So to answer why the Xantia has the handbrake on the front wheels, it’s because the brakes work off the same hydraulic system as the suspension, and if the suspension has a sudden catastrophic issue, you then also lose your brakes (and eventually your clutch too) so the handbrake is on the front wheels as a fail safe if the brakes go as they deemed it safer to stop the car using the front wheels than the rear in an emergency
