,000,000 Mbit/s. The bandwidth is not the same as the speed it takes the signals to arrive.
@DrewYoungThomas
@DrewYoungThomas 10 жыл бұрын
Yes but it still helps, obviously ping is the major factor though.
@RanmaKei
@RanmaKei 10 жыл бұрын
You are correct that the distance the signal has to travel to arrive at its destination is the largest contribution to lag. But as far the the USA region is concerned I don't think this is the major issue of lag. Having overhead in terms of bandwidth will help with lag dramatically, especially on the upload. The problem is consumer demand for digital media is so great that it overloads the network. A single household where everyone wants to watch or stream HD videos while downloading/sharing and gaming will saturate their upload and cause that unfortunate delay. The router has to start queuing on the up stream causing lag. Most High Speed ISP's in the USA as far as I know, have very good response time. There was a FCC report that showed highest average for the year is 54ms. Based on test data from major ISP's.

@JonoGilmour
@JonoGilmour 10 жыл бұрын
He's right. The only time that lag would be affected by bandwidth is if the size of the data you're trying to send is larger than the maximum bandwidth, as it will have to be sent in chunks causing a delay, but this is incredibly rare as the majority of applications that are subject to lag in real time are games, and the data chunks they send are small enough for the vast majority of connections to send out in one go.

I was hoping to find that answer. Look like there are still some people that know their stuff. The only exception where lag/bandwidth have something to do with each other when it comes to packet size (for example in voice transmittion codecs). Smaller packets -> higher bandwidth but less lag. Bigger packets -> lower bandwith but more lag.

Lewan Montero Yes that's why I said at 5-10 Mbit/s. Gaming does not require as much bandwidth. I had a 5-8 Mbit copper line, now I've got 80 Mbit fibre, I used to game a shit tun on that connection, especially during throttled peak hours where my connection was reduced to 1-3 Mbits, it was still playable and it didn't affect in game lag, I played a lot of competitive Counter Strike back then and in game rates, interp, lag and all this shit matters.

You can't expect to have a low latency to a server in Texas or to max your bandwidth on it no matter what line you have, unfortunately. Geographic distance matters. :/ www.nbnco.com.au/about-us/media/news/nbn-gigabit-nation.html

Gamers develop lag compensation, to some extent. It's about refining anticipatory focus regarding spatial awareness and precision movements, etc. As far as the concerns in this video, well... I think these kids would - if given enough time - develop techniques to the point where these activities would yield fairly normal or natural results...

Yes but your also like most gamers with lag you get eye strain, badly. So it would come with headaches and neck pain cuz that thing looks heavy. Not disagreeing just it would probably be more of a pain then it's worth.
@PigreKo
@PigreKo 10 жыл бұрын
***** this is not he point. the thing they are wearing is just there to let random people experiment the meaning of "lag" and why it is so painful for gamers and internet users in general. By experimenting in real life activities they understand why a good internet connection is meaningful, cause even for the most basic activities, lagging is a huge burden. More over, eye strain is not correlated to lag, they are completely different issues.
@PigreKo
@PigreKo 10 жыл бұрын
gamers adapt to the lag, but they will always be at a huge disadvantage. Living with that kind of lag, means you have to memorize how to move and do stuff instead of relaying on continuous video feedback, which means: you cannot do well any activity which require completely new actions until you have mastered them you are slow to perform complex task even if you know all the moves required, unless you literally perform them blindly or a real master of them (like dancing) you cannot easily react to new events. So there is no way your life could ever be completely normal. Since you are not blind but somehow even more hindered by the hiccuping feedback.
@adizmal
@adizmal 10 жыл бұрын
Pierfrancesco Greco I never said life like this would be completely normal... I said these activities would yield fairly normal or natural results. Anyways, when you talk about 'mastery' of complex tasks, realize that gamers put in comparable hours to dancers, in regards to developing the type of motor skills and understanding of the variables in play in the environment. It's same shit. If you put in 1000s of hours doing something over and over, you'd most likely be able to do it 'blind' (ie hindered) with fairly good results - and no, a third of a second is not that bad in a game or in real life... when you get beyond 1-2 seconds, then yes it becomes difficult to chain complex things together with precision, anticipation of that type of stuff doesn't flow well beyond a couple secs.

