Reflections of Life

3 жыл бұрын

Do you feel like life is a constant game of catch-up? No matter how much you strive to get and do, you feel like you need to do more or have more?
We’re encouraged to seek out success, wealth, and material possessions, against which we measure our status, self-worth and happiness. We continually strive to achieve these things, but when we get them, we feel only a fleeting sense of happiness before setting our sights on the next thing. And this pursuit of 'stuff' often comes at the sacrifice of our physical, mental, and emotional health.
There’s no denying that money is an important part of our society and having a degree of financial stability increases our ability to enjoy life. But the reality is that most of us live in a world of overabundance. We need to realise that we have enough. We need to stop linking our self-worth and happiness to doing and having more. That’s a journey worth taking.
All of our films are made possible through the generous support of our patrons.

I lived for 33 years with my husband who chased the consumer dream for himself. Boats, yacht club, working all hours.Paying one credit card with another one. I on the other hand never wanted that lifestyle. i was content with my books, my friends and my dog. One day he came and said that I was not the kind of woman he wanted. He wanted someone like himself. He divorced me and married a woman who is like him. I do not know if he is happy, but I hope so. I moved from a custom home to a former crack den in a rough part of town. It was truly an awful place, run down and very dirty. My friends and I cleaned and painted it. We had parties on Sunday afternoons filled with good food and laughter. I was the happiest I had ever been in my life. All of my worldly possessions fit into the back of a mini van. I buy as little as possible and I know the real value lies in being kind, loving and helpful. I try to live lightly on the Earth, to me She is sacred. Blessed Be.

I live on a corner lot in a small rural town. I’m married to my childhood sweetheart who I’m still madly in love with.....I have four dogs that love me, a son who calls everyday just to chat....I garden because it’s the dream of my life to garden....our house is small and we don’t owe anything on it.....I am living the life of my childhood dreams....I am truly blessed and I know it. Everyday has simple, glorious, gifts and I am grateful for them all.

I’m at the end of my life, with heart and kidney failure, and my illness started 3 1/2 years ago. When I realized I wasn’t going to live to long, I started to go through a lot of changes about how I see life. I spent so many years trying to collect stuff and make more money, now I see that what I was doing was taking me away from the real joy in life. I thought I was doing what I was suppose to do, that’s what I learned as an American. Now, the joy is in every small thing, my son, nature, the relief of loosing the feeling I need more, instead, I enjoy and feel greateful for what I have. I can’t look back now and think about what I didn’t do, that doesn’t help, but now I’m living more in the time I have left, then all the years I was chasing the dollar and stuff. I believe the disease of wanting more in America is what is killing it’s soul. I live in Egypt now, around a lot of poverty, and these people have taught me how to be greateful for every small thing I have, and still be happy. At first living around poverty put me in shock, and I use to think these people have nothing, yet they are always smiling, what’s wrong with them. Now I learned their secret, I went so far to learn this, and now there are not many people I connect with from my own country, they think I’m crazy, LOL

When we have freedom then we want stability and security. When we have security we want to be entertained. When we’re entertained then we want fame and status and power. When we have status and power, then we want to be loved and find purpose and meaning. When we have love and a purpose then we have responsibilities, and when we have responsibilities we have obligations and commitments and then we are not free, so we dream of freedom. All is vanity. We are given the entire infinite, eternal and harmonious universe and we cut it apart into a million little Hells in which to suffer the illusion of the will and the “I” it conceives out of wedlock for the sake of being martyred and resurrected again.

3 years later, I can say the simple life is for me! Before I divorced, my ex's family was very materialistic. They would make fun of me for not having a $3K purse or a new car (My Jeep is 12 years old.) My home was too small and my clothes are all second hand. I left all of that, gave away most of it. I drove away with what could fit in my Jeep, and that included 4 cats, a dog and a box of memories. Just gave the rest away and went and chased my passions in life. My divorce left me financially and spiritually broken but I am slowly smiling again. I am middle age and not afraid. Funny thing is, I make more money now than I ever did and I care share it with animal rescues, I make big family style meals for the people who I love and love me, unconditionally, and I can take trips to quiet places and take photographs. I just took a ceramics class, first time in 35 years and it brought me back to being a kid and playing in the mud. I need a good cup of coffee too, so I can slowly sip and mull over my day and smile. Someone recently gifted me some linen material. It has the most beautiful feel to it. I dyed it with some turmeric and now I have some sunny curtains, swaying in my kitchen. I owe no one. I rent a place and I have few bills. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

