I was shocked at the discrepancy between the onboard and manual mpg calculation. I thought it must be wrong, but it wasn’t! I designed software to keep track of mine. I do my calculations slightly differently. Example: Miles divided by litres times 4.546. There are 4.546 litres to a gallon. So 341 miles divided by 43 litres = 7.9 miles per litre. Then times that by 4.5467 = 36.05 mpg. Keep up the good work Pete.

I enjoyed that Pete. I didn't spec 4 wheel steer on my Q7 and haven't regretted it, you soon get used to the size of these big Audis and they're no problem what with the lightness of the controls and all the warning bleepers and chimes. Reversing a trailer is magic with the Audi assist mode, maybe you could feature that sometime if you haven't already. Cheers.

Great review. Not overly surprised by the discrepency between real and Audi calculated mpg, they assume we'll never check 🙄
@numbereightyseven4 жыл бұрын
Urgh, it's not a discrepancy. It's the minority of time spent accelerating, whe mpg can / will be something like 3 - 10 mpg, that counters the majority of time spent at the mid-30's.
@peter.russell4 жыл бұрын
@@numbereightyseven I think you misunderstand the issue. Audi average mpg seem to overstate the figure e.g. Trip computer states the car is doing 32mpg when it is actually doing 28mpg. This is checked by filling the tank & noting the mileage. Next time you fill the tank, note miles travelled and the fuel used to calc mpg or km/l or if you prefer l/100km. Over time you will get a pretty good idea of what economy you can achieve. The longer you do this, the more accurate the figure will be because it will allow for things like temperature (which affects fuel density), and how accurately you "fill" the tank. Car manufacterers are not know for their honesty, try it :-)
@numbereightyseven4 жыл бұрын
@@peter.russell Car manufacturers' claims might be inaccurate, but a car's computer calculation is almost never wrong. That's an urban myth. PP calculated an actual mpg (miles on speedo, volume of liquid into tank) of 25.16mpg. He then said he'd not noticed the gauge "not going below 30 that much." There is no discrepancy here. The issue in your reply is with "you will get a pretty good idea of what economy you can achieve". No, people generally underestimate the effect of thirsty brief periods of acceleration. Eg. If you drive 26 miles: 90% of it at 32mpg, and just 10% of it at 10mpg, you get 26mpg, ie using 1 gallon. (not of rounding in there). 10mpg under normal acceleration is probably conservative. PP noticed the 90%of time at 32mpg.
@peter.russell4 жыл бұрын
@@numbereightyseven we are going to have to agree to disagree. The figures I have demonstrate the trip average mpg is not correct, you an try to persuade me otherwise but I know my calculations are correct.

Nice review. I do like the SQs - couldn’t match Mrs PP in the clubman though. You may have covered it before but I’d be interested in hearing about arrangements with dealers/press cars - fuel, mileage, insurance, dos/don’ts, restrictions imposed etc - do they vary, who are the strictest/least restrictive?
@PetrolPed4 жыл бұрын
Manufacturers press cars are all pretty much the same. You get the car for a week, they insure it, no mileage limit, Delivered with full tank and collect with at least half a tank. Some will give fuel cars for certain trips, Europe travel must by pre authorised. Not track use unless specific permission given. Some brands are overnight loan only with collection. Dealers are normally anything from hours to a couple of days. They sort the insurance 👍

Looked like a nice motor. Don't quite understand the focus on mpg - to be honest, if you are buying an SQ/ RS / M car you are buying it for noise and performance and understand that there is going to be a price to pay for that. If you want to ring out maximum mpg all the time then you are going down the standard TDI route. What was quite interesting was the disparity of what the car was telling you and what you actually got though. Not going to bother with a similar exercise on the RS3 though - what the car is telling me is bad enough!
