I love Charlotte more and more with each episode. She was the one I was most skeptical about, especially that scene of her during the first episode of her sunbathing while her mom serves her tea and does her nails for her. But she has really turned out to be the most open minded and genuinely interested in bettering herself and is inquisitive about the Amish way of life and understanding where they are coming from; and accepting of any task or chore they ask of her. I pray for her that she can have a deep and intimate relationship with God and can find that fulfillment she seeks. I hope this experience truly changes her life for the better.

" You can't create happiness, it comes from within." - What an astute observation
@randsollie79218 жыл бұрын
I think we, as westerners, don't realize how much harm we are doing ourselves by our constant entertainment. We equate joy and happiness with being entertained, so much so that we idolize those that entertain us. We want to look like them, dress like them--our clothes styles, our hair styles, even our beliefs seem to follow theirs. We tend to find our identity in people we admire; we want to be like them instead of just being who we are. I think this is what I admire so much about the Amish: they are not so self-focused, they are community focused. They are not in competition with each other, they are in community with each other. They realize they cannot be complete without each other and that causes them value each other to the point that no one questions if they are of any value--that's a given. We in the west seem to only value those who can do something for or give something to us. Something I've been thinking a lot about lately.

Cities are illusions to keep our souls imprisonned in the slavery system owned by the elites. All you find in there is ideology : Money - Law - Architecture - Art - Music - Fashion - Warfare - Economics - Politics - Religion etc. All these stuffs havn't been created by God but Men. I agree completely. I moved as a child from a rural farm to inner city when my parents split and it was such a culture shock, I felt like I was constantly being watched bc there is no privacy outside- and yet I didn’t k ow my neighbors either, they were just there and sometimes outside watching. It’s lonely and I reminisce a lot back to my childhood. It wasn’t perfect but having that kind of space helped me know myself, and know how. I would spend all day alone in the woods or caring for our animals and chores. I would go out questioning everything feeling lost and confused and come back with a feeling of peace, no it didn’t all make sense but I would always find peace in the sound of the wind in the trees and the sound of leaves under my feet. I miss it so much. One day I pray I am able to live off the land. I am a prisoner to my phone. It’s unnatural. I need to find my roots. I learned carpentry as a child and I love working with my hands. I struggle in college and recently decided it’s just not for me I need to work with my hands. It’s difficult when everything is so expensive, but I just struggle so much with school and I don’t find them fulfilling.

His mom says sending him away from home to a great university could help "George to think about himsellf and not about being the brother number 2." But in rality she send him away because she put pressure on him about his study.
@kerim.peardon55515 жыл бұрын
She wants him to spend more time at home, but she sent him away when he was younger, so the message she taught him was that being with family isn't important. You only have a short number of years to be with your kids and if you don't develop a tight, deep relationship with them then, you will never have it. I had family members that I was taken away from when I was 8--I went from spending quite a bit of time with them on a regular basis to only brief visits occasionally. I had another family member that I was allowed to spend huge amounts of time with. As a result, I was very close to the latter and feel distant from the others. And I recognize I will never have the same feelings and connection with the absent family members as I had with the one whom I spent time with every other week. Unfortunately, that's what George's mother has done; she sent her son away when he was still in his bonding years and, as a result, he has no real bond with her and never will. She will be as close to him as a cousin he spends holidays with, not like a mother.

In the past, I've dated a few guys who had gotten a bit frustrated with the relationship because they said, I didn't make them feel wanted by kissing on them and being close to them often. My reply is usually, that will come, but for now, let's just get to "KNOW" one another. In our American culture, our guys are taught to just "go for it" (sex) they're hardly ever taught to take the time to find out what's in the girl's heart. Even, the guys who actually really see you as marriage material falls into the trap of this culture and go for being physically intimate over pursuing knowledge about the girl. (Yea, our culture is a little off-kettle and we need to submit to the ways of the Lord- they're much better anyway).

Sweet Sugar 101 No, the guys are not taught that, they expect it as if it is their right. No sex by the third date and their gone. Then they complain that they are no "good girls, or wife material around", kinda twisted thinking. Then, they only go for looks and are soooo disappointed when they open up their eyes to who the girl really is. She was the same all along, but they're eyes were clouded,and they only could see her tits at first.

