Good review however the two negatives you brought up are easily solved by the non-adventure version. I own a F850GS so I can speak to this. First, the non-adventure version is a bit lower and weighs less. The fuel capacity with the improved fuel economy over the F800 is just fine. Secondly, the non-adventure version looks really well put together and the design cues flow much better. The GSA version seems to be an afterthought and definitely a design compromise. Just my two bits worth.

I have followed your great reviews and advice for a long time and in this one you addressed something very important to me and older folks like me. When the bikes get too heavy to handle when standing or pushing it around becomes a chore. After your review of the R1200 several years ago, I bought one. I remember that I had a lot of problems standing my F800RT. When I sat for the first time on a R1200 I almost sent it to the other side because I found it too light (though is heavier) just like you pointed out. I love my bike. I will hate getting rid of it but I have to do it. I was always in a short side but at my age I lost at least 2 inches of height. I cannot tell you my loss of strength either. I hope you get to my age, or that by then, they have stopped aging. Many over 80 stop riding, but I have decided go lighter but keep having fun. Unfortunately, the F850GS won't be it. I looking seriously at the BMW G 310 GS or the new Honda CB500X when I can try them. I’m looking forward to it. I hope you review them. Most people call this class of bike rookies' bikes. They forget the people at the other end that still enjoy a ride in the trails or the twisters but no longer have the strength to lift it if they drop it. It is not easy been old but the alternative is even worse. Keep your nice channel going. Happy trails.

Me and the wife just did Spain and France on our F850 GS Sport.. Some things we learned the Vario cases even empty add too much weight to the bike, Also found the Seat terrible even with Air Hawks on, Lack of grip from the tyres, No power really when trying to do 120kph up hill.. It did the job but honestly not impressed and the back shock wasn't unto it and the from suspension is too soft.. the adventure is better tbh but best just getting the big boy 1250. I work for BMW and I don't rate the engine tbh, Chucking mine in for a 1250. Oh and lubing the chain and cleaning it on a 3000 mile trip is a pain in the arse.

Was your journey all Blacktop roads or did you use forest and off as well? If all on Blacktop why purchase a F850GS? I use my F700GS for forest roads and occasionally double tracks, just did a trip from Canada down through the States and the whole of the Baja, and return, bike performance was great. Same bike also too me to inuvik and the artic Circle. However, for total Blacktop journeys i use my Triumph trophy SE. A far superior bike to the BMW 1250

Thanks for the review. Re the Nav VI, I suspect the mounting angle on the F series bikes is a contributing factor. On the R1250GS it is definitely less prone to the glare issue. Re the Speedo Angels protector, I tried the "Premium Tempered Glass" version and did not like it (it gave a purple tinge to the TFT and looked a bit opaque). I then tried the "Anti-Glare" version and found it far better. I would definitely recommend that one - www.speedo-angels.com/product/bmw-connectivity-tempered-glass-dashboard-screen-protector-anti-glare/

I've got a f800gs but looking at the 850 less fuel more weight normal fuel tank position. Less suspension travel. With the extra weight does the 9hp make any difference. And I have heard the Chinese built engine is more mechanically noisy.

Hi TMF - we met recently at the Krazy Horse event in Suffolk - I was one of the Visorcat winners. Just to say really enjoy these videos, although one element is missing (alluded to in the comment below) which is two up touring capability. I realise this may make the videos more complicated / time consuming, but at least perhaps comment on the payload and likely two up lugging capability of the engine suspension (if you can) Cheers

You're right about the visibility, saw one the other day in daylight coming towards me, super bright lights, really stood out. Had the 850gsa rallye out yesterday while my R12R was in for service. Nice bike, but it is heavy, and the rallye seat is high. I found it very balanced in slow traffic, junctions etc, but needed revving to get the best from it. Weather protection proved to be good, the heavens opened at one point. It has some stiff competition out there, the KTM 790 adventure to name one, lighter, and more entertaining engine.

You repeated yourself twice at the start, two intros. You didn't you take it off road, not even up and over a kerb. I think for me it is either be the KTM 790 Adv S or the more off road R as they are much lighter, or spend more ££££ and get the bigger 1250GSA with it's low down weight and lighter feeling handling. Or you could get a second hand GS1200 with top spec for much the same money as this. Thanks for making and sharing.

It suffers from the usual BMW "just take it to a dealership" issue which actually makes adventure bikes, well, not adventure bikes. You need special tool just to remove the spark plugs, who the hell thought of that? If you can't fix it on the side.of the road in a desert with a handful of tools, it's a bad adventure bike. The 1250 is even worse.

