It doesn’t make them ignorant to be afraid of things they aren’t used to. Anyone who lived in the country where everyone dressed the same, looked the same, and acted the same, had little contact with the outside world, and have never so much as heard someone sing a non Christian song, for the first two decades of their life would be afraid of all this new stuff, no matter how intelligent they are. Secular people who simply haven’t been on an airplane before have panic attacks the first time they fly. Are they ignorant or just afraid of the unknown? Many A+ students cry and are scared when their parents drop them off at their college dorms the first time. It doesn’t mean they don’t want to be there or that they are ignorant. It just means leaving what you know is scary. And it’s that scary for teens just to live on their own and leave all their friends for the first time. These Amish kids were pretty much put in a new world! They have every right to be scared! It has NOTHING to do with intelligence. 🙄

These teens are not judgmental at all. They are comparing and analyzing the various lifestyles. They are loving and kind. One part I think they forgot originally is that David danced before God and also played the harp. But it was great that they actually researched for their answers instead of just believing what others told them or passed on to them.

@Sanningen being judgmental, especially to someone’s face and about things they care about is rude, and ignorant. Judging things, is different from being judgmental. Simple judging is more like deciding how you feel, being judgmental is usually negative, as it means looking down on what other people do (and often their entire lifestyles)

I like Leah...You can tell what she is thinking just by looking at her face...Her eyes don't lie. Though, you can also tell when she is judging someone.
@ccali327
@ccali327 3 жыл бұрын
It's a fair point. I do think she's questioning herself while judging others which is tempering the harshness of that judgment. Even when she says she "knows" certain things about the afterlife, it's hard to believe she is 100% convinced of it. I think some of it is still her trying to convince herself that she truly believes this stuff which is why you get a sort of contradictory vibe. There is a lot of introspection going on because there is so much tied to that belief. She's forced to believe in something with no real evidence, and that something dictates so much of the rest of her life. If that belief wavers, it's going to be hard to hold the rest of her identity together. So, there is a real powerful bias that's keeping her true to her roots while her intelligence and curiosity is tempering that. It's as if those hardened beliefs act as a governor to keep her true to her Amish roots, but she's pushing up against the limits of that governor.

***** Oh come on now. I'm sure there are a fewwwwww people a little less tolerant. Like people who don't want to serve gay people in their stores, racist people, people who think women shouldn't have control over their own bodies. Saying "Wehh the world's gone PC mad" is just a way of complaining about being expected not to be cruel or impolite. What rights have "leftys" taken away from you? The only thing they don't tend to tolerate is intolerance and why should intolerance be tolerated?
@jimzucco1503
@jimzucco1503 9 жыл бұрын
***** So you think if someone denies other people service for an arbitrary reason, it's wrong for someone who disagrees with them to in turn deny them service? Is it fine and dandy for someone to say "I don't want gay people in my store" but then turn around and whine that it's unfair and they're being witch hunted if some people then go "Well we don't want you in ours."? Look, you can try to justify discrimination all day, but I'm assuming that means you've never personally faced discrimination and don't know how horrible it is. Hmmm, maybe just a bit, don't you think? I mean, ISIS do behead people. It's not exactly on the same level as someone blogging angrily about bigots, is it? Nobody is being the thought police, nobody is telling you what you can and can't think, what people want, is for your hateful thoughts not to affect them unnecessarily. You see a gay couple on the street kissing and think it's distasteful? Fine. Think it, move on, don't kiss someone of your own gender, because it's not something you want to do. Just don't yell at them, attack them or do anything that affects them just because of the way you think. You don't like the idea of others doing it to you, so don't do it to them. I don't know when common courtesy stopped being a simple fucking thing that three-year-olds learned and started being something you had to explain to grown men. But whatever. Keep feeling oppressed if you want, you middle class, "silent majority", hero. Fight the good fight against those equality-for-all scum. Don't they know equality is only for people who look and act like you?

@Derek Charette Researchers at MSU's Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture exposed ecosystems consisting of insects and soybean plants to rock music, country music and sounds of a city to see if the noise affected the environment. The study found that a ecosystem exposed to AC/DC's Back in Black album on repeat for two consecutive weeks began to deteriorate. Lady beetles became less effective predators, and as a result, the aphid population surged in the ecosystem, harming the biomass of the soybean plants.

While I do not berate anyone for their religion or what they believe, what bothers me about the Amish lifestyle is how isolated they are & the utter lack of education that occurs. As an American citizen, to not know one of our country's past presidents that was brutally assassinated is wrong. History, science, mathematics & the arts should be something they are exposed to. Manual labor, isolation, limited education & ignorance is not the way to "teach" people how to live. You can live modestly while still being educated & gaining knowledge. Give them the knowledge & options to make their own decisions. While many parts of their lifestyle are admirable, living in ignorance is not. Limiting their education, living in isolation without exposure to the "real" world is their way of keeping people in the Amish communities---they wouldn't be able to survive in the "real world".