Jesus Christ of course died for every human being on this earth, those who are gone those who will come and those who are here now. I've always been different and wanted so much to fit in but that never happened. I was bullied mercilessly, by my mother first, siblings, school kids etc. I found out why later. But God never wanted me to fit in, ever. I prayed to the Father to take out all those who should not be in my life and bring everyone He wanted in my life. He brought the Anabaptist into my life through going to VOM conference. I feel so blessed. I feel so alien in my western life style. I would miss wearing jeans though😕. These people who read by lantern light, ride in buggies and shun higher education and the ways of the world use sophisticated manufacturing equipment powered by air and hydraulic pressure controlled by modern technology. Their habits and customs abound with contradiction. This dichotomy of values, the mixture of modern technology with tradition poses questions about the meaning of modernization and its role in the Amish strategies to cope with the pressures of cultural survival in a modern world. Why are progressive methods accepted in some aspects of Amish culture and resisted in others? Tradition is one element of the cohesive glue that bonds a culture. The Amish see social separation as a by- product of industrialization and a divisive force in conflict with tradition. Over time the Amish suspect that industrialzation and social separation would fragment traditional methods and obliterate the close-knit community they tenaciously strive to maintain. To maintain a homogeneous, integrated community the bits and pieces of everyday social life are woven into a single fabric that stretches from cradle to grave. In order to avoid fragmentation that accompanies modernity, a society separates itself from the modern world in order to preserve a snug community and protect a cultural identity. Aspirations, whims and the rights of individual members are sacrificed to common goals if a cultural minority is to survive. Personal aspirations give way to collective goals. Groups find ways to supress individualism by persuading individuals to find fulfillment through collective objectives. Organizations will emphasize obedience, surrender, sacrifice, commitment and dicipline in order to harness individual resources for group purposes. Two hallmarks of the Amish religious doctrine to establish and maintain obsequence are, separation from the world and obedience to the church teaching and leaders. This is done by a syncretic blend of scripture with the Amish code of social conduct and limiting the education level of its children. The culture promotes social stratification characterized by endogamy, hereditary transmission of a lifestyle which often includes an occupation, ritual status in a hierarchy, and customary social interaction and exclusion based on cultural notions of purity and pollution. Amish culture in essence is a caste system. The Ordnung is the church district list of rules of conduct that encourages asceticism through threat of excommunication from the church and duress of being shunned by the social group and family. The Ordnung blends the scriptural teaching with rules of social conduct as interpreted by the church elders. With the challenges of living [isolated inside of] a progressively modern society, the Amish society is insidiously diluting its culture with an ever increasing necessity to bring in [integrate] outside services and monies. Their challenge is to integrate the ways of the world and continue to maintain an isolation without a loss of their social capital. Amish business must compete in a worldly economy and business place. There must be a controlled integration of worldly technology in order for them to compete in the market place. These integration are controlled through interpretation of the church elders in executing the Ordnung; a strict set of social rules outside of any biblical scripture. Essentially a compromise of their moral and ethical boundary. An appeasment to absorb change and uphold tradition becomes a delicate tension between tradition and modernity. And may be a futile attempt to remain a fossilized society living in the center of an industrial revolutionized culture. Solidarity and identity of community in part results from thwarting four challenges that threaten to diminish social capital and weaken the community: Modern education, technology, non-farm occupations and government intrusion. [note in the rapidly changing modernity, with respect to technology, economy and government the great challenges to remain self sufficient are becoming more and more stressful. I can see especially with respect to the ever increasing costs of health care as being a contention where communial support is over-whelmed and an inevitable compromise is made in acceptance of insurance is made within the community to relieve the burden of the ever increasing costs as well as maladies. ]

happiness comes when you learn to appreciate the things that you have when you are not fortunate or if its a thing even if its not the top notch of its category. I'm tired of listening to that crap.... ask the people in the poor countries if they are happy when they have nothing to eat. If I remove your job/house/food/cellphone or computer you might turn crazy on us the next hour. So stop being hypocrite people... same thing goes for the money !

Here in the U.S. I often see couples who are having casual sex and/or living together and it's not frowned upon. (So sad) Our entire culture has forsaken so many pure values when it comes to dating/courtship. I really admire the Amish in this regard. They're version of dating is talking and getting to really know the heart and mind of their suitor before marriage. Here, many people skip the "getting to know you" stage and fast forward to the "Hands On - No Hold Bars" stage within just a few days or weeks of the relationship and this mostly ends in frustration because we end up marrying someone we really don't know anything about. Help us Lord to get back to the basics so we might have better marriages.
@TickleMeElmo558 жыл бұрын
Yea, I'm a bit worried on how my future girlfriend will react to me opposing co-habitation since it seems after 1 yr couples move in with each other. Many of my thoughts about dating is the same with the Amish -- getting to know the woman before as friend first then, maybe, develop any mutual romance.
@sweetsugar10148 жыл бұрын
TickleMeElmo55 If I'm going to be honest with you (and sometimes truth hurts), she may not like it at all and decide to break it off and find a guy who will co-habitat with her. On the other hand she may find you even more appealing and draw closer to you bc of your respect for her and yourself. However, just b/c she may be okay with living together doesn't necessarily mean she will not like you b/c of your belief against it. The average woman just wants a good man and if ya'll been together for a whole year - there should be some level of understanding between the two of you where you can open up to her about 'anything'. When a woman is ready to settle down and have a committed relationship and a potential future husband, she'll be willing to accept your beliefs - esp. since it's not something that is absurd or anything. But, if she's not ready for something ' real' then she'll move on and lose out on what could have been the best' man for her. Pray about it and then go from there. (Hope she can accept you for the beautiful person you are)

I am hooked on this series even though its older. I grew up in Ontario Canada with Mennonites and Amish around. Ive always been in love with the way they do things. Simple things make me happy. I cannot get behind everything being about God though. We all need to own our own decisions and outcomes. At markets here I buy Amish farmed goods, veg and fruit and furniture. All families would do some good to learn and continue good customes. Oh..the pimped up buggy: I've seen documentaries/series before that are like that. Its brilliantly funny to me. It must be very hard for some of them that have an artistic need because many of them arent allowed to draw/paint or craft at all. Side note: if I could date someone I could only see on weekends I might actually chose to date again(single/celebate for 7 years now by my choice)

We in the west are like animals lusting after each other. The amish live a life of self control. More and more people are going to want to go back to a more simple lifestyle. Setting aside a room for the oldest girl to entertain her friend puts value on her and helps her to stay pure.