It is so true, that money has become integral to our modern day lives - to provide a roof over our heads, education for the children, health care. The question to ask is... how much is enough? This connects me right back to my deceased parents, uncles, aunts, grand parents, all of whom grew up with very little money. I have such happy memories of the warmth, kindness, laughter and great values shared by those people who lived through WW2. My father taught at Universities in Eastern and Central Africa for years. Fondest memories of those times, we knew the riches of contentment without feeling any pressure to acquire and display trappings of wealth. I tried to fit in with London life for years, but I struggled with the insincerity and greed of it all. No longer in London but still see through the pathetic attempts to control the masses. Snacks, biscuit and alcohol aisles in supermarkets, for a start. Anti-depressant medications from the GP given out like sweets. The best thing we can do is try to pass to our children on a sense of what really matters. And relay stories about the grandparents.

I have no car or a washing machine or hot running water or central heating, my trusty wood stove does all the cooking, heating water for washes and heating my small very old stone house...I grow food, keep chickens, forage and barter with some small organic farms here..I will never go back to my old life, never. Young one, you're the same age as my nephew is now. I hope you're still around on KZbin. I hope you have found peace. I'm 38. Please be wise with the way you spend your money. Do not waste it on brands or new tech that will be replaced by new brands and new tech. Don't waste it on a new car or truck, get something reliable from 5-10 years ago. Save for land, even if it's only an acre on the edge of a big city you love. Build a home on it for cash, even if it's a tiny home or manufactured home. Develop your independence and self-reliance outside of what social media and society throws at you. Learn to grow your garden, even if it's only a few plants. Learn to fix things, even if you fail the first time, the internet provides a wealth of free knowledge. Ignore your peers, have mercy and pity on them because they allowed themselves to be caught up in consumption. This is the advice I would have given myself at 23.

A no doubt familiar story for all of us! Work, work, work! I have worked regularly 80+ hours a week for most of my life. I am now 58 year of age, I am a teacher! It is the best job in the world and also the worst! Keeping the mind 'tame' is the key to a happy life, knowing when to accept the 'downs' without becoming down and accepting the highs without becoming 'euphoric!' What is enough? Depends on your time of life! Judgement is prejudice in disguise. When you can accept and love yourself you will accept and love all!

I was trapped in that gilded cage, with people saying "you have such a beautiful house! Why don't you have people over more often?" Well, I couldn't entertain with a cave troll raging in the basement. Moved into tiny bedroom in the home of the only people brave enough to offer me help. Spent hours cleaning, painting and dealing with the troll, sold the house, got divorced, bought an RV, moved into it with the cat who had adopted me, traveled, and parked by my family. So much happier!

All I need is "peace" of mind. I live in Las Vegas and I drive for a rideshare company and have delivered passengers to mulit-million dollar mansions and the worst parts of town. People unfortunately with a lot of money are just as stressed out than those who have 5 people living in a 1 bedroom apartment.....SAD!!! WE as a society have lost the true meaning of what is important and I would rather sleep better knowing that I have valued far more people by listening to them as true individuals than being dishonest and driving a $200k car to impress total strangers that only find value in what I own rather than how they look at me as a genuine individual!!! My brother has a BIG house, takes vacations and buys things only to post what he has on Facebook. He is miserable!!

My brother drives for a rideshare company and used to do it like him for a year until left it for my current employment, financially I’m kinda more stable but the level of misery and stress I’m managing everyday day can’t be compared to those beautiful days when I turned my car and could come back home when I wanted , felt so free, content , started playing the guitar ,and not only that : So many souls I got the opportunity to meet, connect , and give and receive testimony , two minor accidents and lots of expenses in car pieces but can tell for sure Best time of my life in US no doubts about it !!!