FIrst, most communities really aren't that isolated, second, they asked Becky that question, she was from a Schwartzentruber Amish community, the most conservative and don't teach history or science, other Amish communities are not like that. History, science, etc are part if their curriculum. They did that just so the Amish look stupid and uneducated. Also, they can survive in the, as you call it, "real world" but many prefer not to because the "real world" is horrible, immoral, lazy, busy, etc.
@mazzvidz
@mazzvidz Жыл бұрын
Your “REAL” world is a figment of your imagination. Mother Nature is brutal, ruthless and unapologetic. You just so happen to live on a speck of time in which technology shields you in a bubble from that reality. That bubble can be popped at any moment and you certainly would not have the knowledge, skills or work ethic to survive.

The way she talked about the beat of the drums, it was almost like a self-affirmation, like "The beats made me feel something that made me want to get up move my body and dance *but that's evil, god hates that*". I kinda feel bad for them tbh, they don't allow themselves to fully enjoythings, there's always "self-shaming" at all times. I truly believe people should do whatever they wanna do as long at they're not doing harm to others or themselves, but sis... It's just music. Man, the things they're missing...

People may not believe in their faith, but all these young Amish have something that most modern youth (whatever ethnicity) in developed countries have lost-self reliance, self-sufficiency. These young men and women have a good work ethic, they have a sense of place and purpose. The young women have domestic skills that most modern girls have lost and the same goes for the boys. Read John Gatto about the original purpose of higher education in Germany and the U.S. in the early 20th century.

+Gwenda Rye The lady with the black veil was a Schwartzentruber Amish but her family left that group. From her clothing I suspect they are in a more progressive Mennonite Church. The other young people are from an Older Amish Church that's for sure if they are "officially" on rumspringa, because New Order Amish do not allow rumspringa. Also, I do think they are from Ohio as Schwartzentruber Amish are from that States also the clothes of the others look like the one that the Amish wear there. Hope that's help.

+Venabame b Women shouldn't feel the need to be "domestic" as you say. It implies women are less than men and should stay at home which is considered sexist to the non-Amish population.

I think someone being offended by that comment is a choice. I am a homemaker and mother as my husband and I feel that it is for the best of our children that I am at home with them, as well as it benefits our family as a whole to have someone here to maintain the home. That isn't sexist. Frankly is astounds me that so many women take offence to it. It is an honour to stay home and raise my children and know that my husband fully trusts me to do a good job while he is away at work. No one is saying that is all I am good for but it is what I do to the best of my abilities and is in no way an insult. It's a matter of pride. No one could care for me home and my children the way I do. How is it offensive to be recognized for that?

I think people should relax, these people have their own beliefs and they practice them. At least their parents let them experience the outside world, and its clear that they are normal human beings. You are entitled to have your own beliefs. I personally am atheist, but i don't go around trying to force it down peoples throats. After all isn't that the main thing that makes people dislike religions in the first place?

Well, these are 19 year olds and they do come across like they are 14/ immature. its an observation... Seems you are being judgemental of amish. What more do you expect? They never heard of JFK or ppl landing on the moon. They grow up in stable families where responsibility is a given, not a choice. Too many teens behave like morons and judged as such. its not a crime to call a spade a spade. If anything, the Amish aren't sugar coating it and being honest. Those kids should make themselves useful. sitting around and getting hosed all day...one of them saying he fels like crap until he gets to drink again on the weekend...that is sad. the amish agree. whats so judgemental about fact? you don't agree?

I think that Christians are allowed to have opinions and expectations about others, but they still must treat others as their equals. In other words, they can judge, but they must look beyond a person's exterior and see that s/he is still a person and should be treated as such. I could be wrong, though, as I don't know most of the rules of Christianity despite being a Christian myself.

Do British people know that in America we go to "Amish Country" (wherever the nearest one is - ya know within reason haha like I guess the whole USA doesnt do this) on field trips when were in grade school (age 5-11). And they allow tourists to tour, etc, too (At least the east coast communities ive seen). They really are super nice though. I didn't talk to any kids my age though - however, I remember once I went to Pennsylvania to ski so we stopped by the Penn Dutch Amish - and I ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS - as we both turned on to the same road, but heading in opposite directions, he looked back over his seat in his buggy to look at the car, and I looked back over my seat in the car to get a good look at the buggy and bc of this we instead DEAD LOCKED eyes - no emotion - until his mother "smacked" (gently) him to turn back around - I guess bc he was staring at the car too long or whatever ya know? Temptation. Anyway like I said, just one of those weird childhood moments you always remember, and this is one of the few times I've gotten to share that story lol.

I feel like this show is good because it helps break away stereotypes for both groups. We see that Amish aren't as close-minded as some people think they are, that they're really quite nice and open to hearing about beliefs and lifestyles that are opposite to theirs, and we see that kids that look like "delinquents" can be really quite polite and respectful of others as well.

"My greatest concern for girls in bikinis... is really for the boys because they struggle a lot with temptation." I know we all want to be non-judgmental and friendly but that is really the basis of blaming women for rape. There is a certain danger in minimizing women's value and even men's agency to make the claim that women are somehow responsible for minimizing the temptations of a man. She has no such concern for the men with their shirts off. There is just no self-control taught at all.

I remember the bible saying that Jesus drank wine and turning water into wine. Wine as in fermented alcohol from grapes not grape juice. Should I mention he lived in a hot climate with no refrigeration, that grape juice would have spoiled really quickly. It seems less against alcohol by itself and more about having it in excess and getting drunk.