Solid review, BUT, it’s an enduro machine. No off road in the review? Suspension? Does it have bmw receptical for heated clothing with bmw plug? Ride mode change on the fly? Can a single rider pick it up when it’s down on its side? How difficult is it to remove the wheel for an off road flat tire? Can that be done with the bike on the center stand by a single rider? I’ve seen a few of these reviews and this is a good one for a street bike,,,,,

I have a problem with the “bubble”. Let me explain. I had an 1200 RT, 1600 GTL pre 2017, 1600 GTL 2018, now 1200 GSA. I only felt the real bubble on the RT, but being a boring bike I sold it for the ‘17 GTL. On these I needed to install the Airowings and mini Airowings then I had the perfect bubble as the RT. The new GTL has better protection but not as the RT. Travelling a lot in eastern europe the GTL started to be to heavy for me. Every time you shift you boundaries and I started to get scared to drop such a heavy bike as I usually drive on my own. So I tested a 1200 GSA. That is like a bicycle and putting the pro’s and con’s I went for the GSA. But.....NO way I am in a bubble, and I knew this. That is why I have a problem when these reviews (and I drove the 850GS last week) keep saying they are in a complete bubble. The wind is on your face, on your arms now way you can drive on the motorway and feeling yourself in a bubble!! On the GTL pre ‘17 the wind goes from you gluves into your jacket up your armpits! With the Airowings it is perfect. So a bubble for me is riding at 120km/h with open helmet and not feeling any force wind against your body. Point of my ranting: Saying that you ride in a complete bubble on this bike is a pure lie. That is my two personal cents on my experience.
@splodge57145 жыл бұрын
I owned a BMW R1100S and it had the worst 'bubble' of any bike I've rode. Terrible wind turbulence from 30mph. The R11500GS wasn't much better.

@splondge 57, thank you for your personal feedback. This is exactly what I mean. This guy makes youtube videos and we all watch and hope to get some decent “unbiased” info. Bring your bike and we do it together, give you free lodging, you will be in a bubble in the room I guarantee.

Hello miss flyer I have a question that maybe you can help clarify, are you able to explain why the Engine made for the BMW Gs 650 from Loncin has maintenance intervals of 10,000 km but the same engine from Loncin now in the Euro 5 format that is used on your premium brand Voge on the Ds\Dsx model have intervals of 5,000 km? The same can be said of the Voge 300 rally engine because this 300cc engine was manufactured in China for the Kawasaki klx 300 however the same thing happens with the BMW engines i.e. the Voge 300cc engine has intervals of 5,000 km but the Klx 300 it has 12,000 km.. What's your opinion on this? By the way the same engine used in the Voge Dsx is the same one that mahindra is working on for the BSA Goldstar 650 however I think there is still no information about maintenance intervals or do you know anything about it?

BMW needs it their cars have always been in front of the internal illumination perfection. They should have been 1st to this not following the rest... orange please and can we get a touchscreen as well because they are trailing instead of leading. Wish the stupid I-pad would go back to half analog and 1/2 settings. Why not have an above average windscreen. For years the F800 had a low fuel tank that loaded for the side. Bring it back.

I own one and it does wonderfully. I am going to get a different seat at some point for longer trips, but traveling together is nice on this bike.

Hey TMF! Just watching some of your older clips as I’m looking at testing one of these next week. A very good 2019 example. In your (humble) opinion, is there much difference between this and my 2018 ATAS? And my goodness that Panigale looked good in the background!

@@TheMissendenFlyer Yeah that's what I thought. Prob be better off looking at a 690 Adventure R or even the Tuareg. Have a good one!

High maintenance cost. My older Goldwing costs 180 Canadian dollars a year for insurance and maintenance is almost nothing. Got it used so I could take a few long trips with the money i saved. Electronics are nice until they break down.

The very first BMW I could see myself owning, not being a fan of the boxer looks.

hmm this is probably a minor thing, but i also reckon you should mention how wide the seats are by taking out a tap measurement. I mean height is one thing but width of seats also contribute to it. Dont see few to non reviewers do this, maybe there too many variables? but couldn't hurt to try, just for comparison sakes.

Looks like a great bike...However, in my opinion no bottom engine guard as a standard in an Adventure bike is a crime!
@DanielJLopes5 жыл бұрын
Exactly why I am not going for a smaller engine BMW bike, just like my old Honda Deauville, this has the weight distribution higher than a boxer engine, making it's feel while stopped very heavy.

I really don't understand the latest fad that every bike needs a tft display. Honestly I wouldn't thank you for one on any of my bikes, even the best ones I've seen aren't actually that great. I much prefer the display on my 2019 vstrom. It's got all the info you need, really easy to read, has an analogue rev counter and doesn't add about 2k onto the price.
@TheMissendenFlyer3 жыл бұрын
Pushing on an open door here with that one!

@@TheMissendenFlyer I'm not one of those old school technophobes that hate all gizmos on new bikes. I frankly love features like abs, traction control and the likes. But I really can't see a need for tft displays, unless they have a built in sat nav then I can see the point in combining it to a nice tft.