I worked before at **** and at first I kind a laughed at some people that experience this type of lag... however me myself experienced this a lot.... A LOT.... and its not fun especially when playing games and having conversation during chat conferences... Their is still a lot of boundaries that stops us in dealing with lag.. 1. Distance 2. Equipment issue 3 Server issues 4. maintenance and the lack of it 5. Support issue (example being that League of Legends would only cater to a certain ISP which bull) and many more... So its up to the companies... people have the money to pay... why not make the service excellent so people would regret the subscription its kinda almost like buying supplements.... if it works, worth.. if not, we regret it... thanks GG

"you wouldn't accept lag offline, so why accept it online. Get 1000 Mbit/s fiber today." The problem I have with this statement is that most online shooters require less than 10 megs to play online. the real issue comes with the response time from servers. which of course means that the establishment would need some good hardware at the client, then at their server to be routed to the server were trying to connect to.

I have to admit, I hate slow internet so much. Despite this, waiting for a webpage to load or a video to buffer has taught me so many lessons. In fact, I think I am more productive with slow internet during most cases (assuming I'm not skype-ing or working online, of course). When the internet is fast, I just tend to download movies and feast on KZbin, while when the internet is slow, I actually open my book and study to kill waiting time.

the point is, if they have internet its the best ping they can get. Or the provider has do improve their CONNECTION to the INTERNET with a lot of money -> building a new cable connection, or builing an LTE tower or sth. Thats the point. The ping is connected to the lenght of cable u use to the next station. if u live 20 km away from the city, ur internet will be so fucking delayed. when u live next to the station it will be like 5 ms

For anyone who's played any REAL competitive multiplayer game such as counter-strike, you'll know that this is NOT how real servers handle lag in a game. The deal is if you hit the ball client side, the server accepts it as you hitting the ball, so there will be a "rubber band effect" that feels very weird and jittery but is much more fair to all players.
@SonicXRage

Lag comes in different types. This one is minor internet lag. Next time, we should try the "common" lag (the most common lag that comes from low FPS, making games feel like slideshows) and lag spikes (sudden freeze that can occur despite good FPS; no actions can be done until it's gone, usually after a few minutes). And, if possible, major internet lag (like a lag spike, except only you can move around, and will "fast forward" to the present time and will often viciously fling you around the place when it ends if you have been moving around). Those are the worst.

Yes you do, unless you're trying to go by touch, which was not the point of the experiment. Since you're turning your head, to look at the bowl, your turn is on lag as well. Plus he was moving REALLY slowly. The point wasn't whether he could find a way to do it correctly. It was to see if he could do it by sight alone. But yes, still amusing
@Ashalmawia
@Ashalmawia 10 жыл бұрын
there is both the position of your view that is lagged, but also the position of your hand. they are seeing their hand over the bowl, even though it has since moved too far. you'd first have to get used to waiting for the full lag time to confirm that things are the way you expect them to be; I would imagine that eventually you'd get used to it at least somewhat, and start to be more confident about whether you're off or not.
@fang1621
@fang1621 10 жыл бұрын
That too. But that didn't seem to be his problem if he stops over the bowl. But if he didn't stop, then yes that's a factor. But it seemed he would wait. So i think there are a lot of problems with lag in real life.

I would try to explain it like this, bandwidth is the maxium speed after you establish a connection, latency is the time it takes to make the connection... If you open a command prompt (win+r, "cmd") and type "tracert (insert web address here, starting with www)", you'll see how many routers/servers(hops) you have to go through in order to view that website, and how long it takes... Lag when playing an online game is how long it takes information to travel between your computer and the server you're playing on. It's more about infrastructure then your connection speed...

Interesting and funny, but a few things frustrated me a bit. Bandwidth has nothing to do with lag, there's no reason to believe that a 1000Mb/s has any less lag than 100 or 10 Mb/s. I also think 3s is a bit much as far as typical lag values on internet go. Even 200ms is a bit much. They said they used values from 1/3s to 3s, I would have liked to see what happens at 50-100ms. Also the video could be misinterpreted, one could get the impression that oculus is worthless because it's laggy.

Jesse Fuller That doesn't add up to me. Take the bowling for example, overstepping the line makes sense, your moving toward something and can't tell how close you really are because of the delay, but being unable to throw the ball straight doesn't make sense. Or cracking the egg, he is hitting the side of the bowl with the egg, then when he opens it, he moves all the way past the other side of the bowl to pour it out. He already knew where the edge of the bowl was, that was just simple overcompensation, no delay would cause that. I could crack a 1000 egg's with my eyes completely closed and always get them in the bowl if I knew where the edge of it was.