I agree with everything here. But I caution one thing: without financial savings, once you retire and your body ages, your health can take sudden, unplanned turns. So please, when you are young, set aside the money you save by choosing not to go to the coffee shops every day or whatever is your temporal pleasure, and bank this savings. My husband quit smoking and our reward was: what we saved paid for our vacations. We have had wonderful vacations that we are becoming less able to do. We both had meaningful jobs or were self-employed, no debt for many years and have a good retirement fund. It is all about "balance" with simple pleasures. The biggest hope this video brings is that it is never too late to start.

Thank you for sharing all your thoughts, experiences and ideas, we appreciate it. Glad you saw value in what was shared. We definitely need money in our modern day lives - to provide a roof over our heads, food on the table, medical care, etc. But the question is, how much is enough? So many people chasing more more more, in excess - when really, they already have what they need to be truly comfortable and content. It's about finding the balance, as you said as well. Sending you warm hugs. Justine and Michael. 💚

I've been saying and thinking so much lately about how I live in a guilded cage. It's so true. No major hardships, no real discomfort, consumerism...Amazon deliveries every day when I want the next book or beauty product. But at what cost? I have and spend much less than most in American society, and still, I've fallen into the same trap. My happiest time was being in grad school with a partner and baby, and we had no money at all, and just found pleasure in one another.

The happiest time for my family was when we had very little. I completely respect my father and understand why he chose to move us to another place, but I think all of us paid a terrible price. We had material security. However, we were outcasts in our new home. School was an absolute hell for me and my sister. My parents didn't know how to help us. Worst of all, I lost my father. He was working out of town for days, even weeks, at a time. As a child, I didn't realize the effect that would have on me. As an adult, I've had to find that little boy I once was and nurture him. My whole world was turned upside down for money. It wasn't worth it. My whole family suffered in ways that I can't even describe. No amount of money can fix that now.

I completely understand. I’m tired of my life but I can’t live the life I wanted because I started this and my family wanted this more than I wanted it before. I figured it out but I couldn’t go back and start over again. Some voice in my head would want to take my life but I keep pushing forward and live. Keep reminding myself to bend to the truth. Live life as it is. I’m pressured to figure out what I enjoy, what I like to do, what I do best. Maybe I could figure it out or maybe not.

You can. It is a journey, but you are starting on that path younger than many. Good! And a little hint from someone twice your age -- there is no number one to achieve. It's an illusion. We spend our lives chasing what cannot be caught. When we stop doing that, stop the madness and pressure, we have a chance to discover, and enjoy, reality. We just sold our "dream" house. We worked many years and did without to achieve a dream that turned into a nightmare. I nearly died in the process of trying to save that dream? For what? Now I live in a place half the size, in need of much updating, but with so much peace and a sense of shelter I had never felt -- and I am much much happier, although I am still looking for more to let go. Moving house shows you that stuff is more burden than blessing! Lol Wishing you all the best. Welcome aboard!

I am happy as long as I have a roof over my head and food to eat, I would love to have a some house with a yard to grow a vegetable garden and some flowers but is was not meant to be. I was taught since I was young to not buy clothing cause it was “ in fashion “ etc. My family were content, enjoyed the outdoors, worked for what we have. There are always people who don’t have enough and those that have too much, take each day as it comes with expectation that doesn’t give you a lot of stress. Be happy for yourself!

I've been drawing houseplans since i was 8 years old. At 16 i drew a plan of my dream home. At 63 i found that house ,about 80 percent of what i drew at 16. But the last 20 percent is even better than what i envisioned at 16. It's a large older house which i have filled with lovely old recycled furniture ,books and objects that i simply ADORE. Giving up everything is not always the solution. But living your dream is and at 70 years old i certainly am. Thank you God . I wish to add that i am in total agreement on living the simple life. I actually do even though my house is large. I rarely have any desire to leave my home. I grow my own veggies and waste absolutely nothing and wouldn't dream of not eating home cooked food. Waste and anything designer absolutely duscusts me. I have never followed fads or fashions and yet as a teenager i was considered a very well dressed girl. So i do agree with everything said here. But i do love my home and I'll add that i love it so much that i talk to it.😂So people just do what makes you happy.
